Displacement is the straight-line distance from the start point to the end point, in a specific direction. It is a vector quantity also measured in metres.

For example, if you walk 3 m east and then 4 m north, the distance is 7 m. The displacement is 5 m north-east (using Pythagoras’ theorem).

3. Speed and Velocity | 速率与速度

Speed is the rate at which an object covers distance. It is a scalar quantity. The average speed is calculated as distance divided by time.

Mass is the amount of matter in an object. It is a scalar quantity measured in kilograms (kg). Mass is constant regardless of location; an object has the same mass on Earth, the Moon, or in deep space.

Weight is the force of gravity acting on an object’s mass. It is a vector quantity measured in newtons (N). Weight depends on the gravitational field strength (g).

weight = mass x gravitational field strength (W = m × g)
