📚 IGCSE Edexcel English: Reading Comprehension Exam Essentials | IGCSE Edexcel 英语:阅读理解 考点精讲

Reading comprehension in the IGCSE Edexcel English Language specification tests your ability to understand, interpret, and respond to unseen texts. Whether you are tackling Paper 1 (Non-fiction) or Paper 2 (Fiction and Imaginative Writing), the core skills remain the same: extracting key information, inferring meaning, analysing language, and evaluating a writer’s choices. This revision guide breaks down every essential exam skill, providing clear strategies, examples, and bilingual explanations to help you master the reading paper and boost your confidence.

IGCSE Edexcel 英语语言考试中的阅读理解部分,考查你对陌生文本的理解、解读和反应能力。无论你面对的是 Paper 1(非虚构类)还是 Paper 2(小说与创意写作),核心技能始终不变:提取关键信息、推断隐含意义、分析语言以及评估作者的写作手法。这份复习指南将逐一拆解每个必考的阅读技能,提供清晰的答题策略、实例和中英双语讲解,帮助你彻底攻克阅读卷,提升应试信心。

1. Understanding the Exam Structure | 理解考试结构

The Edexcel IGCSE English Language reading sections differ slightly between papers. Paper 1 (Non-fiction) contains one longer unseen non-fiction text or two thematically linked shorter texts, followed by a series of short-answer questions and a final extended response. Paper 2 (Fiction) presents an unseen literary extract with comprehension questions and analysis tasks. Knowing the types of questions asked – from ‘select and retrieve’ to ‘explain and analyse’ – will help you tailor your reading approach.

Edexcel IGCSE 英语语言考试的阅读部分在两张试卷上略有不同。Paper 1(非虚构类)包含一篇较长的非虚构类陌生文本或两篇主题相关的较短文本,之后是一系列简答题和一个最后的拓展回答题。Paper 2(小说类)则提供一篇文学类选段,并配有理解问题和分析任务。了解题目类型——从“查找与提取”到“解释与分析”——将帮助你调整阅读策略,精准备考。

In Paper 1, questions often move from basic information retrieval to analysis of language, structure, and writers’ techniques. In Paper 2, expect questions on atmosphere, character, and narrative voice. Both papers require you to use Point – Evidence – Explanation (PEE) in analytical answers, though the mark scheme also rewards synthesis and evaluation.

在 Paper 1 中,题目通常从基础的信息提取逐步过渡到对语言、结构和作者手法的分析。在 Paper 2 中,你会遇到关于氛围、人物和叙事声音的问题。两卷的答案都需要采用“观点 – 证据 – 解释” (PEE) 结构,而评分标准还会奖励综合归纳和评价能力的展现。

2. Skimming for the Big Picture | 略读把握全局

Skimming is a quick-reading strategy used to get the gist of a passage. Before looking at the questions, spend 1–2 minutes skimming the whole text: read the title, subheadings, first and last paragraphs, and the first sentence of each body paragraph. This gives you a mental map of the topic, tone, and structure, helping you locate information later without wasting time.

略读是一种快速阅读策略,用来抓住文章大意。在看题目之前,先花一到两分钟略读全文:读标题、副标题、首段和末段,以及每个正文段落的段首句。这能让你在脑海中形成文章主题、语气和结构的初步印象,帮助你稍后查找信息时不浪费时间。

When skimming, do not get stuck on unfamiliar vocabulary. Focus on content words – nouns, verbs, adjectives – and ignore function words. Your aim is to answer three questions silently: What is the text about? What is the writer’s perspective? How is the information organised?

略读时,不要在陌生词汇上纠结。把注意力放在内容词上——名词、动词、形容词——忽略功能词。你的目标是默默回答三个问题:文章是关于什么的?作者的观点是什么?信息是如何组织的?

3. Scanning for Specific Details | 扫读定位细节

Scanning is the technique you use when a question asks you to ‘find’ or ‘identify’ specific facts, figures, or phrases. Instead of reading every word, let your eyes dart across the page looking for keywords from the question – such as names, dates, numbers, or unusual terms. Once you spot a keyword, read the surrounding sentences carefully to extract the correct answer.

扫读是当题目要求你“找出”或“识别”某个具体事实、数据或短语时所使用的技巧。不必逐字阅读,而是让视线在页面上快速移动,寻找题目中的关键词——比如人名、日期、数字或特殊术语。一旦发现关键词,再仔细阅读前后句子,提取正确答案。

A classic scanning question might ask: “What percentage of teenagers surveyed felt anxious about exams?” Your eyes would scan for ‘%’, ‘teenagers’, ‘anxious’, ‘exams’, and once located, you would read the full sentence to avoid being tricked by distractors. Always double-check that the detail you have found matches the question’s scope precisely.

一个典型的扫读题目可能会问:“接受调查的青少年中,有百分之多少对考试感到焦虑?”你的眼睛会扫描 ‘%’、’teenagers’、’anxious’、’exams’ 等关键词,一旦定位,就完整阅读那个句子,以免被干扰信息迷惑。务必再次核对,你找到的细节在范围上与题目要求完全一致。

4. Identifying the Main Idea and Supporting Details | 识别主旨与支撑细节

Many questions ask you to summarise or state the main idea of a paragraph or the whole text. The main idea is the central point the writer wants to convey about a topic. It is often found in the topic sentence – usually the first or second sentence of a paragraph – but sometimes must be inferred from the evidence given. Supporting details are examples, statistics, anecdotes, or explanations that reinforce the main idea.

许多题目会要求你总结或陈述某一段落或全文的主旨。主旨是作者就某一话题想要传达的核心观点。它通常出现在主题句中——一般是段落的第一或第二句——但有时也需要从给出的证据中推断出来。支撑细节则是用来强化主旨的例子、统计数据、轶事或解释。

To identify the main idea, ask yourself: “If I had to tell someone what this paragraph is about in one sentence, what would I say?” Then list the supporting details that back up that sentence. In the exam, avoid copying a whole chunk of text; instead, paraphrase the main idea concisely in your own words while quoting short, relevant phrases as evidence.

要识别主旨,可以问自己:“如果让我用一句话告诉别人这一段讲了什么,我会怎么说?”然后列出支撑这句话的细节。考试中,避免大段抄录原文;应简明扼要地用自己的话转述主旨,同时引用简短的、相关的短语作为证据。

5. Making Inferences and Reading Between the Lines | 推断与读懂言外之意

Inference questions go beyond what is explicitly stated and ask you to deduce ideas, attitudes, or implications. The writer does not directly tell you that a character is angry; instead, you might read, “His jaw tightened and he refused to meet my eyes.” From this, you infer suppressed anger. Inference requires combining textual clues with your own knowledge of the world.

推断类题目超越了字面信息,要求你推导出观点、态度或隐含意义。作者不会直接告诉你某个角色生气了;相反,你可能读到,“他的下颌绷紧,拒绝与我对视。”由此,你推断出他在压抑怒火。推断需要将文本线索与你对世界的认知结合起来。

A reliable method is the Clue + Knowledge = Inference formula. For example, if a non-fiction text describes “exhausted commuters shuffling past uncollected rubbish bags,” your world knowledge tells you that tired people and piled-up rubbish suggest neglect and low morale; your inference could be that the writer is critical of the city’s declining civic pride.

一个可靠的方法是线索 + 常识 = 推断公式。例如,如果一篇非虚构文章描述了“疲惫的通勤者从无人清理的垃圾袋旁拖着脚步走过”,你的常识告诉你,疲惫的人群和堆积的垃圾意味着疏于管理和士气低落;你的推断可以是:作者在批评这座城市公民自豪感的衰落。

6. Understanding Vocabulary in Context | 理解语境中的词汇含义

When you encounter an unfamiliar word, do not panic. Examiners deliberately include challenging vocabulary to see if you can use context clues to figure out meaning. Look at the words and sentences immediately before and after the unknown term. Definitions, contrasts, synonyms, and examples often surround the difficult word. A sentence like “She was scrupulous about hygiene, washing her hands many times a day” gives a clear clue through the example.

当遇到不熟悉的词汇时,不要慌张。考官故意插入有难度的词汇,是为了检验你能否利用语境线索推测词义。查看生词前后紧邻的词语和句子。定义、对比、同义词和例子常常出现在难词周围。像 “She was scrupulous about hygiene, washing her hands many times a day” 这样的句子,就通过例子提供了清晰的线索。

Furthermore, break down the word itself into roots, prefixes, and suffixes. For instance, ‘incredulous’ contains ‘in-‘ (not) and ‘cred’ (believe), meaning unwilling to believe. If you still cannot guess the exact meaning, determine its broad sense – positive, negative, or neutral – and think about what the writer is trying to convey, which is often enough to answer the question.

此外,还可以将单词拆分为词根、前缀和后缀。例如,‘incredulous’ 包含 ‘in-’(不)和‘cred’(相信),意为不愿相信的。如果仍然猜不出确切意思,就判断它的广义色彩——积极、消极或中性——并思考作者试图表达什么,这通常足以回答问题。

7. Analysing Language Techniques | 分析语言技巧

Analysis questions ask you to explore how a writer uses language to achieve a particular effect on the reader. You must name the technique (e.g., simile, metaphor, personification, rhetorical question, alliteration), quote the exact words, and explain the effect. A strong analysis answers: “The writer uses [technique] in ‘…’ to suggest…, making the reader feel/think/imagine…” Always link the effect back to the writer’s overall purpose.

分析题要求你探讨作者如何运用语言对读者产生特定效果。你需要指认技巧名称(如明喻、暗喻、拟人、反问、头韵),引用原文原词,并解释其效果。一段出色的分析会解答:“作者在‘……’中使用了[技巧],暗示……,让读者感受到/联想到/想象到……”始终要将效果与作者的整体目的联系起来。

Consider this example: “The sun peered cautiously over the mountain.” The writer uses personification – ‘peered cautiously’ – to make the sunrise feel timid and hesitant, as if the day itself is reluctant to begin, which might mirror a character’s sense of dread. Avoid vague phrases like “it paints a picture in the reader’s mind”; instead, be precise about the image and its emotional tone.

看这个例子:“太阳小心翼翼地窥视着山顶。”作者使用了拟人手法——“小心翼翼地窥视”——使日出显得羞怯而迟疑,仿佛白天本身都不愿登场,这可能映射了某个角色的恐惧感。避免使用诸如“它在读者脑海中描绘了一幅画面”之类的模糊表述;相反,要精确描述画面及其情感基调。

8. Examining Structural Choices | 考察结构选择

Structure is the skeleton of a text – the way ideas are ordered and connected. Exam questions may ask you to comment on how a writer opens and closes a passage, the function of a specific paragraph, or shifts in focus, pace, or perspective. Look for contrasts (e.g., from calm to chaos), repetition, flashbacks, or the way a text builds tension through short, punchy sentences after a long descriptive passage.

结构是文本的骨架——即观点被安排和连接的方式。考题可能会要求你评论作者如何开篇和结尾、某个特定段落的功能,或者关注焦点、节奏或视角的转换。留意对比(例如从平静到混乱)、重复、倒叙,或文本如何通过紧跟在长篇描写后的短促有力的句子来营造紧张感。

A useful technique is to map out the ’emotional journey’ of a passage. For instance, a fiction extract might begin with a character’s isolation, move to a gripping encounter, and end on a note of suspense or revelation. Explain how each structural phase builds your understanding or engagement. To earn top marks, discuss the effect on the reader at each turning point.

一个实用的技巧是勾勒出选段的“情感旅程”。例如,一篇小说节选可能以角色的孤独感开始,过渡到一次扣人心弦的相遇,最后以悬念或揭晓收尾。解释每个结构阶段如何加深你的理解或代入感。要获得高分,需要在每个转折点讨论对读者产生的效果。

9. Evaluating Writers’ Purposes and Perspectives | 评价作者目的与观点

Higher-tariff questions (usually the final 12–15 mark question in Paper 1) require you to evaluate what the writer’s purpose is and how successfully they achieve it. Purpose could be to inform, persuade, entertain, shock, or warn. You must weigh up evidence from across the text, discussing not only what the writer does but also how convincing, moving, or effective it is, and offering your own critical response.

高分值题目(通常是 Paper 1 最后的 12–15 分题)要求你评价作者的目的是什么,以及他们如何成功地实现了该目的。目的可能是告知、劝说、娱乐、震撼或警告。你必须综合全文的证据,不仅要讨论作者做了什么,还要讨论其做法具有多少说服力、感染力或效果如何,并给出自己的批判性回应。

Use evaluative phrases such as “X is particularly effective because…”, “The writer skilfully builds…”, “However, the argument is weakened by…”, and “On balance, the text achieves its purpose by…”. Avoid simply listing techniques; instead, construct an argument about what the text means and how powerfully it communicates that meaning.

使用评价性短语,如“X 尤其有效,因为……”、“作者巧妙地构建了……”、“然而,该论点由于……而被削弱”,以及“总体而言,文本通过……实现了它的目的”。避免只是列举技巧;相反,要构建一个关于文本含义及其传达力度的论证。

10. Using Quotations Effectively | 有效使用引文

Selecting the right quotation is a skill in itself. The best quotations are short but rich in meaning – a phrase that contains a technique or a striking word choice, not a whole sentence you copy out lazily. Embed quotations smoothly into your own sentences. For example: The writer portrays the city as lifeless, describing its streets as ‘veins without blood’. This keeps your writing fluent and analytical.

选择合适的引文本身是一项技能。最好的引文短小精悍但含义丰富——一个包含了技巧或引人注目用词的短语,而不是慵懒地整句照抄。将引文流畅地嵌入自己的句子中。例如:作者将城市描绘得毫无生气,形容其街道为“没有血液的静脉”。这能保持你文笔的流畅性和分析性。

When you quote, always offer some commentary afterwards – never let a quote stand alone. Use the ‘quote – technique – effect’ pattern repeatedly but vary your language to avoid repetition. You might also use ellipsis (…) to cut irrelevant parts and keep the focus tight. The marker wants to see that you can extract and dissect the most powerful parts of a text.

引用时,之后总要给予一些评论——切勿让引文孤零零地站在那里。反复使用“引文 – 技巧 – 效果”的模式,但要变换措辞,避免重复。也可以使用省略号(…)删去不相关部分,保持焦点集中。阅卷人希望看到你能提取并剖析文本中最有力的部分。

11. Answering Comparison Questions | 回答比较类问题

In Paper 1, you may be asked to compare two short non-fiction texts. A comparison is not a summary of each text separately; you must find similarities and differences in viewpoints, language, structure, and tone. Use connectives like ‘whereas’, ‘similarly’, ‘in contrast’, and ‘both texts…’. The most successful responses move back and forth between the texts, analysing one point at a time.

在 Paper 1 中,你可能会被要求比较两篇短的非虚构类文本。比较不是分别总结每篇文章;你必须找出二者在观点、语言、结构和语气上的异同。使用“然而”、“类似地”、“相比之下”、“两篇文章都……”等连接词。最成功的答案会来回穿梭于两篇文章之间,逐点分析。

Plan a comparison by drawing a quick Venn diagram or a two-column table in your plan. Decide on 2–3 key areas of comparison: for example, the writers’ attitudes to technology, their use of personal anecdotes, or their different tones (one formal, one conversational). Always support each point with evidence from both texts to show balanced analysis.

在计划阶段,可以快速画一个韦恩图或一个两栏表格。选定 2–3 个关键比较领域:例如,作者对科技的态度、个人轶事的运用,或不同的语气(一个正式、一个口语化)。每个观点都要用来自两篇文章的证据支撑,以显示平衡的分析。

12. Time Management and Exam Day Tips | 时间管理与应试策略

Reading time is writing time. Use the first 10 minutes to read the text(s) carefully with the questions in mind, but do not skip the reading stage; a rushed understanding leads to shallow answers. Allocate your time based on marks: a 4-mark question deserves about 5 minutes, a 12-mark question about 15–18 minutes. Leave 2–3 minutes at the end to check spelling, punctuation, and evidence accuracy.

阅读时间就是写作时间。前 10 分钟要带着问题仔细阅读文本,但不要跳过阅读阶段;匆忙的理解只会导致肤浅的答案。根据分值分配时间:一道 4 分的题目大约用 5 分钟,一道 12 分的题目用 15–18 分钟。最后留出 2–3 分钟检查拼写、标点和引文的准确性。

Answer the easiest questions first to secure marks quickly and build confidence. Highlight key words in the question stem (e.g., ‘how’, ‘explain’, ‘evaluate’) to ensure you fulfil the command word. If you get stuck on a question, mark it and move on; you can always return later. And remember: quality over quantity – a handful of well-developed, evidence-rich paragraphs score far higher than pages of vague retelling.

先回答最简单的题目,快速锁定分数并建立信心。在题干中圈出关键词(如“如何”、“解释”、“评价”)以确保你准确呼应指令词。如果在一道题上卡住了,标记后继续往下做;稍后还能回来。记住:质量胜于数量——几个展开充分、证据丰富的段落,比好几页模糊的复述得分高得多。
