📚 IGCSE Economics: High-Frequency Topics Summary | IGCSE

Mastering IGCSE Economics requires a firm grasp of the concepts that appear year after year on exam papers. This article summarises the most frequently tested topics, helping you focus your revision effectively. From the basic economic problem to macroeconomic policies, each section is broken down with clear explanations and essential formulas.

1. The Basic Economic Problem |

The fundamental economic problem is scarcity: unlimited wants but limited resources. This forces individuals, firms, and governments to make choices, each involving an opportunity cost.

Opportunity cost is the next best alternative forgone. For example, if a government spends more on healthcare, the opportunity cost might be less investment in education.

Three fundamental questions arise from scarcity: What to produce? How to produce? For whom to produce?

2. Demand and Supply |

Demand is the quantity of a good or service consumers are willing and able to buy at various prices, ceteris paribus. The law of demand states that as price rises, quantity demanded falls (inverse relationship).

Supply is the quantity producers are willing and able to sell at various prices. The law of supply indicates a direct relationship: as price rises, quantity supplied rises.

Market equilibrium occurs where demand equals supply. Changes in non-price determinants (e.g. income, tastes, production costs) shift the curves, leading to a new equilibrium price and quantity.

3. Price Elasticity of Demand (PED) |

PED measures the responsiveness of quantity demanded to a change in price.

PED = %Δ Quantity Demanded ÷ %Δ Price

PED = 需求量变动的百分比 ÷ 价格变动的百分比

If PED > 1, demand is price elastic (luxury goods, many substitutes). If PED < 1, demand is price inelastic (necessities, addictive goods). PED = 1 is unitary elastic. Knowledge of PED helps firms predict revenue changes after price adjustments.

Determinants include the availability of substitutes, degree of necessity, proportion of income spent, and time period.

4. Price Elasticity of Supply (PES) |

PES measures the responsiveness of quantity supplied to a change in price.

PES = %Δ Quantity Supplied ÷ %Δ Price

PES = 供给量变动的百分比 ÷ 价格变动的百分比

PES > 1 indicates elastic supply (e.g. manufactured goods with spare capacity). PES < 1 indicates inelastic supply (e.g. agricultural products in the short run). Key factors are production time, availability of stocks, and the ease of factor substitution.

5. Market Failure |

Market failure occurs when the free market leads to an inefficient allocation of resources. Common causes are externalities, public goods, and information gaps.

Negative externalities (e.g. pollution from a factory) impose costs on third parties not reflected in the market price. Positive externalities (e.g. vaccination) provide benefits to third parties.

Public goods are non-excludable and non-rival (e.g. street lighting), leading to the free-rider problem, so they are often under-provided by the market.

6. Government Intervention |

Governments intervene to correct market failures. Tools include taxation, subsidies, price controls, and regulation.

An indirect tax on a demerit good (e.g. cigarettes) raises the price, reducing consumption and internalising the externality. A subsidy on a merit good (e.g. education) lowers the price, encouraging consumption.

Maximum price (price ceiling) set below equilibrium creates a shortage; minimum price (price floor) set above equilibrium creates a surplus (e.g. minimum wage).

7. Production Possibility Curve (PPC) |

The PPC shows the maximum possible combinations of two goods an economy can produce with full employment of resources.

Points on the curve are efficient, inside are inefficient (unemployment), and outside are unattainable. Moving along the PPC illustrates opportunity cost. The curve is usually concave (bowed outward) due to increasing opportunity cost.

Economic growth shifts the PPC outward, caused by an increase in the quantity or quality of resources, or technological progress.

8. Macroeconomic Objectives |

Most governments pursue four main objectives: low and stable inflation, low unemployment, sustainable economic growth, and a satisfactory balance of payments.

Potential conflicts exist: for example, policies to boost growth may raise inflation; pursuing a trade surplus may restrict domestic consumption.

The circular flow of income model illustrates the links between households, firms, government, and the external sector. Leakages (saving, taxes, imports) and injections (investment, government spending, exports) determine the overall economic activity.

9. Inflation and Unemployment |

Inflation is a sustained rise in the general price level. It is measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI). Demand-pull inflation occurs when aggregate demand exceeds aggregate supply; cost-push inflation arises from rising production costs (e.g. wages, raw materials).

Unemployment refers to those actively seeking work but unable to find jobs. Types include cyclical (due to low demand), frictional (between jobs), structural (mismatch of skills), and seasonal.

The Phillips curve shows a possible short-run trade-off between inflation and unemployment: lower unemployment may come with higher inflation.

10. International Trade and Exchange Rates |

International trade allows countries to specialise based on comparative advantage, increasing global output. Protectionist measures (tariffs, quotas, subsidies to domestic firms) restrict trade.

Exchange rate is the price of one currency in terms of another. A weaker domestic currency makes exports cheaper and imports more expensive, potentially improving the trade balance.

Factors affecting exchange rates include interest rates, inflation differentials, and speculation. A depreciation can fuel imported inflation.

11. Fiscal and Monetary Policy |

Fiscal policy involves changes in government spending and taxation to influence aggregate demand. Expansionary fiscal policy (higher spending or tax cuts) boosts demand; contractionary policy reduces it to control inflation.

Monetary policy, managed by the central bank, adjusts interest rates or the money supply. Lower interest rates encourage borrowing and spending, while higher rates dampen demand.

Supply-side policies aim to increase the productive capacity of the economy, for example through education and training, lower business taxes, and deregulation.

12. Economic Growth |

Economic growth is an increase in an economy’s output over time, measured by the percentage change in real GDP. It can be driven by an increase in the quantity of factors (labour, capital) or improvements in their quality (productivity).

Benefits of growth include higher living standards and greater tax revenue. However, growth can also create negative externalities, such as pollution and resource depletion.

A sustainable growth path balances economic expansion with environmental protection, often requiring government intervention and green technology.
