1. Ecosystems and Habitats |
An ecosystem is a community of living organisms interacting with each other and their non-living environment. It includes both biotic factors, such as plants and animals, and abiotic factors, such as temperature, water, and soil. A habitat is the specific place within an ecosystem where an organism lives, providing it with food, shelter, and a place to reproduce.
Population refers to all the individuals of the same species living in a particular habitat. Community describes all the populations of different species living together in an ecosystem. The interdependence of species means that changes in one population can affect others, often through feeding relationships or competition for resources.
2. Food Chains and Food Webs |
A food chain shows the linear transfer of energy from one organism to another as each eats and is eaten. It starts with a producer, typically a green plant that makes its own food via photosynthesis. Primary consumers (herbivores) eat producers, secondary consumers eat primary consumers, and so on. The arrow in a food chain points from the eaten to the eater, showing the direction of energy flow.
A food web is a network of interconnected food chains, showing the more realistic feeding relationships in an ecosystem. Organisms may eat more than one type of food and may in turn be eaten by several predators. Disruption to one species in a food web can have knock-on effects on many others, illustrating the complexity of ecological balance.
3. Pyramids of Biomass and Energy Flow |
A pyramid of biomass represents the total dry mass of organisms at each trophic level in a food chain. The producer level has the greatest biomass, and biomass decreases at each successive level. This is because energy is lost at every stage: some parts of organisms are not eaten (e.g., bones, roots), and much of the energy consumed is used for respiration, movement, and heat, leaving only about 10% to be converted into new biomass.
Because of this energy loss, food chains rarely have more than four or five trophic levels. The inefficiency of energy transfer explains why it is more sustainable to eat lower down the food chain, as less energy is wasted.
4. The Carbon Cycle |
Carbon is a fundamental element in all living organisms and cycles between the atmosphere, land, and oceans. The main processes in the carbon cycle include photosynthesis (plants convert CO₂ and water into glucose), respiration (organisms release CO₂ back into the atmosphere), combustion (burning fossil fuels releases CO₂), and decomposition (microorganisms break down dead matter, releasing CO₂).
Oceans absorb large amounts of CO₂ from the atmosphere, forming carbonic acid and affecting marine life. The removal of forests reduces the removal of CO₂ by photosynthesis, contributing to rising atmospheric CO₂ levels and climate change.
5. The Water Cycle | 水循环
The water cycle, or hydrological cycle, describes the continuous movement of water on, above, and below the surface of the Earth. Key processes include evaporation (water turning into vapor from oceans and lakes), transpiration (water released from plant leaves), condensation (water vapor forming clouds as it cools), precipitation (rain, snow, sleet, or hail), and runoff (water flowing over the ground into rivers and seas).
Deforestation can disrupt the water cycle by reducing transpiration and increasing runoff, leading to flooding and soil erosion. The water cycle is essential for distributing fresh water, which all terrestrial organisms depend upon.
6. Global Warming and the Greenhouse Effect |
The greenhouse effect is a natural process where certain gases in the atmosphere trap heat from the Sun, keeping the Earth warm enough for life. Without it, the average temperature would be about -18°C instead of the current 15°C. Human activities, however, have intensified this effect, leading to global warming.
The main greenhouse gases and their sources are:
| Greenhouse Gas (温室气体) | Major Sources (主要来源) |
| Carbon dioxide (CO₂) | Burning fossil fuels, deforestation |
| Methane (CH₄) | Cattle farming, rice paddies, landfill decay |
| Nitrous oxide (N₂O) | Fertilizers, industrial processes |
| Water vapour (H₂O) | Natural evaporation, a feedback effect from warming |
Consequences of global warming include rising sea levels due to melting ice caps, more frequent extreme weather events, changes in agricultural yields, and damage to ecosystems. Reducing emissions and switching to renewable energy sources are critical mitigation strategies.
7. Acid Rain |
Acid rain is precipitation with a pH lower than 5.6, caused by the release of sulfur dioxide (SO₂) and nitrogen oxides (NOₓ) into the atmosphere. These gases come mainly from burning fossil fuels in power stations and vehicles. They react with water vapour and oxygen in the atmosphere to form sulfuric acid and nitric acid, which fall as acid rain.
Acid rain damages forests by leaching nutrients from the soil and releasing toxic aluminium ions. It also acidifies lakes and rivers, harming aquatic life such as fish and amphibians. Furthermore, it corrodes buildings and monuments made of limestone and marble. Solutions include fitting ‘scrubbers’ to power station chimneys and using catalytic converters in cars.
8. Ozone Layer Depletion |
The ozone layer in the stratosphere absorbs most of the Sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Ozone depletion is mainly caused by chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which were widely used in refrigerators, aerosol sprays, and cleaning solvents. When CFCs reach the upper atmosphere, UV light breaks them down, releasing chlorine atoms that catalyze the destruction of ozone (O₃) molecules.
This leads to increased UV radiation reaching the Earth’s surface, causing higher rates of skin cancer, cataracts, and damage to crops and marine phytoplankton. The Montreal Protocol (1987) successfully phased out the use of CFCs, and the ozone layer is slowly recovering.
9. Pollution – Air and Water |
Air pollution extends beyond greenhouse gases and includes particulate matter (PM₂.₅ and PM₁₀), carbon monoxide (CO), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These pollutants come from vehicle exhausts, industrial processes, and the burning of solid fuels. They cause respiratory problems, smog, and can contribute to heart disease.
Water pollution includes untreated sewage, agricultural runoff (fertilizers and pesticides), and industrial waste. Excess nitrates and phosphates cause eutrophication: algal blooms block sunlight, then die and decompose, using up dissolved oxygen and killing fish. Oil spills and plastic waste also severely affect marine ecosystems.
10. Biodiversity and Conservation |
Biodiversity is the variety of life on Earth, including species diversity, genetic diversity within species, and ecosystem diversity. High biodiversity ensures ecosystem resilience, as different species perform different roles. Human activities such as habitat destruction, overexploitation, pollution, and climate change are causing a rapid decline in biodiversity.
Conservation methods include establishing nature reserves and national parks, breeding programmes for endangered species, seed banks to preserve plant genetic material, and international laws such as CITES that restrict trade in endangered species. Sustainable practices in agriculture, forestry, and fisheries also help to maintain biodiversity.
11. Sustainable Development |
Sustainable development aims to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It involves balancing economic development, social well-being, and environmental protection. Renewable energy sources (solar, wind, hydroelectric) and recycling reduce the pressure on natural resources.
Other strategies include designing products for longer lifespans, reducing packaging, promoting public transport, and adopting circular economy principles where waste is minimized. On a personal level, reducing energy consumption, eating less meat, and using less water all contribute to a more sustainable future.
