1. Atomic Structure and the Periodic Table |

Atoms consist of a nucleus containing protons and neutrons, surrounded by electrons in shells. The atomic number is the number of protons, and the mass number is the sum of protons and neutrons.

Isotopes are atoms of the same element with the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons. Relative atomic mass (Aᵣ) is the weighted average mass of isotopes compared to 1/12th of carbon-12.

The periodic table is arranged in order of increasing atomic number. Elements in the same group have the same number of outer electrons and similar chemical properties. Group 1 are alkali metals, Group 7 are halogens, Group 0 are noble gases.

Subatomic particle Relative charge Relative mass
Proton +1 1
Neutron 0 1
Electron -1 1/1836

Electron configuration: the first shell holds up to 2 electrons, second and third hold up to 8. Dot-and-cross diagrams show outer electrons only.

2. Bonding and Structure |

Ionic bonding occurs between metals and non-metals, involving transfer of electrons to form oppositely charged ions held together by strong electrostatic forces. Ionic compounds have high melting points, conduct electricity when molten or in solution, but not as solids.

Covalent bonding occurs between non-metal atoms sharing pairs of electrons. Simple molecular substances have low melting points, do not conduct electricity. Giant covalent structures like diamond, graphite, and silicon dioxide have very high melting points. Graphite conducts electricity due to delocalised electrons between layers.

Metallic bonding involves a regular lattice of metal cations surrounded by a sea of delocalised electrons. This explains malleability, high melting points, and electrical conductivity of metals.

Alloys are mixtures of metals with other elements; the different-sized atoms disrupt the regular layers, making the alloy harder than pure metals.

3. Quantitative Chemistry (Moles) |

The mole is the unit for amount of substance. One mole contains 6.02 × 10²³ particles (Avogadro constant). The relative formula mass (Mᵣ) is the sum of relative atomic masses in a formula.

n = mass / Mᵣ    (moles = mass in g ÷ molar mass in g/mol)

For solutions: concentration (mol/dm³) = amount (mol) / volume (dm³). Remember 1 dm³ = 1000 cm³. Also, atom economy = (Mᵣ of desired product / sum of Mᵣ of all reactants) × 100%.

Percentage yield = (actual yield / theoretical yield) × 100%. Yield can be reduced by incomplete reactions, side reactions, and product lost during separation.

Empirical formula is the simplest whole-number ratio of atoms in a compound. Use moles to find the ratio from mass or percentage data.

4. Acids, Bases and Salts |

Acids are substances that release hydrogen ions (H⁺) in water. Bases neutralise acids to form salts and water. Alkalis are soluble bases releasing hydroxide ions (OH⁻).

The pH scale from 0 to 14 measures acidity: below 7 is acidic, 7 is neutral, above 7 is alkaline. Universal indicator shows colour changes across the range.

acid + base → salt + water    (neutralisation)

acid + metal → salt + hydrogen

Salts can be prepared by titration (soluble salts from an acid and an alkali) or by reacting an excess of an insoluble base, metal, or carbonate with an acid, followed by filtration and crystallisation.

Strong acids fully ionise in water (e.g. HCl, HNO₃, H₂SO₄). Weak acids partially ionise (e.g. ethanoic acid). For the same concentration, strong acids have a lower pH and react more vigorously.

5. Electrolysis | 电解

Electrolysis is the decomposition of an ionic substance when molten or in solution by passing an electric current. The electrolyte is the liquid that conducts electricity.

Positive ions (cations) move to the cathode (negative electrode) and gain electrons (reduction). Negative ions (anions) move to the anode (positive electrode) and lose electrons (oxidation).

In molten lead(II) bromide, lead forms at the cathode and bromine at the anode. In aqueous solutions, the products depend on the reactivity of the elements involved. At the cathode, hydrogen is produced if the metal is more reactive than hydrogen; otherwise the metal plates out. At the anode, oxygen is produced from OH⁻ ions unless a halide ion is present, in which case the halogen is discharged.

Electrolysis is used to extract aluminium from aluminium oxide (dissolved in molten cryolite), and to produce chlorine, hydrogen and sodium hydroxide from brine.

6. Energy Changes |

Exothermic reactions release heat energy to the surroundings, causing a temperature rise (e.g. combustion, neutralisation). Endothermic reactions absorb energy from the surroundings, causing a temperature drop (e.g. thermal decomposition, photosynthesis).

Reaction profiles show energy changes during a reaction. The activation energy is the minimum energy required for reactants to collide successfully.

Bond breaking is endothermic (requires energy). Bond making is exothermic (releases energy). Use bond energies to calculate overall enthalpy change: ΔH = sum of bonds broken − sum of bonds made.

Energy change per gram in a simple calorimeter can be calculated using q = m c ΔT, where m is mass of water, c = 4.2 J/g°C. Then divide by moles to get kJ/mol. Be aware of possible heat loss reducing accuracy.

7. Rates of Reaction and Equilibrium |

The rate of a reaction can be measured by change in mass, volume of gas produced, or precipitate formation. Factors increasing rate: higher temperature, higher concentration (or pressure for gases), larger surface area of solid reactants, and use of a catalyst.

Particles must collide with sufficient energy (activation energy) and correct orientation for a reaction to occur. Increasing temperature increases the frequency and energy of collisions, and more particles exceed activation energy.

Catalysts provide an alternative reaction pathway with lower activation energy; they are not used up in the reaction.

Reversible reactions reach a dynamic equilibrium in a closed system when the forward and reverse rates are equal. Le Chatelier’s principle: if conditions change, equilibrium shifts to oppose the change.

Increasing temperature favours the endothermic direction; increasing pressure favours the side with fewer gas molecules. Adding a catalyst speeds up both forward and backward reactions equally; equilibrium position does not change.
