📚 A-Level OCR Business: Common Mistakes & Solutions | A-Level OCR

Many OCR A-Level Business students lose marks not because they do not know the content, but because they fall into predictable traps in calculations, interpretation, and essay evaluation. This article highlights the most common errors seen in past papers and class assessments, and shows you exactly how to avoid them. Each mistake is paired with a clear correction so you can turn a weak spot into a strength.

1. Demand, Supply and Equilibrium Confusions |

A very basic yet persistent error is confusing a movement along a curve with a shift of the whole curve. When the price of the good itself changes, we see a change in quantity demanded or supplied — a movement along the existing line. A shift happens only when a non-price factor such as income, advertising, or costs of production changes.

Example mistake: ‘A rise in the price of coffee shifts the demand curve to the left.’ Correct: It causes a contraction of quantity demanded, shown by a movement up the demand curve, not a shift.

Also, many students confuse the effects of indirect taxes and subsidies on the supply curve. An indirect tax shifts the supply curve leftwards (decrease in supply), while a subsidy shifts it rightwards. Remember, it is the supply curve that moves, not the demand curve.

2. Price Elasticity of Demand Calculation Pitfalls |

Price elasticity of demand (PED) is one of the most frequently tested quantitative skills. A classic error is using the wrong base for percentage change. OCR typically expects you to use the original value as the denominator unless the question specifies the midpoint method. Always check the question wording.

Correct formula:

PED = (% change in quantity demanded) ÷ (% change in price)

PED = (需求量变动百分比) ÷ (价格变动百分比)

Example data: price rises from £20 to £25, quantity demanded falls from 800 to 600 units. Using the original values, %ΔQd = (−200/800)×100 = −25%, and %ΔP = (5/20)×100 = 25%. So PED = −25/25 = −1.0 (unitary elastic). Many candidates mistakenly divide by the new value or forget the minus sign altogether, treating elasticity as positive.

Also, when interpreting PED for revenue decisions, remember: if demand is price inelastic (|PED| < 1), a price rise increases total revenue. If demand is price elastic (|PED| > 1), a price cut increases total revenue. Do not mix these up in a ‘calculate and explain’ question.

3. Break-Even Analysis: Beyond Just Finding the Point |

A common error is reading the break-even chart incorrectly. The break-even output is where total revenue equals total costs, not where the fixed cost line meets variable cost. Practice identifying the exact intersection on a supplied diagram.

Another trap is confusing margin of safety with profit. Margin of safety = actual sales − break‐even sales. It shows how far sales can fall before making a loss. Profit only starts above break-even. Simply stating a big margin of safety without interpreting its implication for risk reduces marks.

Calculation pitfall: when using the contribution formula, break‐even output = total fixed costs ÷ contribution per unit. Students often divide by selling price instead of contribution (selling price minus variable cost per unit). Always double-check the formula.

4. Working Capital and Liquidity Misunderstandings |

Liquidity ratios like the current ratio (current assets / current liabilities) are simple to compute, but interpretation is often superficial. A high current ratio might look safe, but it can actually indicate poor management of stock or too much cash sitting idle. Equally, a ratio just above 1.5:1 may be fine for a supermarket with fast inventory turnover but dangerous for a manufacturer holding slow-moving stock.

Mistake: saying ‘the current ratio improved from 1.8 to 2.2, therefore the business is doing better’ without considering what caused the change. Perhaps debtors are taking longer to pay, bloating current assets. Always link ratios to working capital management and cash flow.

Also, do not ignore acid test ratio. It excludes inventories and gives a tighter picture of immediate liquidity. Examiners reward candidates who use both and explain the difference.

5. Decision Tree Evaluation Errors |

Decision trees test your ability to calculate expected monetary values (EMV) and to justify a choice. Many candidates calculate EMV correctly but then fail to prune the tree — they recommend an option without crossing out less favourable alternatives. Always show pruning: a neat cross on rejected branches.

Calculation error: multiplying an outcome by the wrong probability, or forgetting to add the probabilities of chance nodes to ensure they sum to 1. EMV = (probability A × outcome A) + (probability B × outcome B). Use decimal probabilities, not percentages, in your working.

EMV = (概率 A × 结果 A) + (概率 B × 结果 B)。

Evaluation: simply picking the highest EMV is not enough for top marks. Discuss risk attitude, qualitative factors (e.g. brand reputation), and long-term strategy. For instance, a lower EMV path might be chosen because it is less risky and aligns with a cautious business objective.

6. Boston Matrix: Product Portfolio Misclassification |

The Boston Matrix sorts products by market share and market growth, but students often misread the axes. Relative market share is on the x-axis (high to low, not low to high). High market growth is on the y-axis. A ‘question mark’ has low share in a high-growth market, while a ‘dog’ has low share in a low-growth market. Reverse these and everything falls apart.

Common mistake: calling a product a ‘star’ because it has high market growth, ignoring that it must also have high relative market share. A product with high growth but low share is a question mark, needing investment to build share. Always check both dimensions.

In essay questions, do not just describe the matrix; use it to evaluate the portfolio. Identify whether the business has a balanced set of products, where cash cows fund stars and question marks. A portfolio heavy in dogs suggests decline, while too many question marks create cash strain.

7. Financial Ratio Interpretation: ROCE, Gearing and Efficiency |

Return on Capital Employed (ROCE) is often misinterpreted. A rising ROCE is generally positive, but it may be due to falling capital employed (e.g. asset stripping) rather than genuine profit improvement. Always look behind the number.

Gearing ratio (long-term debt / capital employed) shows financial risk. Many think low gearing is always good; however, very low gearing might suggest a company is not taking advantage of cheap borrowing to grow. Context matters: during low interest rates, moderate gearing can boost shareholder returns.

Efficiency ratios such as asset turnover and inventory turnover link income statements to balance sheets. A decline in inventory turnover could signal obsolete stock or poor demand forecasting. Never just state the ratio; explain the operational implication.

8. Marketing Strategy: Linking Price Elasticity and the Mix |

When discussing pricing strategies like price skimming or penetration pricing, students often forget to tie them to PED. Price skimming (high initial price) is viable when demand is price inelastic early on because early adopters are less price-sensitive. Penetration pricing (low initial price) works when demand is price elastic and quick market share capture matters.

Mistake: choosing a pricing strategy without mentioning the other elements of the marketing mix. A high price skim may fail if distribution is weak or promotion does not build a premium image. Exam answers need integrated thinking: price, product, place, promotion, people, process, physical evidence.

Also, avoid generic statements like ‘advertising increases demand’. Instead, specify the type of advertising (informative vs persuasive) and show how it shifts the demand curve or changes PED. Precision scores highly.

9. Human Resource Management: Labour Productivity vs. Labour Turnover |

Labour productivity is output per worker (or per hour), while labour turnover measures the rate at which staff leave and need replacing. A common mistake is assuming that high productivity automatically means a motivated workforce. It could result from longer hours, pressure, or deskilling, which eventually raises turnover.

Calculation alert: labour turnover (%) = (number of staff leaving in a period / average number of staff) × 100. Use the correct average. Examiners often set traps where you must calculate average staff from opening and closing balances.

Higher labour turnover increases recruitment and training costs, harms quality and customer service. When evaluating, link HR metrics to financial performance. E.g., a fall in productivity caused by high turnover may squeeze profit margins, forcing a business to revise its motivation strategy.

10. Essay Writing: From ‘It Depends’ to Developed Evaluation |

The most common weakness in longer OCR essays is shallow evaluation. Simply writing ‘it depends on the business’ or ‘the external environment matters’ will not lift you above Level 3. Evaluative comments must be specific, justified, and linked to the context in the case study.

Good evaluation uses phrases like: ‘This strategy is likely to be more effective if the economy is in a boom, because…’ or ‘The success depends heavily on the accuracy of the market research, since…’. Always give a reason for the dependency, and weigh up short-term vs long-term trade-offs.

Structure: build a clear argument, then challenge it. E.g., raising price may boost short-term revenue given inelastic demand, but long-term rivals may enter, eroding market share. A two-sided conclusion that justifies a final recommendation is the gold standard.

Finally, integrate the seven functions and external environment where relevant. An essay on marketing that ignores finance or HR is incomplete. Show how decisions in one area impact others to reach top-band marks.
