1. Understanding the Command Words | 理解指令词

Every essay question begins with a command word – ‘describe’, ‘explain’, ‘compare’, ‘evaluate’. Identify it immediately. ‘Describe’ asks for factual details of a process, observation, or trend, with no need for reasoning. ‘Explain’ demands scientific reasons, linking cause and effect using chemical principles. ‘Compare’ requires similarities and differences, usually in a structured format. ‘Evaluate’ expects you to weigh up advantages and disadvantages and reach a justified conclusion.

每道 essay 题目都以一个指令词开始——例如 ‘describe’、’explain’、’compare’、’evaluate’。立刻识别它。’Describe’ 要求给出过程、观察或趋势的事实细节,不需要解释原因。’Explain’ 需要科学理由,利用化学原理将因果联系起来。’Compare’ 要求找出相同点和不同点,通常以结构化方式呈现。’Evaluate’ 则期望你权衡利弊,并得出有依据的结论。

  • Describe: ‘state the steps / observations’ – no ‘because’.
  • Describe: “陈述步骤 / 观察” – 不要用”因为”。
  • Explain: ‘this happens because…’ – link to particle theory, bonding, energy changes.
  • Explain: “发生这种情况是因为……” – 联系粒子理论、键合、能量变化。
  • Compare: ‘both… whereas…’ – use a table mentally.
  • Compare: “两者都……但是……” – 脑海中用表格。
  • Evaluate: ‘on one hand… on the other hand… therefore…’
  • Evaluate: “一方面……另一方面……因此……”

2. Planning Your Answer in 2 Minutes | 两分钟快速规划答案

Before writing a single sentence, sketch a quick outline. Jot down 3‑5 key points that directly answer the question. Number them in a logical sequence – chronological, spatial (from macro to particle), or by importance. This prevents rambling and ensures you cover all marking points. A simple plan might look like: (1) State the definition, (2) Describe the process with an example, (3) Explain the underlying principle using collisions or equilibrium, (4) Conclude with a real‑world application.

动手写任何一句之前,先快速列出提纲。草草记下 3–5 个直接回答问题的关键点。按逻辑顺序编号——时间顺序、空间顺序(从宏观到粒子)或重要性顺序。这样可以防止跑题,并确保覆盖所有得分点。一个简单的计划可能是:(1) 陈述定义,(2) 举例描述过程,(3) 利用碰撞或平衡解释基本原理,(4) 用现实应用总结。

Spend no more than 2 minutes planning. Use keywords only – e.g. ‘exothermic, bond making, temp rise, energy profile’. This keeps your brain focused on chemistry, not on English composition.

花不超过两分钟规划。只用关键词——例如 ‘exothermic, bond making, temp rise, energy profile’。这会让你的大脑专注于化学,而不是英语写作。

3. The Introduction: Setting the Scene | 引言:为答案搭好框架

Start with a concise definition or context sentence. If the question is about ‘rates of reaction’, begin: ‘The rate of a reaction is the change in concentration of a reactant or product per unit time. It can be affected by temperature, concentration, surface area, and catalysts.’ Such an opening shows the examiner you know the core concept and gives your answer direction. Never repeat the question – paraphrase it.

用一个简洁的定义或背景句开头。如果问题关于 ‘rates of reaction’,可以这样开始:”反应速率是单位时间内反应物或产物浓度的变化。它可以受温度、浓度、表面积和催化剂影响。” 这样的开头向考官表明你掌握了核心概念,并给答案指引了方向。不要重复问题——用自己的话转述。

For ‘explain’ questions, your introduction can state the principle you will use, e.g. ‘Collision theory states that for a reaction to occur, particles must collide with sufficient energy and correct orientation.’

对于 ‘explain’ 类问题,引言可以说明你将使用的原理,例如:”碰撞理论指出,要发生反应,粒子必须以足够的能量和正确的方向碰撞。”

4. Describing a Process or Experiment | 描述一个过程或实验

When describing a practical procedure, follow the natural order of the experiment: apparatus → chemicals → steps → observations → result. Use the passive voice: ‘A known mass of magnesium ribbon was added to excess dilute hydrochloric acid. The volume of hydrogen gas produced was measured every 30 seconds using a gas syringe.’ Be specific with quantities, concentrations, and apparatus names.

描述实验操作时,按照实验的自然顺序:仪器 → 化学品 → 步骤 → 观察 → 结果。使用被动语态:”将已知质量的镁条加入过量的稀盐酸中。用气体注射器每隔 30 秒测量产生的氢气体积。” 对数量、浓度和仪器名称要具体。

List observations as bullet points in your mind, and write them as a flowing sentence: ‘Effervescence was observed, the magnesium dissolved, and a colorless gas evolved that gave a ‘pop’ with a lighted splint.’ Always link an observation to the chemical identity.

观察可以像脑海中的要点一样列出,但写成流畅的句子:”观察到冒泡,镁溶解,放出无色气体,该气体遇点燃的木条发出爆鸣声。” 始终将观察与物质化学特性相联系。

5. Explaining with Particle Theory and Bonding | 利用粒子理论与键合进行解释

This is the heart of IGCSE Chemistry essays. Whenever you explain, anchor your reasoning in particle arrangement, movement, and bonding. For changes of state: ‘In melting, particles gain kinetic energy, overcome some of the attractive forces, and move from fixed positions to a more disordered liquid arrangement.’ For electrical conductivity: ‘Graphite conducts electricity because each carbon atom uses only three of its four outer electrons for covalent bonding, leaving one delocalised electron per atom that can move freely and carry charge.’

这是 IGCSE 化学 essay 的核心。无论解释什么,都要将推理植根于粒子的排列、运动和键合。对于状态变化:”在熔化过程中,粒子获得动能,克服部分吸引力,从固定位置移动到更无序的液体排列。” 对于导电性:”石墨可以导电,因为每个碳原子只用了四个外层电子中的三个来形成共价键,剩下一个离域电子可以自由移动并携带电荷。”

Use precise terms: delocalised electrons, intermolecular forces, lattice, ions, shared pairs, electrostatic attraction. Don’t say ‘bonds break’ when you mean ‘intermolecular forces are overcome’ – this mistake costs marks.

使用准确术语:离域电子、分子间作用力、晶格、离子、共用电子对、静电吸引。如果你是想说”分子间作用力被克服”,就不要说”键断裂”——这种错误会丢分。

6. Comparing and Contrasting Effectively | 有效进行对比

When asked to compare, always address both similarities and differences, even if the question seems to stress only differences. Structure your comparison point by point: ‘Both diamond and silicon dioxide have a giant covalent structure. However, diamond is an element made only of carbon atoms, while silicon dioxide is a compound containing silicon and oxygen atoms.’ Use comparison vocabulary: similarly, in contrast, whereas, both share, differs from.

要求比较时,一定要同时写出相同点和不同点,即使问题似乎只强调差异。逐点组织你的对比:”金刚石和二氧化硅都具有巨型共价结构。不过,金刚石是只由碳原子组成的单质,而二氧化硅是含有硅和氧原子的化合物。” 使用对比词汇:similarly, in contrast, whereas, both share, differs from。

A mark‑winning technique is to use a table in your answer booklet – a simple two‑column format highlighting property, substance A, substance B. This is visually clear and guarantees you cover several aspects.

一个得分技巧是在答题本上使用表格——简单的两列格式,突出性质、物质 A、物质 B。这样视觉上很清晰,能确保你涵盖多个方面。

7. Using Equations and Calculations | 使用方程式与计算

Include relevant chemical equations, even if the question doesn’t explicitly ask for them. They demonstrate deeper understanding. For a rates question, write: 2HCl(aq) + Mg(s) → MgCl₂(aq) + H₂(g). Then show the mole ratio: 2 mol HCl reacts with 1 mol Mg. If calculating an enthalpy change, present the formula: Q = mcΔT, followed by ΔH = –Q/n.

即使题目没有明确要求,也要写出相关的化学方程式。这能展示更深层次的理解。对于速率问题,写出:2HCl(aq) + Mg(s) → MgCl₂(aq) + H₂(g)。然后展示摩尔比:2 mol HCl 与 1 mol Mg 反应。如果计算焓变,呈现公式:Q = mcΔT,然后 ΔH = –Q/n。

All calculations must be laid out step‑by‑step: formula, substitution, answer, units, significant figures. Label each step. This makes it easy for the examiner to award consequential marks even if the final answer is wrong.

所有计算必须逐步列出:公式、代入、答案、单位、有效数字。标记每一步。这样即使最终答案错误,考官也能轻松给出过程分。

8. Incorporating Real‑World Applications | 融入实际应用

Essays that link chemical concepts to everyday life or industrial processes stand out. When discussing exothermic reactions, mention hand warmers or self‑heating cans. For the Haber process (manufacture of ammonia), explain the compromise conditions (450 °C, 200 atm, iron catalyst) in terms of rate and equilibrium. For electroplating, describe its use in jewellery or corrosion prevention.

将化学概念与日常生活或工业过程联系起来的文章会脱颖而出。讨论放热反应时,提及暖手宝或自热罐。对于哈伯法(制氨),从速率和平衡角度解释妥协条件(450 °C、200 atm、铁催化剂)。对于电镀,描述其在珠宝或防腐蚀方面的应用。

This shows you can apply knowledge, not just recall it. Keep examples concise but chemically accurate: ‘Sulfur dioxide, used as a food preservative, also contributes to acid rain when oxidised to sulfuric acid in the atmosphere.’

这表明你能应用知识,而不仅仅是回忆。例子要简洁但化学上准确:”二氧化硫用作食品防腐剂,但在大气中被氧化成硫酸后也会导致酸雨。”

9. Avoiding Common Pitfalls | 避免常见失分点

One major pitfall is mixing ‘atoms’ and ‘ions’. Sodium chloride contains Na⁺ and Cl⁻ ions, not atoms. Another is confusing intermolecular forces with covalent bonds; for instance, when iodine sublimes, the weak van der Waals’ forces between I₂ molecules are overcome, not the covalent I–I bond. Also, never say ‘carbon dioxide is acidic because it contains carbon’ – the correct explanation involves its reaction with water to form carbonic acid.

一个主要误区是混淆”原子”和”离子”。氯化钠中含有 Na⁺ 和 Cl⁻ 离子,而不是原子。另一个是混淆分子间作用力和共价键;例如,碘升华时,克服的是 I₂ 分子之间弱的范德华力,而不是 I–I 共价键。另外,不要说”二氧化碳是酸性的因为它含碳”——正确的解释涉及它与水反应形成碳酸。

Avoid vague language like ‘it speeds up the reaction’ without specifying which factor and how. Be precise: ‘The catalyst provides an alternative reaction pathway with a lower activation energy, so a greater proportion of collisions have sufficient energy to react.’

避免模糊的语言,比如”它加快了反应”,却没有说明是哪个因素以及如何加快。要精确:”催化剂提供了一条活化能较低的反应途径,因此有更大比例的碰撞具有足够能量发生反应。”

10. Time‑Saving Templates for Common Question Types | 常见题型的省时模板

Here are ready‑made structures you can adapt in the exam:

以下是你可以在考试中直接套用的结构:

Question Type 题型 Template 模板
Describe how to investigate the effect of concentration on reaction rate 描述如何研究浓度对反应速率的影响 Diagram reference → Independent variable (concentration) → Dependent variable (time for cross to disappear) → Control variables (temperature, volume) → Method steps → Record results → Plot graph (1/time vs concentration) → Conclusion: higher concentration gives faster rate because more particles per unit volume → more frequent successful collisions.
Explain why aluminium oxide has a high melting point 解释为什么氧化铝熔点很高 Ionic compound → Giant ionic lattice → Strong electrostatic attraction between Al³⁺ and O²⁻ ions → Large amount of energy required to overcome these forces → Therefore high melting point.
Compare graphite and diamond 比较石墨和金刚石 Similarities: giant covalent structures, high melting points, each carbon bonded covalently. Differences: diamond – 4 bonds per C, tetrahedral, hard, insulator; graphite – 3 bonds per C, layers, soft, slippery, conductor (delocalised electrons).
Evaluate the use of hydrogen fuel cells vs petrol engines 评估氢燃料电池与汽油发动机 Advantages of H₂: only product water, no CO₂, higher efficiency. Disadvantages: storage, production requires energy, infrastructure. Petrol: established, energy dense but produces CO₂, NOₓ. Conclusion: H₂ cells are more sustainable long‑term, but challenges remain.

11. Language and Terminology Precision | 语言与术语的精确性

Examiners look for correct scientific vocabulary. Use ‘collision frequency’ instead of ‘particles hit more’, ‘activation energy’ instead of ‘energy needed to start’. For organic chemistry, name compounds systematically: ‘ethanoic acid’ not ‘acetic acid’. For environmental topics, say ‘carbon monoxide binds to haemoglobin, reducing oxygen transport’ rather than ‘it is poisonous’.

考官看重正确的科学词汇。使用 ‘collision frequency’ 代替 ‘particles hit more’,使用 ‘activation energy’ 代替 ‘energy needed to start’。对于有机化学,系统命名化合物:’ethanoic acid’ 而不是 ‘acetic acid’。对于环境话题,要说 ‘carbon monoxide binds to haemoglobin, reducing oxygen transport’,而不是 ‘it is poisonous’。

Spelling matters: sulfur (not sulphur), alkene (not alkane when C=C is discussed), delocalised (UK spelling). Practise writing definitions until they flow naturally without hesitation.

拼写很重要:sulfur(不是 sulphur),当讨论 C=C 时写 alkene(不是 alkane),delocalised(英式拼写)。练习书写定义直到你能不假思索地自然写出。

12. Polishing Your Answer and Self‑Checking | 打磨答案与自我检查

Reserve 3‑4 minutes at the end to re‑read your essay. Check you have hit every part of the question – each bullet point in a sub‑question must be addressed. Verify that your ‘explain’ answers include a causal link (because –> therefore). Ensure calculations have units and appropriate significant figures. Finally, scan for spelling mistakes in chemical names and key terms.

留出最后 3–4 分钟重读你的文章。检查你是否回答到了问题的每一部分——子问题中的每个要点都必须有所回应。确认你的 ‘explain’ 答案包含了因果联系(因为 –> 所以)。确保计算有单位和合适的有效数字。最后,快速扫描化学名称和关键术语的拼写错误。

If a question asks for two examples, give exactly two – extra incorrect ones may cancel a correct one if they contradict. Brevity with completeness is the goal.

如果题目要求两个例子,就只给两个——多余的错误例子如果与答案矛盾,可能会抵消正确的部分。简洁而完整是目标。
