📚 A-Level OCR Business: Essay Writing Template | A-Level OCR 商务:Essay写作模板

Mastering the essay section is crucial for achieving top grades in OCR A Level Business. This template provides a structured approach to plan, write and evaluate essays, ensuring you meet all the assessment objectives with confidence.

1. Understanding OCR Business Essay Requirements | 理解OCR商务Essay要求

In OCR A Level Business, essay questions appear in all three examined components and typically carry 20–25 marks. These questions demand far more than descriptive answers; you must analyse, apply and evaluate.

Each essay is based on a short case study or stimulus. Ignoring the context severely limits your marks, as AO2 application is specifically rewarded.

The command words such as ‘evaluate’, ‘discuss’ or ‘assess’ signal that you must present balanced arguments and reach a supported judgement. Simply listing advantages and disadvantages is not enough.

2. The Assessment Objectives (AO1–AO4) | 评分目标 (AO1–AO4)

Understanding how marks are allocated helps you write strategically. OCR uses four assessment objectives, all tested within a single essay.

AO1 Knowledge and understanding
AO2 Application to business contexts
AO3 Analysis of issues and chains of reasoning
AO4 Evaluation, judgement and synthesis

AO3 and AO4 carry the greatest weight, so your paragraphs must consistently show logical reasoning and critical evaluation rather than just recalling theory.

You earn AO2 by weaving in data from the stimulus, such as employee turnover figures, market share percentages, or specific costs. Every paragraph should touch the case.

3. Deconstructing the Command Words |

Different command words require slightly different approaches, although all demand evaluation. Recognising the nuance shapes your argument balance.

For ‘Evaluate’, you must weigh up the extent of something, usually coming to a conclusion about whether a strategy is effective or the most important factor.

For ‘Discuss’, you explore both sides of an issue in detail. The conclusion may state which side is stronger, but you can also leave the answer more open if you provide a justified view.

For ‘Assess’, you measure the value or importance of something. It often suits models like SWOT, where you judge the significance of a strength relative to a threat.

For ‘To what extent’, you are explicitly asked to state how far you agree with a statement. A strong conclusion with a clear extent (e.g. ‘largely, but not entirely’) is essential.

4. The Generic Essay Structure | 通用Essay结构

Every high-scoring OCR Business essay follows a clear, logical shape. This template ensures you avoid rambling and demonstrate progression.

Introduction: Define key terms from the question, rephrase it in your own words, and outline the two or three main points you will explore.

Body – Point 1 (For/Strength): A developed paragraph using PEEL (Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link) that analyses a reason supporting the statement or evaluating a positive aspect.

Body – Point 2 (Against/Weakness): A contrasting paragraph that considers limitations, drawbacks, or conditions where the argument does not hold.

Body – Point 3 (Evaluation/depth): A third paragraph that can explore stakeholder conflicts, long-term versus short-term effects, or a further analytical dimension before concluding.

Conclusion: A decisive judgement that directly answers the question, weighing up previous points and never introducing new theory.

5. Writing a Powerful Introduction |

Introductions must be concise – three to four sentences are enough. They set the tone and show the examiner you understand the question.

Start with a definition of the key business term. If the question is about ‘motivation’, you might write: ‘Motivation refers to the internal and external factors that stimulate the desire and energy in employees to be committed to their job.’

Then reformulate the question: ‘This essay will evaluate the extent to which financial rewards are the most effective method of motivating workers in a rapidly growing technology firm.’

Briefly signpost your structure: ‘It will consider the benefits of piece rates and bonuses, contrast with non-financial motivators such as job enrichment, and finally judge which approach suits the specific context.’

Never write a lengthy history or background of the business topic. The examiner wants evidence of a sharp, focused start.

6. Body Paragraphs: The PEEL Framework | 主体段落:PEEL框架

PEEL (Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link) is the backbone of analytical paragraphs. It prevents description and forces you to build chains of reasoning.

PEEL(观点、证据、解释、连接)是分析段落的主干。

Point: State the analytical point clearly. E.g. ‘One significant benefit of adopting a democratic leadership style is increased employee motivation through greater involvement in decision-making.’

Evidence: Pull directly from the case study. ‘In the case, Company X’s staff survey showed only 55% feel valued, suggesting current autocratic methods are failing.’

Explanation: This is the analysis. Develop the ‘so what’ using connective phrases: ‘This implies that a switch to a more participative approach could lower labour turnover because employees who feel heard and respected are more likely to stay with the firm.’

Link (and mini-evaluation): Tie back to the question and add a critical comment. ‘Therefore, leadership style directly affects labour retention, but this depends on whether the workforce has the skills and willingness to contribute.’

Using PEEL repeatedly ensures each paragraph earns AO2 and AO3 marks. Always end with a hint of evaluation to set up AO4.

7. Embedding Business Models and Concepts |

Examiners expect named theories to support your argument, but they must be applied, not just listed. Focus on two or three models per essay maximum.

Common models include: SWOT analysis, PESTLE, Porter’s Five Forces, Ansoff Matrix, the Boston Matrix, Maslow’s hierarchy, Herzberg’s two-factor theory, Blake Mouton grid, and Tannenbaum-Schmidt continuum.

When using SWOT, avoid presenting a table in continuous prose. Integrate it: ‘The case reveals a key strength – the firm’s highly skilled R&D team – which could be leveraged to exploit the opportunity in the growing Asian market, but this is threatened by increasing competition from low-cost rivals.’

For ratios, always state the formula and calculate. For example:

Gross Profit Margin = (Gross Profit ÷ Sales Revenue) × 100%

After calculation, interpret the result: ‘A 35% gross margin is healthy, indicating the firm has sufficient funds to cover operating expenses, yet it is slightly below the industry average of 40%, suggesting pricing or cost control issues.’

This applied use of models turns AO1 knowledge into AO2 and AO3 marks seamlessly.

8. Building Chains of Analysis |

Analysis is not stating a single effect; it is a logical chain of ‘this leads to… which results in… thereby…’ The deeper the chain, the higher the marks.

Weak analysis: ‘Lower prices increase sales.’ Strong analysis: ‘Reducing the price by 10% is likely to boost sales volume by 15% given the price-elastic demand in this youth market, which raises total revenue despite the lower margin per unit.’

Continue the chain: ‘This higher revenue spreads fixed costs more thinly, reducing unit costs and potentially improving the firm’s net profit margin, provided the competitors do not initiate a price war.’

Use connectives: consequently, therefore, as a result, which leads to, the impact of this is, in turn, however, on the other hand. These signpost your reasoning to the examiner.

Always end a chain with a ‘relevance statement’ that links to the case and hints at evaluation: ‘For a luxury brand like the one in the case, heavy discounting might erode brand exclusivity in the long run, so sustaining premium pricing could be more profitable.’

9. Evaluation: The Heart of High Marks |

Evaluation (AO4) is what separates A* candidates from the rest. It means making judgements about significance, as well as considering limitations and alternative viewpoints.

Effective evaluative phrases include: ‘However, it depends on…’, ‘In the short term this is effective, but in the long term…’, ‘This is the most significant factor provided that…’, ‘Stakeholders will be affected differently because…’

Evaluation should not be left only to the final paragraph. Weave it throughout the essay – at the end of each body paragraph, add a critical comment that questions the strength of your own point.

Consider the following dimensions: magnitude (how big is the effect?), time scale (short vs long term), stakeholder conflicts, dependency on external factors, and whether the argument applies only under certain circumstances.

For example: ‘While a tall organisational structure offers clear lines of authority, it is less effective in a dynamic tech start-up where rapid decisions and innovation are vital. Therefore, the suitability depends entirely on business culture.’

10. Crafting a Judicious Conclusion |

A conclusion must directly answer the question. It should synthesise the essay, not repeat points verbatim, and provide a clear, final evaluative judgement.

Start with ‘In conclusion, to a large extent…’ or ‘Overall, the most significant factor is…’, then justify why. Acknowledge alternative interpretations to show balance.

Example: ‘In conclusion, while flexible working practices significantly boost morale and reduce absenteeism, they are not a universal solution. For the manufacturing SME in this case, rigid shift patterns remain essential to meet daily production targets, so the extent of benefit is limited.’

Never introduce a completely new theory or example in the conclusion. It frustrates examiners and wastes the opportunity for synthesis.

11. Time Management and Practice |

In the exam, you should allocate roughly 30 minutes to a 20-mark essay and 40 minutes to a 25-mark question, including reading the case. A clear plan is essential.

Spend the first 5 minutes annot
