1. Kinematics | 运动学
In kinematics you must distinguish between scalars (e.g. speed, distance) and vectors (e.g. velocity, displacement). Speed is how fast something moves; velocity is speed in a given direction.
Distance-time and velocity-time graphs are key tools. The gradient of a distance-time graph gives speed; the gradient of a velocity-time graph gives acceleration, and the area under it gives displacement.
For uniform acceleration, learn the SUVAT equations. They link initial velocity u, final velocity v, acceleration a, time t and displacement s.
v = u + at s = ut + ½at² v² = u² + 2as
Free fall near Earth’s surface uses acceleration due to gravity g ≈ 9.8 m/s² (often rounded to 10 m/s²). Remember that air resistance is often ignored in simple models.
2. Forces and Newton’s Laws |
A force is a push or pull that can change an object’s shape or motion. The resultant force is the single force that has the same effect as all the forces acting together. If the resultant force is zero, the object remains at rest or moves with constant velocity (Newton’s First Law).
Newton’s Second Law states that acceleration is proportional to resultant force and inversely proportional to mass.
F = ma
The weight of an object is the gravitational force on it: W = mg. Mass is a scalar measured in kg; weight is a vector measured in newtons.
Newton’s Third Law says that if object A exerts a force on object B, then B exerts an equal and opposite force on A. These forces act on different objects and never cancel.
Hooke’s Law applies to springs within the elastic limit: extension is proportional to load.

F = kx
Here k is the spring constant and x is the extension. Beyond the elastic limit, the spring is permanently deformed.
3. Energy, Work and Power |
Energy is the capacity to do work and is conserved: it can be transferred or stored but never created or destroyed. Common stores include kinetic, gravitational potential, thermal and chemical energy.
Work is done when a force moves an object in its direction. If the force F moves a distance d parallel to the force, then work W = Fd. The unit is the joule (J).
Kinetic energy Eₖ and gravitational potential energy Eₚ are two key forms.
Eₖ = ½mv² Eₚ = mgh
Power is the rate of doing work or transferring energy. P = E / t (or W / t). The unit is the watt (W).

Efficiency is the ratio of useful output energy (or power) to total input energy. It can be expressed as a decimal or percentage.
Efficiency = Useful output energy / Total input energy
In all real processes, some energy is transferred to thermal stores in the surroundings, reducing efficiency.
4. Waves | 波
Waves transfer energy without transferring matter. In transverse waves, vibrations are perpendicular to the direction of energy transfer (e.g. light, water waves). In longitudinal waves, vibrations are parallel (e.g. sound).
Wave speed v, frequency f and wavelength λ are related by the wave equation.
v = f λ
All waves can be reflected, refracted and diffracted. Reflection follows the law of reflection (angle of incidence = angle of reflection). Refraction involves a change in speed and direction when a wave enters a new medium.
For light, the refractive index n describes how much the light slows down. Snell’s law links the angles and refractive indices.
n = sin i / sin r
When light travels from a denser to a rarer medium, total internal reflection can occur if the angle of incidence is greater than the critical angle c. The critical angle is given by sin c = 1/n.

Ohm’s law states that for a resistor at constant temperature, V is proportional to I.
V = IR
In series circuits, current is the same everywhere, total resistance R_total = R₁ + R₂ + …, and the supply voltage is shared. In parallel circuits, the voltage across each branch is the same, and total current is the sum of branch currents. The reciprocal formula for resistance is 1/R_total = 1/R₁ + 1/R₂ + …

6. Magnetism and Electromagnetism |
Magnets have north and south poles; like poles repel, unlike poles attract. A magnetic field line shows the direction a north pole would move. Electromagnets use a coil of wire (solenoid) around a soft iron core to produce a strong magnetic field when current flows.
