A sole trader is a business owned and run by one person. The owner keeps all the profits but also bears unlimited liability, meaning personal assets are at risk if the business fails. Decision-making is quick because there are no partners to consult.

A partnership involves two or more people sharing ownership. Partners pool capital, skills and workloads, which can help the business grow faster. However, profits must be shared, and disagreements between partners can slow down decisions. Like sole traders, partners usually have unlimited liability, unless a limited liability partnership is formed.

A private limited company (Ltd) can sell shares privately to family and friends but not to the general public. Shareholders enjoy limited liability, protecting personal wealth. The company is a separate legal entity. However, shares are not freely transferable, and legal requirements add administration costs.

A public limited company (plc) can advertise and sell shares on a stock exchange to any investor. This allows it to raise large amounts of capital for expansion. On the downside, plcs face stricter regulations, must publish financial accounts, and risk takeover if outsiders buy a controlling share. Convertibility from Ltd to plc requires meeting certain thresholds.

Unlimited liability means the owner’s personal possessions – such as a house, car or savings – can be seized to pay off business debts. Sole traders and ordinary partners face this risk, which can discourage entrepreneurship when large debts are anticipated.

Limited liability restricts the shareholders’ loss to the amount they invested in the company’s shares. Their personal assets remain safe. This encourages investment in larger companies and allows risk-taking without personal ruin. The business itself, as a separate legal entity, is responsible for its debts.

Internal recruitment fills a vacancy by selecting an existing employee from within the organisation. It is cheaper, quicker and boosts staff morale because it shows promotion opportunities. The candidate already knows the business culture. However, it limits the pool to current staff and creates another vacancy elsewhere.

External recruitment advertises the job to outsiders. This brings new ideas, skills and experiences into the business. The talent pool is wider, making it easier to find a specialist. Disadvantages include higher advertising and selection costs, longer induction time, and the risk that an outsider may not fit the company culture.

On-the-job training takes place at the workplace while the employee is actually doing the job. It can be delivered by a supervisor or an experienced colleague. This method is cost-effective because no external providers are hired, and the trainee continues to produce output. However, the quality of training may vary, and poor habits can be passed on.

Off-the-job training happens away from the normal work station, such as at a college, conference or training centre. It uses specialist instructors and often leads to a recognised qualification. Employees are not distracted by daily tasks and can focus fully on learning. The main drawbacks are the higher cost, the time away from work, and the fact that skills learnt may not directly apply to the specific workplace.

Primary research collects brand-new data directly from the source for a specific purpose. Methods include questionnaires, interviews, focus groups and observation. The data is up-to-date, relevant and confidential to the business, but it is time-consuming and expensive to gather, and the sample size may be limited.

Secondary research uses data that already exists, collected by others for a different purpose. Sources include government reports, trade journals, competitors’ websites and internal sales records. It is quicker, cheaper and often provides a broader overview. Yet the data may be outdated, not tailored to the business’s exact needs, and available to competitors too.

Demand is price elastic when a change in price leads to a more than proportionate change in quantity demanded. For example, a 10% price rise causes quantity demanded to fall by more than 10%. Products with many substitutes, such as branded trainers, tend to be price elastic. Businesses must be cautious with price increases as total revenue may fall.

Demand is price inelastic when a change in price results in a less than proportionate change in quantity demanded. A 10% price rise might only reduce demand by, say, 5%. Necessities like electricity or addictive products like cigarettes often have inelastic demand. Firms can raise prices to boost revenue without losing many customers, but government regulation and ethical concerns may apply.

A product-oriented business focuses on producing high-quality, innovative goods and believes customers will buy them if they are technically superior. It relies on research and development (R&D) to drive sales, with less attention paid to consumer feedback. This approach can work for technologically advanced items like premium cameras, but it risks missing market trends.

A market-oriented business puts customer needs at the centre. It undertakes extensive market research, then designs and adapts products accordingly. This reduces risk because products match what customers actually want. Most modern businesses in competitive markets, such as fast-food chains, are market-oriented, but constant research can be expensive and pace quick.

Job production makes a single, unique product to a customer’s specific order, such as a custom-built house or a wedding cake. It offers high quality, flexibility and motivated skilled workers, but unit costs are high, output is slow, and it is difficult to scale up. Each item is likely to be one-off.

Flow production (also called mass production) uses an assembly line with a continuous process, producing large quantities of standardised goods like canned drinks or cars. This achieves economies of scale, so unit costs are low. However, it is capital-intensive, workers may become bored, and the process is inflexible – if one machine breaks, the whole line can stop. High initial investment in machinery is required.

Lean production aims to eliminate waste in all forms – time, materials, movement – and often works with a just-in-time (JIT) stock system. Materials arrive exactly when needed for production. This reduces storage costs, releases cash and highlights inefficiencies. However, it relies heavily on reliable suppliers and a steady workflow; any delay can halt production.

Just-in-case (JIC) stock management keeps large buffer stocks to guard against unexpected supply disruptions or sudden demand surges. This ensures production never stops and customer orders can always be met. The costs, however, include high warehousing expenses, cash tied up in stock, and the risk of obsolescence or spoilage. Many firms use a hybrid, holding buffer for critical components while applying lean elsewhere.
