📚 GCSE CIE Business Studies: Marketing Revision Notes | GCSE CIE

Marketing is the process of identifying, anticipating, and satisfying customer needs profitably. It is more than just advertising or selling – it involves researching the market, developing products, setting the right price, choosing distribution channels, and promoting effectively. In the CIE IGCSE Business Studies syllabus, marketing plays a central role in helping businesses understand their customers and compete successfully.

1. Introduction to Marketing |

Marketing aims to create value for customers and build strong customer relationships. A successful marketing department ensures that a business produces the right goods at the right time, at the right price, and in the right place, supported by effective promotion. It covers both consumer goods and services, and it can be applied in all types of organisations, including for-profit businesses, charities, and public-sector bodies.

The marketing function coordinates with other business areas such as operations, finance, and human resources. Market research provides data on consumer preferences, which feed into product design and pricing decisions. Marketing also helps to forecast demand, so production can be planned and budgets set.

2. Market Orientation vs Product Orientation |

A market-oriented business puts customer needs at the heart of all its decisions. It continuously researches the market, monitors competitors, and adapts its products according to changing trends. For example, a smartphone manufacturer that surveys users and adds features based on feedback is market-oriented.

In contrast, a product-oriented business focuses on the quality and features of its own products, often believing that a technically superior product will sell itself. This approach can work for innovative or high-tech products, but it carries the risk of ignoring what customers actually want. Many firms have shifted from product orientation to market orientation to remain competitive.

Key contrast: Market orientation = driven by customer needs; Product orientation = driven by product features.

3. Market Segmentation |

Market segmentation means dividing a broad market into smaller, more manageable groups of consumers with similar characteristics. This allows a business to target its products and marketing messages more precisely. The four main segmentation bases are:

  • Demographic segmentation – age, gender, income, occupation, education. /
  • Geographic segmentation – region, climate, urban vs rural. /
  • Psychographic segmentation – lifestyle, personality, values, social class. /
  • Behavioural segmentation – purchase frequency, brand loyalty, usage rate, benefits sought. /

By using segmentation, a business can develop a marketing mix that appeals to a specific segment, reducing waste in advertising and increasing customer satisfaction. For instance, a sportswear brand might target young, active consumers with a high-income demographic.

4. Target Market |

Once segments are identified, a business selects one or more to focus on – this is its target market. Targeting strategies include:

  • Undifferentiated marketing (mass market) – one product, one marketing mix for the whole market (e.g., basic food items like bread). /
  • Differentiated marketing – separate products and marketing mixes for different segments (e.g., a car maker offering economy, family, and luxury models).
  • Concentrated marketing (niche) – focusing on one narrow segment and tailoring everything to it (e.g., vegan cosmetics). /

Choosing the right targeting approach depends on the business’s resources, the nature of the product, and competition. A small firm may start with a niche strategy to build a strong reputation before expanding.

5. The Marketing Mix: Product |

The marketing mix – often called the ‘4Ps’ – consists of Product, Price, Place, and Promotion. The product is the good or service offered to meet customer needs. Decisions include design, features, quality, branding, packaging, and product range. A key concept is the product life cycle, which has five stages:

  • Development / 开发
  • Introduction / 导入
  • Growth / 成长
  • Maturity / 成熟
  • Decline / 衰退

Understanding the product life cycle helps a business plan marketing strategies. For example, during the introduction stage, promotion might be heavy to build awareness, while in maturity, the focus may shift to differentiation and competitive pricing.

Branding is crucial: a strong brand can command premium prices and foster customer loyalty. Packaging also serves as a ‘silent salesman’, protecting the product and communicating brand values.

6. The Marketing Mix: Price |

Pricing is a powerful competitive tool. The right price must cover costs, earn a profit, and be acceptable to customers. Main pricing strategies include:

Add a fixed percentage to unit cost / 在单位成本上加成一定百分比 A bakery adding 50% to costs / 面包店加成 50%
Set price in line with rivals / 价格与竞争对手看齐 Similar petrol prices / 相近的汽油价格
Skimming (or cream) pricing / 撇脂定价 High price for an innovative product, then lower over time / 创新产品高价推出,随后逐步降价 New smartphone at launch / 新款智能手机发布
Prices that appear cheaper, e.g., £9.99 instead of £10 / 让价格看起来更便宜,如 £9.99 代替 £10 Most retail products / 多数零售产品

Price elasticity of demand also matters: if demand is price elastic, a price cut may raise total revenue; if inelastic, a price rise may increase revenue. Businesses must consider costs, competition, and market conditions when setting prices.

7. The Marketing Mix: Place (Distribution) |

Place refers to how products reach the customer. Distribution channels can be direct (producer to consumer) or indirect, using intermediaries such as wholesalers and retailers. The choice depends on product type, target market, and business size.

  • Direct selling – e-commerce, own stores, mail order. /
  • One-level channel – producer → retailer → consumer (e.g., supermarkets). /
  • Two-level channel – producer → wholesaler → retailer → consumer (common in food and consumer goods). /

Increasingly, e-commerce enables even small businesses to sell directly via websites and social media. The aim is to make products available at the right time and location, with adequate stock levels, while keeping distribution costs efficient.

8. The Marketing Mix: Promotion |

Promotion covers all activities that communicate the benefits of a product to potential customers. The main promotional methods form the ‘promotional mix’:

  • Advertising – paid, non-personal communication through media like TV, radio, online, print, and outdoor. /
  • Sales promotion – short-term incentives such as discounts, coupons, contests, free samples. /
  • Public relations (PR) – managing the business’s image through press releases, events, sponsorship, and community involvement. /
  • Personal selling – face-to-face interaction to persuade customers, used for complex or expensive products. /
  • Direct marketing – contacting customers directly via email, phone, post, or social media. /

An effective promotional strategy aligns with the target market and stage in the product life cycle. A launch may need heavy advertising and PR, while a mature product might rely on sales promotions to maintain market share.

9. Marketing Strategy and Planning |

A marketing strategy is a long-term plan to achieve marketing goals, such as increasing market share, entering a new market, or launching a new product. It integrates findings from market research, segmentation, targeting, and the design of the marketing mix.

Businesses often use a SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) when planning. A marketing budget must be set, and control systems put in place to monitor performance against targets. Measures could include sales volumes, market share, or brand awareness.

Modern planning also considers digital channels and data analytics. Social media metrics, website traffic, and conversion rates help firms adjust strategies quickly.

10. Market Research |

Market research gathers, records, and analyses information about customers, competitors, and the market. It reduces the risk of product failure and supports informed decision-making. There are two main types:

  • Primary (field) research – collecting original data directly from respondents through surveys, interviews, focus groups, and observation. It is up-to-date and specific but costly and time-consuming.
  • Secondary (desk) research – using existing information from internal records (sales data, website analytics) or external sources (government statistics, trade journals, online reports). It is quicker and cheaper, but may be outdated or not fully relevant.

Research can be quantitative (numerical data on how many, how often) or qualitative (in-depth views on why, how). A mix of both often provides the most complete picture.

11. Marketing in the Digital Age |

Digital technology has transformed marketing. Businesses now use websites, search engine optimisation (SEO), pay-per-click advertising, social media (Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn), email marketing, and influencer partnerships to reach consumers. Digital tools allow precise targeting and detailed analytics, so marketers can measure return on investment more accurately.

Social media marketing encourages two-way engagement, building communities around a brand. Viral campaigns can create rapid awareness at low cost, but they also carry risks if messages are misinterpreted. E-commerce and mobile apps further blur the line between promotion and direct sales.

Digital marketing is especially important for reaching younger demographics and for small businesses with limited budgets. However, data protection regulations (such as GDPR) require businesses to handle customer data responsibly.
