📚 IGCSE AQA Computer Science: Operating Systems Key Points | IGCSE AQA

Every modern computer system relies on a fundamental piece of software called the operating system. It acts as the bridge between the user, the hardware, and the applications. Understanding its role is essential for the IGCSE AQA Computer Science syllabus.

1. What is an Operating System? |

An operating system (OS) is a collection of system software that manages computer hardware and software resources. It provides a platform on which application programs can run, handling tasks such as memory allocation, file management, and processor scheduling.

Without an operating system, a computer would be unable to perform even the most basic functions, requiring users to interact directly with the hardware using complex machine code.

Examples of popular operating systems include Microsoft Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS. Each is designed for a specific range of devices and user needs.

2. Core Functions of an Operating System |

The OS performs several critical jobs that keep a computer usable and efficient. These can be grouped as follows:

  • Resource management: allocating CPU time, memory, and storage to running programs.
  • User interface: providing a way for humans to interact with the machine (e.g., graphical or command-line).
  • Peripheral control: managing input and output devices such as keyboards, printers, and displays.
  • File management: organising and controlling access to data stored on drives.
  • Security: protecting the system from unauthorised access and malware.

In the AQA syllabus, you must be able to describe these functions and explain how the OS achieves them.

3. Resource Management and Scheduling |

The CPU can only process one instruction at a time, yet a modern OS gives the illusion that many programs run simultaneously. This is achieved through scheduling – the OS rapidly switches the processor between tasks, giving each a small time slice.

The scheduler decides which process gets the CPU next based on priority, fairness, or waiting time. This is a key part of multi-tasking.

Memory is also a managed resource. The OS allocates RAM to active programs and ensures one program cannot overwrite another’s data. Technologies like virtual memory use part of the hard disk as extra RAM when physical memory is full.

4. User Interfaces |

The user interface is the part of the OS that allows the user to give commands and receive feedback. There are two main types you need to know:

A Graphical User Interface (GUI) uses windows, icons, menus, and pointers (WIMP). It is intuitive and easy for most users because they can interact visually, often using a mouse or touch.

A Command-Line Interface (CLI) requires the user to type specific commands. It uses fewer system resources and can be faster for expert users performing repetitive tasks, but it is harder to learn.

Some systems also use a menu-driven or natural language interface, but GUI and CLI are the primary focus for the examination.

5. Multitasking and Process Management |

Multitasking allows a single-user system to run several applications at the same time. The OS manages this by creating a separate process for each running program.

Each process has its own state, and the OS must switch context – saving the state of the current process and loading the state of the next one – very quickly. This context switching happens so rapidly that users think everything is happening simultaneously.

In multi-user systems (like a server), the OS also handles concurrent access for different users, ensuring fair sharing of resources.

6. Memory Management |

The OS is responsible for controlling how memory (RAM) is used. When a program is loaded, the OS finds a free block of memory large enough to hold it. When the program closes, that memory is freed.

Key techniques include partitioning and paging. Paging divides memory into fixed-size blocks and allows programs to be stored in non-contiguous locations, which reduces fragmentation.

If RAM runs out, the OS can use virtual memory. It temporarily moves data from RAM to a section of the hard disk called the page file or swap space. However, excessive use of virtual memory slows down the system because disk access is much slower than RAM.

7. File Management |

The OS organises data into a hierarchical structure of folders (directories) and files. It keeps track of where each file is physically stored on the disk using a file allocation table (FAT) or similar indexing system.

Common operations include creating, deleting, copying, moving, and renaming files. The OS also controls access permissions, so users can share files or keep them private.

Fragmentation occurs when files are saved in scattered blocks. The OS may include a defragmentation utility to rearrange data and improve disk speed, which is essential knowledge for your course.

8. Peripheral Management |

Input and output devices – such as keyboards, mice, printers, and monitors – are controlled by the OS through device drivers. A device driver is a small piece of software that acts as a translator between the OS and the hardware.

When a peripheral is connected, the OS automatically detects it (plug and play) and loads the appropriate driver. It then manages data transfer, handles interrupts, and reports errors when a device is not working correctly.

Without an OS, every application would need its own driver for every device, which would be unworkable. The OS provides a uniform interface for all programs.

9. Security and User Accounts |

The OS enforces security by requiring user accounts with passwords. Each account is assigned a set of access rights that determine which files and settings the user can modify.

Administrator accounts have full control over the system, while standard user accounts have limited permissions. This separation prevents accidental or malicious damage to critical system files.

The OS also includes a firewall, encryption tools, and automatic update mechanisms to protect against malware and network attacks. Anti-virus software is not part of the OS but works closely with it.

10. Utility Software |

Utility software is system software designed to help analyse, configure, optimise, or maintain a computer. These programs are often supplied with the OS but are not part of the kernel itself.

Disk Defragmenter | 磁盘碎片整理程序 Reorganises scattered file fragments to improve read speed.
Creates copies of data to restore in case of failure.
Prepares a storage device for use by erasing all data and setting up a file system.
Reduce file size for storage or transmission.
Monitors running processes and system performance, allows forced closing of unresponsive programs.

Students should be able to recognise these utilities and explain their purpose, especially disk defragmentation which appears frequently in exam questions.

11. Types of Operating Systems |

Not all operating systems are the same. They vary according to the device and the number of simultaneous users. The AQA specification expects you to understand the following categories:

  • Single-user, single-task: only one person can use the machine and one program runs at a time. Found in very simple embedded devices.
  • Single-user, multi-task: the most common type for personal computers, where one user runs several applications at once.
  • Multi-user: multiple users access the computer’s resources at the same time, typical on servers and mainframes. The OS must handle concurrent processing and security.

Real-time operating systems (RTOS) are used in applications that require instant responses, such as airbag systems or medical devices. They are not a major focus in the core IGCSE but may appear in extension material.

12. Exam Tips and Common Pitfalls |

When answering exam questions about operating systems, always be precise with terminology. Avoid vague statements like “it manages the computer” – specify what it manages and how.

Do not confuse the operating system with application software. The OS is system software that runs the computer; applications are programs that perform specific tasks for the user, like word processors or web browsers.

A common error is claiming that defragmentation frees up disk space. It does not; it simply rearranges existing data so that files are contiguous, which speeds up access.

Ensure you can give examples of different user interfaces and discuss their relative advantages. Use correct technical vocabulary like CLI, GUI, WIMP, scheduling, context switch, virtual memory, and fragmentation.

Finally, remember that security is a function of the OS itself, but many protective actions require additional utility software like anti-malware tools. Be clear about this distinction in your answers.
