1. Price Elasticity of Demand (PED) |

Price elasticity of demand measures the responsiveness of quantity demanded to a change in price. The basic formula is PED = (% change in quantity demanded) ÷ (% change in price). Always use the midpoint method when moving between two points to avoid inconsistent results: %ΔQd = (Q₂ − Q₁) ÷ [(Q₁ + Q₂)/2] × 100, and similarly for price. A PED greater than 1 (in absolute value) indicates elastic demand; less than 1, inelastic demand; exactly 1, unit elastic. Remember that PED is typically negative due to the law of demand, but we often refer to the absolute value.

2. Income Elasticity of Demand (YED) |

Income elasticity of demand captures how quantity demanded responds to a change in consumers’ income. YED = (% change in quantity demanded) ÷ (% change in income). Normal goods have a positive YED; luxury goods have YED > 1, while necessities have 0 < YED < 1. Inferior goods show a negative YED, meaning demand falls as income rises. Use the same midpoint percentage change method. This concept helps businesses forecast how sales will shift during economic expansions or contractions.

3. Cross Elasticity of Demand (XED) |

Cross elasticity of demand measures the responsiveness of demand for one good (A) to a change in the price of another good (B). XED = (% change in quantity demanded of A) ÷ (% change in price of B). A positive XED indicates substitute goods (e.g., tea and coffee); a negative XED suggests complementary goods (e.g., printers and ink cartridges). A value close to zero implies the goods are unrelated. XED is crucial for firms when assessing the impact of competitors’ pricing strategies.

4. Price Elasticity of Supply (PES) |

Price elasticity of supply quantifies how much quantity supplied changes in response to a price change. PES = (% change in quantity supplied) ÷ (% change in price). Supply is typically elastic when firms can easily adjust production (spare capacity, stored inventories) and inelastic when factors are fixed in the short run. A PES > 1 is elastic, PES < 1 is inelastic. Unlike PED, PES is usually positive because higher prices create an incentive to produce more.

5. Costs of Production: TC, FC, VC, AC, AVC, MC |

Mastering cost calculations is fundamental. Total cost (TC) = Total fixed cost (TFC) + Total variable cost (TVC). Average total cost (ATC) = TC ÷ Q, where Q is output. Average variable cost (AVC) = TVC ÷ Q. Marginal cost (MC) = ΔTC ÷ ΔQ, representing the cost of producing one additional unit. Fixed costs do not vary with output in the short run. In a table or graph, MC often intersects ATC and AVC at their minimum points. Understanding these relationships helps explain a firm’s supply decisions.

6. Revenue and Profit Maximisation |

Total revenue (TR) = Price × Quantity. Average revenue (AR) = TR ÷ Q = Price. Marginal revenue (MR) = ΔTR ÷ ΔQ. Profit = TR − TC. Firms maximise profit where MR = MC, provided that price exceeds average variable cost in the short run. A common exam task is to complete a revenue and cost table, then identify the profit-maximising output level. If data is discrete, choose the output where MR ≥ MC but the next unit would make MC > MR.

7. Market Equilibrium with Linear Equations |

You may be given linear demand and supply functions: Qd = a − bP, Qs = c + dP. To find equilibrium, set Qd = Qs and solve for P, then substitute back to find Q. For example, if Qd = 100 − 2P and Qs = 20 + 3P, then 100 − 2P = 20 + 3P → 5P = 80 → P = 16, Q = 68. After a tax or subsidy, adjust the supply function: for a per-unit tax t, new supply becomes Qs = c + d(P − t) if the tax is on producers. Practise rearranging carefully.

8. Tax Wedges, Consumer and Producer Surplus |

An indirect tax creates a wedge between the price consumers pay (Pc) and the price producers receive (Pp): Pc = Pp + tax per unit. Consumer surplus is the area under the demand curve and above the market price; producer surplus is the area above the supply curve and below the market price. With a linear model, you calculate surpluses as areas of triangles: ½ × base × height. After a tax, both surpluses shrink, and a deadweight loss triangle appears. Be ready to calculate tax revenue per unit × quantity sold.

9. The Multiplier and National Income |

The multiplier effect shows how an initial change in autonomous spending leads to a larger final change in real GDP. The simple formula is k = 1 ÷ (1 − MPC), where MPC is the marginal propensity to consume. Alternatively, k = 1 ÷ (MPS + MPT + MPM), where MPS is the marginal propensity to save, MPT the marginal propensity to tax, and MPM the marginal propensity to import. The total change in GDP = initial injection × multiplier. For the tax multiplier, the formula is −MPC ÷ (1 − MPC). Practice distinguishing between government spending and tax multipliers, as the latter is smaller in absolute value.

10. Index Numbers, Inflation, and Unemployment |

Index numbers simplify comparisons over time. A price index for year t = (value of basket in year t ÷ value of basket in base year) × 100. The inflation rate is the percentage change in the index between two periods. For weighted indices, multiply each item’s price relative by its weight. The unemployment rate = (number of unemployed ÷ labour force) × 100. The labour force participation rate = (labour force ÷ working-age population) × 100. Real GDP adjusts nominal GDP for inflation: Real GDP = (Nominal GDP ÷ GDP deflator) × 100. Consistent unit usage is vital.

11. Comparative Advantage and Terms of Trade |

Comparative advantage exists when a country can produce a good at a lower opportunity cost than another country. Calculate opportunity cost: for Country A, the opportunity cost of 1 unit of X is how many units of Y must be sacrificed (e.g., if A can produce 10X or 20Y, the opportunity cost of 1X is 2Y). The country with the lower opportunity cost of X should specialise in X. The terms of trade index = (index of export prices ÷ index of import prices) × 100. A favourable movement in the terms of trade means a country can buy more imports for a given quantity of exports.

计算机会成本:对于 A 国,生产 1 单位 X 的机会成本是必须牺牲多少单位的 Y(例如,若 A 国可生产 10X 或 20Y,则 1X 的机会成本为 2Y)。
