📚 IGCSE Edexcel Science: Concept Clarifications | IGCSE Edexcel

In IGCSE Edexcel Science, students often encounter concepts that appear similar but carry distinct scientific meanings. Clarifying these differences is essential for accurate answers in exams and for building a solid understanding of Physics, Chemistry and Biology. This article unpacks ten common pairs of easily confused terms, explaining each with clarity and exam relevance.

1. Mass vs. Weight |

Mass is the quantity of matter in an object, a scalar quantity measured in kilograms (kg). It remains constant regardless of the object’s location.

Weight is the gravitational force acting on an object, a vector quantity measured in newtons (N). It depends on the gravitational field strength (g).

Weight = mass × gravitational field strength (W = m g)

On Earth, g ≈ 10 N/kg, so an object’s weight is roughly ten times its mass number, while on the Moon g ≈ 1.6 N/kg, reducing weight but not mass.

2. Speed vs. Velocity |

Speed is the rate at which an object covers distance, a scalar quantity given by distance ÷ time.

Velocity is the rate of change of displacement, a vector quantity that includes direction. Average velocity = displacement ÷ time.

Speed = distance / time ; Velocity = displacement / time

A car driving 100 m north in 5 s has a speed of 20 m/s and a velocity of 20 m/s north. If it returns to the start, the average velocity is zero, but the speed is not.

3. Atoms vs. Molecules |

An atom is the smallest part of an element that retains its chemical properties, consisting of protons, neutrons and electrons.

A molecule is a group of two or more atoms chemically bonded together. The atoms can be from the same element (e.g. O₂) or different elements (e.g. H₂O).

All compounds are molecules, but not all molecules are compounds. O₂ is a molecule but not a compound because it contains only one type of element.

4. Elements vs. Compounds |

An element is a pure substance made of only one type of atom. It cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means. Examples: carbon (C), iron (Fe).

A compound is a substance formed when two or more different elements are chemically joined in fixed proportions. Compounds can be separated into elements only by chemical reactions. Example: water (H₂O).

Mixtures, unlike compounds, contain substances not chemically combined and can be separated by physical techniques such as filtration or distillation.

5. Breathing vs. Respiration |

Breathing (ventilation) is the physical process of moving air into and out of the lungs, involving inhalation and exhalation. It is a mechanical action.

Respiration is a chemical process that occurs in cells to release energy from glucose. It can be aerobic (using oxygen) or anaerobic (without oxygen).

Aerobic respiration: C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ → 6CO₂ + 6H₂O (+ energy)

Breathing supplies the oxygen needed for respiration and removes the carbon dioxide produced. They are linked but distinct processes.

6. Photosynthesis vs. Respiration |

Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants use light energy to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose and oxygen. It occurs in chloroplasts and requires chlorophyll.

6CO₂ + 6H₂O → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ (light energy)

6CO₂ + 6H₂O → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂(光能)

Respiration (in plants and animals) breaks down glucose to release energy for life processes. Photosynthesis stores energy as glucose; respiration releases that stored energy.

Photosynthesis only occurs in light, while respiration occurs continuously. The two processes are complementary in the carbon cycle.

7. Exothermic vs. Endothermic Reactions |

An exothermic reaction transfers energy from the reacting chemicals to the surroundings, usually as heat. The temperature of the surroundings increases. Examples: combustion, neutralisation.

An endothermic reaction takes in energy from the surroundings, causing a temperature drop. Examples: thermal decomposition, photosynthesis.

Exothermic: reactants → products + energy

Endothermic: reactants + energy → products

In energy-level diagrams, exothermic reactions show products at a lower energy than reactants, while endothermic reactions show the opposite.

8. Current vs. Voltage |

Electric current (I) is the rate of flow of electric charge, measured in amperes (A). In circuits, conventional current flows from positive to negative.

Voltage (potential difference, V) is the energy transferred per unit charge between two points, measured in volts (V). It drives the current through a component.

Voltage = work done / charge (V = W / Q)

Current is the flow of charge; voltage is the ‘push’ that makes charge flow. A higher voltage generally produces a higher current if resistance is constant (Ohm’s law: V = I R).

9. Diffusion vs. Osmosis |

Diffusion is the net movement of particles from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration, down a concentration gradient. It is a passive process requiring no energy.

Osmosis is a special type of diffusion involving water molecules across a partially permeable membrane, from a dilute solution to a more concentrated solution.

Diffusion applies to any small molecules (e.g. oxygen, glucose) in liquids and gases, while osmosis specifically refers to the movement of water through a membrane.

Both processes are vital in living organisms, for example gas exchange in lungs (diffusion) and water uptake in plant roots (osmosis).

10. Renewable vs. Non-renewable Energy Resources |

Renewable energy resources are those that can be replenished naturally at a rate comparable to their consumption. Examples: solar, wind, hydroelectric, tidal, geothermal, biomass.

Non-renewable resources exist in finite amounts and will eventually run out. They include fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas) and nuclear fuels (uranium).

Renewable sources generally produce less pollution and are more sustainable, but some are intermittent. Non-renewable sources provide reliable, concentrated energy but release CO₂ and other pollutants.

Edexcel assessments often ask students to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of each type for a given context, including environmental and economic factors.
