Intermolecular forces are the attractive forces between molecules. They determine physical properties such as boiling points, melting points, solubility, viscosity, and surface tension. Understanding these forces is essential for A-Level Chemistry, as they explain trends in homologous series and the behaviour of substances.

1. Types of Intermolecular Forces | 分子间作用力的类型

There are three main types of intermolecular forces: London (dispersion) forces, permanent dipole-dipole forces, and hydrogen bonding. All molecules experience London forces, while polar molecules also have dipole-dipole interactions, and molecules with H bonded to N, O, or F can form hydrogen bonds.

分子间作用力主要有三种类型:伦敦(色散)力、永久偶极-偶极力以及氢键。所有分子都存在伦敦力,而极性分子还有偶极-偶极相互作用,与 N、O 或 F 键合的 H 可以形成氢键。

These forces are much weaker than covalent, ionic, or metallic bonds. An important distinction: intermolecular forces act between molecules, whereas intramolecular forces (chemical bonds) hold atoms together within a molecule.

这些力比共价键、离子键或金属键弱得多。一个重要的区别是:分子间作用力作用于分子之间,而分子内力(化学键)将分子内的原子结合在一起。

2. London (Dispersion) Forces | 伦敦(色散)力

London forces arise from temporary fluctuations in electron density that create instantaneous dipoles. These instantaneous dipoles can induce dipoles in neighbouring molecules, resulting in an attractive force. They are present in all molecules and atoms, even noble gases.
