1. The Purpose and Nature of Business |

Needs, Wants and Scarcity: A need is something essential for survival, such as food, water and shelter. A want is a desire that is not necessary for survival, like a smartphone. Because resources are limited but wants are unlimited, scarcity exists. Businesses combine factors of production (land, labour, capital, enterprise) to produce goods and services that satisfy needs and wants.

Goods and Services: Goods are tangible items, either consumer goods (e.g. clothing) or capital goods (e.g. machinery). Services are intangible activities performed for customers (e.g. haircuts, banking).

Added Value: Added value is the difference between the selling price and the cost of materials. A business can increase added value by reducing input costs, increasing the selling price, or improving the product’s design and quality.

2. Forms of Business Organisation |

Sole Trader: A business owned and run by one person. The owner has unlimited liability, meaning personal assets are at risk if the business fails. Advantages include easy set‑up and full control. A disadvantage is the difficulty in raising capital.

Partnership: Owned by 2 to 20 partners who share profits and responsibilities. A deed of partnership is often used. Partners usually have unlimited liability, though some can be ‘sleeping’ partners. The main advantage is more capital and shared expertise; the main disadvantage is the risk of disputes and unlimited liability.

Private Limited Company (Ltd): Shares cannot be sold to the public. Shareholders have limited liability, protecting personal wealth. The company has a separate legal identity. It must publish financial accounts and is run by directors.

Public Limited Company (Plc): Can sell shares on the stock exchange to raise large amounts of capital. There is a risk of takeover. It is subject to more regulation and must disclose detailed accounts.

3. Business Objectives and Stakeholder Objectives |

Common Business Objectives: Profit maximisation, growth, increasing market share, survival, providing a social service (in social enterprises). Objectives may change over time depending on the business environment and stage of development.

Stakeholders: Stakeholders are individuals or groups who have an interest in a business. Internal stakeholders include owners and employees. External stakeholders include customers, suppliers, the government, the local community and pressure groups. Their objectives can conflict: workers want higher wages, while shareholders want higher dividends; customers want low prices, whereas owners want high profits.

4. Marketing: Research and the Marketing Mix |

Market Research: Primary research collects first‑hand data (e.g. questionnaires, interviews, observations). It is up‑to‑date but can be expensive. Secondary research uses existing data (e.g. internet, government reports). It is cheaper and quicker but may be out‑of‑date. Both help a business identify customer needs and make informed decisions.

Market Segmentation: Markets can be divided by demographic, geographic, psychographic and behavioural factors. Segmentation allows businesses to target specific groups more effectively.

The Marketing Mix (4Ps):

  • Product – design, features, brand, packaging. /
  • Price – cost‑plus, penetration, skimming, competitive pricing. /
  • Place – distribution channels, retailers, online sales. /
  • Promotion – advertising, sales promotions, public relations, social media. /

5. Operations and Production |

Methods of Production: Job production makes one‑off items (high quality, flexible, high cost). Batch production makes groups of identical products (moderate cost and flexibility). Flow production involves continuous mass production (low unit cost, efficient, but inflexible). The choice depends on demand, the product and available technology.

Economies and Diseconomies of Scale: As a business grows, average costs may fall due to purchasing, marketing, technical and financial economies. However, beyond a point, diseconomies can occur—poor communication, low morale, coordination problems—causing average costs to rise.

6. Financial Information: Cash Flow and Profit |

Cash Flow: Cash inflow is money received (sales, investments). Cash outflow is money paid (raw materials, wages, rent). A cash flow forecast predicts future flows and helps identify liquidity problems. A negative closing balance risks insolvency. Solutions include delaying outflows, chasing debtors and arranging an overdraft.

Profit and Loss: Profit is the reward for risk‑taking. Gross profit = revenue minus cost of sales. Net profit = gross profit minus expenses. Profit can be reinvested or distributed. A business can survive without profit for a while, but cannot survive without cash.

7. Break‑Even and Cost–Volume–Profit Analysis |

Break‑Even Point: The level of output where total revenue equals total costs, so the business makes neither profit nor loss. The formula is:

Break‑Even Output = Fixed Costs ÷ (Selling Price per Unit – Variable Cost per Unit)

Margin of Safety: Actual output minus break‑even output. It shows how far sales can fall before a loss occurs. A high margin of safety reduces risk.

Limitations: Break‑even assumes all output is sold and costs are linear, which may not always be true. It is best used as a planning tool alongside other methods.

8. Sources of Finance |

Internal Sources: Retained profit (reinvested net profit), sale of assets, reducing stock levels. These do not increase debt and are quick to arrange but may be limited.

External Sources: Short‑term – overdraft (flexible, interest charged on amount used), trade credit. Long‑term – bank loans (repayment with interest), share issue (only for limited companies), venture capital, grants and crowdfunding. The choice depends on cost, control and risk.

9. Human Resources |

Recruitment and Selection: The process begins with a job analysis, followed by a job description and person specification. Internal recruitment is cheaper and motivates staff; external recruitment brings new ideas. Selection methods include interviews, tests and assessment centres.

Training: Induction training welcomes new employees. On‑the‑job training is practical but can disrupt production. Off‑the‑job training uses external courses and may be more effective for new concepts. Training can increase productivity, quality and motivation.

Motivation: Financial methods include wages, salaries, commission and bonuses. Non‑financial methods include job enrichment, team‑working and praise. Herzberg’s hygiene factors (pay, conditions) prevent dissatisfaction, while motivators (achievement, recognition) create satisfaction.

10. External Environment and Globalisation |

External Influences: Businesses must respond to economic changes (inflation, unemployment, interest rates), legal controls (employment law, consumer protection), environmental pressures (recycling, sustainable production) and technological advances. Failure to adapt can damage reputation and profitability.

Globalisation: Globalisation increases opportunities for expansion, access to cheaper suppliers and larger markets. It also brings challenges such as cultural differences, exchange rate fluctuations and competition from multinational corporations. Multinationals can create jobs but may also exploit workers and damage local environments.

Exchange Rates: A depreciation makes exports cheaper and imports dearer; an appreciation does the opposite. This affects competitiveness and costs for businesses trading internationally.
