Physics Concept Clarifications: IB and CIE | IB 与 CIE 物理概念辨析

📚 Physics Concept Clarifications: IB and CIE | IB 与 CIE 物理概念辨析

In IB and CIE Physics, students often struggle with pairs of concepts that sound similar but carry fundamentally different meanings. Mistaking one for the other can lead to lost marks in exams and, more importantly, a shaky foundation in physical reasoning. This article clarifies ten such commonly confused concept pairs by defining each precisely, highlighting key differences, and providing typical contexts where the distinction matters most.

1. Speed and Velocity |

Speed is a scalar quantity that measures how fast an object moves, defined as the total distance travelled divided by the time interval.

Velocity is a vector quantity that describes the rate of change of displacement; it has both magnitude and direction.

When an object moves in a circle at constant speed, its speed remains unchanged, but its velocity continuously changes because the direction of motion changes.

Mathematically, average speed = total distance / Δt, while average velocity = displacement / Δt. Displacement can be zero for a round trip, giving zero average velocity even though average speed is non-zero.

A common pitfall is using speed when velocity is required in equations such as momentum p = mv, where v is velocity.

2. Mass and Weight |

Mass is an intrinsic property of an object that measures its inertia and the amount of matter it contains; it is a scalar measured in kilograms (kg) and remains constant regardless of location.

Weight is the gravitational force acting on an object’s mass; it is a vector measured in newtons (N) and depends on the local gravitational field strength: W = mg.

On the Moon, an astronaut’s mass is the same as on Earth, but their weight is approximately one-sixth because g is smaller.

In free-body diagrams, weight always acts downwards towards the centre of the planet, whereas mass appears in Newton’s second law F = ma as a measure of resistance to acceleration.

Students frequently confuse mass and weight in everyday language, but in physics, the distinction is essential for problem-solving involving gravity.

3. Work and Energy | 功与能

Work is the process of transferring energy when a force moves an object through a displacement; it is given by W = Fs cosθ, where θ is the angle between the force and displacement vectors.

Energy is a scalar quantity that represents the capacity to do work; it exists in various forms such as kinetic energy (½mv²), gravitational potential energy (mgh), and thermal energy.

Work can be positive, negative, or zero depending on the direction of the force relative to displacement; energy is always a non-negative quantity in classical mechanics.

When a person lifts a book, chemical energy from muscles is transferred as work against gravity, increasing the book’s gravitational potential energy.

The work–energy theorem states that the net work done on an object equals its change in kinetic energy, linking the process (work) to the state change (kinetic energy).

4. Heat and Temperature |

Temperature is a measure of the average random kinetic energy of the particles in a substance; it is a scalar measured in kelvin (K) or degrees Celsius (°C) and does not depend on the amount of substance.

Heat is the transfer of thermal energy from a hotter body to a cooler one because of a temperature difference; it is measured in joules (J) and describes a process, not a property of state.

A cup of boiling water and an iceberg can have the same temperature but contain vastly different amounts of internal energy and can transfer different amounts of heat.

The first law of thermodynamics relates the change in internal energy to heat added to the system and work done by the system: ΔU = Q – W.

In calorimetry, the distinction matters: specific heat capacity c relates heat and temperature change by Q = mcΔT, where mass m and c are substance-specific, yet temperature is not directly ‘contained’ but measured.

5. Electric Potential and Electric Potential Energy |

Electric potential (V) is the electric potential energy per unit charge at a point in an electric field; it is a scalar measured in volts (V).

Electric potential energy (U) is the work done by an external agent to bring a charge from infinity to that point; for a point charge q, U = qV.

Moving a positive test charge against an electric field increases its potential energy, just as lifting a mass against gravity increases gravitational potential energy. The electric potential is analogous to height in a gravitational field, independent of the charge placed there.

Two identical charges at the same location have different potential energies if their magnitudes differ, but they experience the same electric potential.

In circuits, voltage between two points is the potential difference, which drives current; the energy delivered to a component is related to the charge that passes through it times the potential difference (ΔU = qΔV).

6. Faraday’s Law and Lenz’s Law |

Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction states that the magnitude of the induced emf in a circuit is equal to the rate of change of magnetic flux linkage: |ε| = d(NΦ)/dt.

Lenz’s law gives the direction of the induced current: the induced current always flows in a direction that opposes the change in magnetic flux that produced it. This is represented by the minus sign in ε = -d(NΦ)/dt.

Faraday’s law provides the magnitude of the induced emf, while Lenz’s law ensures the conservation of energy by dictating the direction that counteracts the original flux change.

When a magnet is thrust into a coil, the changing flux induces an emf (Faraday), and the induced current creates a magnetic field that repels the incoming magnet (Lenz).

In an AC generator, the alternating current induced in the coil itself generates a back emf that opposes the change in supply voltage, a practical manifestation of Lenz’s law combined with Faraday’s law.

7. Centripetal Force and Centrifugal Force |

Centripetal force is a real force directed towards the centre of a circular path, responsible for keeping an object moving in a circle. It is not a new type of force but the net force providing centripetal acceleration: F_c = mv²/r.

Centrifugal force is a fictitious force that appears in a rotating reference frame, directed away from the centre. In an inertial frame, no such outward radial force acts on the object; the sensation of being pushed outward is due to inertia.

When a car turns a corner, the centripetal force is provided by friction between the tyres and the road; the passengers feel a ‘centrifugal’ push against the door, but from the ground frame, their inertia makes them tend to move in a straight line while the car turns.

The concept of centrifugal force is not required by IB or CIE syllabi for solving dynamics problems; all circular motion analysis should be done in inertial frames using real forces.

Students should focus on identifying the source of centripetal force (e.g., tension, gravity, friction) and avoid invoking a balancing centrifugal force.

8. Momentum and Kinetic Energy |

Momentum (p) is a vector quantity defined as the product of mass and velocity: p = mv. Its direction is the same as the velocity.

Kinetic energy (KE) is a scalar quantity that depends on the square of speed: KE = ½mv². It is always positive in mechanical systems.

Momentum is conserved in a collision only when the net external force on the system is zero, regardless of whether the collision is elastic or inelastic.

Kinetic energy is conserved only in perfectly elastic collisions; in inelastic collisions, some kinetic energy is transformed into other forms such as thermal energy or sound.

A heavy truck moving slowly can have the same momentum as a small car moving fast, but their kinetic energies will be different because KE ∝ v² while p ∝ v.

9. Interference and Diffraction |

Interference occurs when two or more waves overlap in space, resulting in a new wave pattern where the resultant displacement is the algebraic sum of the individual displacements (superposition). It produces regions of constructive and destructive interference.

Diffraction is the spreading of waves as they pass through a narrow aperture or around an obstacle. The amount of diffraction is significant when the gap size is comparable to the wavelength.

Interference requires two or more coherent sources; Young’s double-slit experiment demonstrates interference fringes formed by light from two slits.

Diffraction can be observed with a single slit; the resulting pattern consists of a broad central maximum and alternating dark and bright fringes, which is a combination of diffraction and interference effects from the wavelets within the slit.

While both phenomena demonstrate the wave nature, the experimental conditions differ: interference patterns are primarily due to path differences between separate sources, whereas single-slit diffraction is due to path differences across the same wavefront.

10. EMF and Terminal Voltage |

Electromotive force (emf, ε) of a source is the energy per unit charge converted from non-electrical forms (chemical, mechanical, etc.) to electrical energy. It is measured in volts and is a property of the source itself.

Terminal voltage (V) or terminal potential difference is the voltage actually measured across the terminals of a source when a current flows. It is always less than the emf due to the internal resistance r of the source: V = ε – Ir.

When no current flows (open circuit), the terminal voltage equals the emf because Ir term is zero.

In a cell, emf is the maximum energy per coulomb the cell can deliver, while the terminal voltage depends on the external load and drops as the current increases.

The power delivered to the external circuit is P = IV = Iε – I²r, where I²r represents the power wasted as heat inside the source. This distinguishes the source’s total output capacity from what reaches the load.

P = IV = Iε – I²r,其中 I²r 代表电源内部以热的形式损耗的功率。
