1. Introduction to Production Costs | 生产成本概述

Production costs are the expenses a firm bears when turning inputs (land, labour, capital, enterprise) into goods or services. Economists distinguish between the short run, where at least one factor of production is fixed, and the long run, where all factors can be varied. This division determines which costs are unavoidable and which can be adjusted.

2. Fixed Costs (FC) | 固定成本

Fixed costs are expenses that do not change with the level of output in the short run. They must be paid even if the firm produces nothing. Common examples include rent for factory premises, salaries of permanent staff, insurance premiums and loan repayments. Because total fixed cost (TFC) remains constant as output rises, the fixed cost per unit – called average fixed cost (AFC) – falls continuously. This is known as ‘spreading overheads’.

A firm with high fixed costs, such as an airline, has a strong incentive to operate at high capacity to lower its AFC. For example, once an airline has leased an aircraft, the lease payment does not change whether the flight is half full or fully booked.

3. Variable Costs (VC) | 可变成本

Variable costs change directly with the level of output. If a firm produces more, its total variable cost (TVC) rises; if it produces less, TVC falls. Typical variable costs include raw materials, packaging, hourly wages for production workers, and energy used in manufacturing. In the short run, only variable costs can be altered to adjust output.

4. Total Cost (TC = FC + VC) | 总成本

Total cost is the sum of total fixed costs and total variable costs at any given output level. It shows the complete expense a firm faces to produce that quantity. The total cost equation is straightforward:

TC = TFC + TVC

Even when output is zero, total cost equals total fixed cost because variable cost is zero. As output increases, TC rises because TVC increases, while TFC stays the same. The vertical distance between the TC curve and the TVC curve is constant and equal to TFC.

5. Average Costs (AFC, AVC, ATC) | 平均成本

Average costs express cost per unit of output and are vital for pricing decisions. There are three key types:

ATC = TC / Q = AFC + AVC

Average fixed cost (AFC) declines continuously as output (Q) grows, giving a downward-sloping rectangular hyperbola. Average variable cost (AVC) typically falls initially as efficiency improves, reaches a minimum, and then rises due to diminishing returns. Average total cost (ATC) is the sum of AFC and AVC; it is U-shaped because early gains from spreading fixed costs outweigh rising AVC, but eventually the rise in AVC dominates.

6. Marginal Cost (MC) | 边际成本

Marginal cost is the extra cost of producing one more unit of output. It is calculated as the change in total cost (or change in total variable cost) divided by the change in quantity:

MC = ΔTC / ΔQ = ΔTVC / ΔQ

Because fixed costs do not change with output, MC depends entirely on variable costs. Marginal cost is perhaps the most important cost concept for decision-making: a profit-maximising firm will compare MC with marginal revenue (MR) to choose the best output level. MC typically falls at very low output due to specialisation gains, but then rises as the law of diminishing marginal returns sets in.

7. Short-Run Cost Curves | 短期成本曲线

In the short run, the shapes of the cost curves are governed by the fact that at least one factor is fixed. The typical diagram features AFC declining continuously, while AVC and ATC are U-shaped. The marginal cost curve also has a U-shape and cuts both the AVC and ATC curves at their minimum points.

Why are AVC and ATC U-shaped? Initially, adding variable factors to fixed factors raises productivity, so cost per unit falls. Beyond a certain point, the fixed factors become over-utilised, and diminishing returns push up marginal and average variable costs. This causes the ATC to eventually rise, even though AFC keeps falling.

8. The MC and ATC Relationship | MC 与 ATC 的关系

A vital rule in cost theory is that the marginal cost curve always intersects the average total cost curve at the lowest point of the ATC. When MC is below ATC, it pulls the average down; when MC is above ATC, it pushes the average up. The same logic applies to the relationship between MC and AVC.

This ‘average-marginal rule’ is a universal statistical principle: if the marginal (additional) value exceeds the average, the average rises; if the marginal value is lower than the average, the average falls. As long as the cost of making one more unit is less than the current average, producing that unit reduces the average cost.

Students often need to identify the point where MC = ATC as the point of productive efficiency (the lowest cost per unit).

9. Long-Run Average Cost and Economies of Scale | 长期平均成本与规模经济

In the long run, all factors of production are variable. The long-run average cost (LRAC) curve is derived from the lowest possible short-run average cost for each output level. The LRAC is typically drawn as a U-shaped ‘envelope’ curve that touches each short-run ATC curve tangentially.

在长期中,所有生产要素都是可变的。长期平均成本 (LRAC) 曲线由每一产量水平上可能的最低短期平均成本推导而来。LRAC 通常被画成一条 U 形的”包络”曲线,与每条短期 ATC 曲线相切。

Economies of scale occur when the LRAC falls as output increases. This means the firm becomes more efficient on a cost-per-unit basis by growing in size. After the optimum scale, diseconomies of scale may set in, causing the LRAC to rise.

10. Internal Economies of Scale | 内部规模经济

Internal economies of scale arise from the growth of the firm itself. They are advantages that lower unit costs regardless of what is happening in the wider industry. The main types are:

Technical economies Large firms can afford advanced machinery, assembly-line production and dedicated R&D, boosting output per input. 大型企业能够负担先进机械、流水线生产和专门的研发,提高单位投入的产出。

11. External Economies of Scale | 外部规模经济

External economies of scale benefit all firms in an industry as the industry as a whole grows, not just a single firm. These arise from factors outside the individual firm’s control.

Examples include the development of a specialised local labour pool (e.g., tech talent in a science park), better transport infrastructure built to serve a growing industrial cluster, and the emergence of ancillary services or supplier networks that reduce costs for every firm. When multiple firms locate close together, they can share knowledge and innovation, a form of agglomeration economy.

Both internal and external economies shift the LRAC downwards, reinforcing the benefits of scale.

12. Diseconomies of Scale | 规模不经济

Diseconomies of scale occur when a firm or industry grows so large that unit costs start to increase. This causes the LRAC to slope upward. The main causes are internal: communication problems, slower decision-making, low morale in a vast workforce and coordination difficulties across many layers of management.

规模不经济发生在企业或行业规模过大导致单位成本开始上升时。这导致 LRAC 向上倾斜。主要原因来自内部:沟通问题、决策放缓、庞大员工队伍士气低下以及跨多层管理的协调困难。

In a very large factory, workers may feel alienated and productivity can drop. Overly bureaucratic procedures can waste time and resources. As a result, the cost per unit begins to rise. External diseconomies are also possible – for example, when an entire industry concentrates in one region, traffic congestion and higher rents can push up costs for all firms.

The minimum efficient scale (MES) is the lowest output at which the firm fully exploits economies of scale. Beyond the MES, further expansion may invite diseconomies and rising LRAC.
