1. Introduction to the Three States |

Matter commonly exists in three physical states: solid, liquid, and gas. The state depends on the arrangement, motion, and energy of its constituent particles. A fourth state, plasma, is also recognised at very high temperatures.

2. The Kinetic Particle Model |

All matter is made of tiny particles (atoms, molecules, or ions) in constant motion. The kinetic model explains the macroscopic properties by linking temperature to the average kinetic energy of particles. In solids, particles vibrate about fixed positions; in liquids, they move around each other; in gases, they move freely and rapidly in random directions.

  • Particle spacing: solids very close, liquids close, gases far apart.
  • Interparticle forces: strongest in solids, weaker in liquids, negligible in gases.

3. Solids: Structure and Properties |

Solids have a fixed shape and volume because particles are held in a rigid lattice structure. Many solids are crystalline, with a regular repeating pattern. They are almost incompressible, have high density, and can only expand slightly when heated. Amorphous solids like glass lack long-range order.

In A-Level questions, solids are often modelled as spheres in contact, vibrating with an amplitude that increases with temperature. This explains thermal expansion: as temperature rises, the average separation between particles increases slightly due to greater vibrational amplitude.

4. Liquids: Fluidity and Density |

Liquids have a definite volume but take the shape of their container. Particles are still in close contact, but they can slide past one another, giving liquids the ability to flow. They are virtually incompressible and have densities comparable to solids. Diffusion occurs slowly in liquids because particles can move, but are still constrained by their neighbours.

Surface tension and viscosity are key liquid properties. Surface tension arises from unbalanced cohesive forces at the surface, while viscosity measures internal friction between layers. Both are temperature-dependent: surface tension and viscosity generally decrease as temperature rises.

5. Gases: Random Motion and Pressure |

Gases have neither fixed shape nor fixed volume; they expand to fill any container. Particles are far apart and move at high speeds in straight lines until they collide with each other or the container walls. These collisions cause pressure. The kinetic theory of gases assumes: (i) particles are identical, tiny spheres with negligible volume, (ii) collisions are perfectly elastic, (iii) no intermolecular forces act except during collisions, (iv) motion is random and Newtonian.

Pressure (P) is explained by the rate of change of momentum of particles striking unit area of the walls. The relationship is summarised by the ideal gas equation and combined gas laws.

6. Phase Changes and Energy |

Phase changes (melting, freezing, boiling, condensing, sublimation) occur at specific temperatures for a given pressure. During a phase change, the temperature remains constant even though heat is being added or removed. This energy breaks or forms interparticle bonds rather than changing kinetic energy.

The energy required to change 1 kg of a substance from solid to liquid at its melting point is the specific latent heat of fusion (Lf). The energy to change 1 kg from liquid to gas at the boiling point is the specific latent heat of vaporisation (Lv). Units: J·kg⁻¹.

Process Solid ↔ Liquid Liquid ↔ Gas Solid ↔ Gas
Melting / Boiling / Sublimation Melting Boiling Sublimation
Latent heat Lf Lv Ls (Lf + Lv)

Energy calculations: Q = m L, where Q is energy in J, m mass in kg, L the specific latent heat. During heating or cooling without phase change, use Q = m c Δθ, where c is specific heat capacity.

7. Gas Laws: Boyle’s, Charles’s and Gay-Lussac’s |

The macroscopic behaviour of a fixed mass of ideal gas can be described by three empirical laws:

Boyle’s Law: At constant temperature, pressure is inversely proportional to volume.
P ∝ 1/V, or P₁V₁ = P₂V₂

P ∝ 1/V,或 P₁V₁ = P₂V₂

Charles’s Law: At constant pressure, volume is directly proportional to absolute temperature.
V ∝ T, or V₁/T₁ = V₂/T₂ (T in kelvin)

Gay-Lussac’s Law: At constant volume, pressure is directly proportional to absolute temperature.
P ∝ T, or P₁/T₁ = P₂/T₂

P ∝ T,或 P₁/T₁ = P₂/T₂

These combine to give the combined gas law: (P₁V₁)/T₁ = (P₂V₂)/T₂ for a fixed mass.

8. The Ideal Gas Equation |

The equation of state for an ideal gas combines pressure, volume, temperature, and amount of substance: PV = nRT, where n is the number of moles and R = 8.31 J·mol⁻¹·K⁻¹ is the molar gas constant. An alternative form uses Boltzmann’s constant: PV = N k T, where N is the number of molecules and k = 1.38 × 10⁻²³ J·K⁻¹.

The ideal gas equation is derived from the kinetic theory and empirical laws. It assumes zero molecular volume and no intermolecular forces, so it works best at low pressure and high temperature.

Example calculation: find the volume of 2.0 mol of an ideal gas at 300 K and 1.0 × 10⁵ Pa.
V = nRT/P = (2.0 × 8.31 × 300) / (1.0 × 10⁵) ≈ 0.050 m³.

V = nRT/P = (2.0 × 8.31 × 300) / (1.0 × 10⁵) ≈ 0.050 m³。

9. Real Gases and Deviations |

Real gases deviate from ideal behaviour under high pressure or low temperature. At high pressure, the finite volume of molecules becomes significant (V real > V ideal). At low temperature, intermolecular attractions cause the pressure to be lower than predicted (P real < P ideal). These deviations can be seen in PV/nRT versus P graphs, where the ratio deviates from 1.

The van der Waals equation corrects for these effects: (P + a(n/V)²)(V − n b) = nRT, where a accounts for attractive forces and b for molecular volume. You are not required to use this equation in most A-Level exams, but you should describe the causes of non-ideality.

范德瓦尔斯方程对这些效应进行了修正:(P + a(n/V)²)(V − n b) = nRT,其中 a 修正吸引力,b 修正分子体积。

  • Gases like H₂ and He show positive deviation due to weak attractions; CO₂ and NH₃ show negative deviation at moderate pressures due to stronger attractions.

10. Brownian Motion and Evidence |

Brownian motion is the random, jerky movement of smoke particles or pollen grains suspended in a fluid. It provided early evidence for the kinetic particle model: the motion is caused by uneven bombardment by much smaller, invisible particles of the fluid. This demonstrates that particles in liquids and gases are in constant, random motion.

In A-Level questions, you might be asked to explain how Brownian motion supports the idea that molecules move faster at higher temperatures or why the motion becomes more vigorous.

11. Plasma and Other States |

Beyond the three common states, ionised gas or plasma exists at extremely high temperatures (e.g. in stars, lightning). In a plasma, electrons are separated from atoms, making it electrically conductive. The Bose-Einstein condensate is a fifth state near absolute zero, but plasma is the most commonly referenced extra state at A-Level.

Phase diagrams map the stable states of a substance as a function of temperature and pressure. Key features include the triple point (where solid, liquid, gas coexist) and the critical point (above which liquid and gas become indistinguishable). Understanding the water phase diagram is useful for explaining unusual phenomena like ice floating and the negative slope of the solid-liquid boundary.

12. Exam Tips and Common Misconceptions |

Always convert temperatures to kelvin (K = °C + 273) when using gas laws. Ensure units are consistent: pressure in pascals (Pa), volume in m³, mass in kg. Remember that during a phase change, temperature stays constant, so kinetic energy does not change, only potential energy of the system changes.

Common mistake: assuming that boiling and evaporation are the same. Boiling occurs at a specific temperature throughout the liquid; evaporation happens at the surface at any temperature. Another pitfall: using Celsius in PV/T calculations, which leads to impossible results. Always check the number of significant figures.

Finally, practice drawing and interpreting graphs: P-V isotherms (hyperbolas), V-T at constant P (straight line through origin), P-T at constant V (straight line through origin). Know how to estimate absolute zero by extrapolating a V-T graph to V = 0.
