Economic growth is one of the most important macroeconomic objectives for any country. In the WJEC GCSE Economics specification, understanding economic growth means knowing how to define it, measure it, analyse its causes and consequences, and evaluate the policies governments use to achieve sustainable growth. This revision guide covers all the essential points you need for your exam.

1. Definition of Economic Growth |

Economic growth is defined as a sustained increase in the real value of goods and services produced by an economy over a period of time. It is commonly measured by the percentage change in real Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

There is a distinction between actual growth (an increase in real GDP) and potential growth (an increase in the productive capacity of the economy). Potential growth is represented by an outward shift of the production possibility frontier (PPF).

Economic growth is usually expressed as an annual percentage rate. For example, the UK government targets stable and sustainable growth of around 2-2.5% per year.

2. Measuring Economic Growth |

Nominal GDP measures the value of output at current prices, but this can be misleading when prices rise. Real GDP adjusts for inflation to show the true volume of output.

The formula to convert nominal GDP to real GDP is:

Real GDP = (Nominal GDP ÷ Price Index) × 100

Where the price index is often the GDP deflator or the Consumer Price Index (CPI).

To compare living standards across countries or over time, economists use real GDP per capita, which is real GDP divided by the population. This gives a better indication of average income.

The economic growth rate is calculated as:

Growth Rate (%) = [(Real GDP₂ − Real GDP₁) ÷ Real GDP₁] × 100

A positive growth rate indicates expansion; a negative growth rate over two consecutive quarters is officially called a recession.

3. Causes of Economic Growth |

Economic growth can be driven by an increase in the quantity or quality of factors of production:

Land: Discovery of new natural resources (e.g. oil, minerals) or improved land use increases output.

Labour: A larger workforce (through population growth or immigration) and higher labour productivity (through education, training and better health) boost GDP.

Capital: Investment in physical capital (machinery, factories, infrastructure) expands productive capacity. This is often financed by savings and foreign
