1. What is Demand? |

In GCSE Economics, demand refers to the quantity of a good or service that consumers are willing and able to purchase at various prices over a given period, ceteris paribus (all else equal). It is not simply wanting something; a person must also have the financial ability to pay for it. Effective demand therefore combines desire with purchasing power.

A demand schedule shows the quantities demanded at different prices, while a demand curve plots this relationship graphically, with price on the vertical axis and quantity on the horizontal axis. The downward slope of the demand curve reflects the law of demand.

2. The Law of Demand |

The law of demand states that, ceteris paribus, as the price of a good increases, the quantity demanded decreases, and conversely, as price falls, quantity demanded rises. This inverse relationship exists because of the income effect and the substitution effect. When a price drops, consumers feel richer (income effect) and may also switch from pricier alternatives (substitution effect), both of which boost demand.

It is crucial to remember that the law of demand only explains movements along the demand curve, not shifts of the entire curve. Changes in the price of the good itself cause a change in quantity demanded, represented by a movement from one point to another on the same curve.

3. Movement vs Shift of the Demand Curve |

A movement along the demand curve occurs solely because of a change in the good’s own price. For example, if the price of cinema tickets drops from £10 to £8, more tickets are demanded – we slide down the existing curve. In contrast, a shift of the demand curve means that at every given price, consumers now wish to buy a different quantity. This is caused by factors other than the good’s price.

An outward shift (to the right) shows an increase in demand, while an inward shift (to the left) indicates a decrease in demand. Exam questions frequently ask you to distinguish between a movement and a shift, so be precise with your language.

4. Determinants of Demand |

Several non-price factors can shift the entire demand curve. Changes in consumers’ incomes are one major determinant. For normal goods, a rise in income boosts demand (shift right). For inferior goods, however, higher income may reduce demand as consumers switch to better alternatives.

Tastes and preferences also play a key role. Successful advertising or social trends can significantly raise demand for a product. The prices of related goods matter too: substitutes (e.g., tea and coffee) see a positive cross-relationship – a rise in the price of coffee increases demand for tea. Complements (e.g., printers and ink cartridges) show a negative relationship – a rise in the price of printers may decrease demand for ink cartridges.

Other demand shifters include population size and demographics, expectations of future price changes, and seasonal factors. A larger population increases the number of potential buyers, shifting demand right. If consumers expect prices to rise next month, they may buy more now, increasing current demand.

5. What is Supply? |

Supply is the quantity of a good or service that producers are willing and able to offer for sale at various prices over a specific time period, ceteris paribus. Like demand, supply is about both willingness and ability – firms need the resources and capacity to produce and sell the product.

The supply schedule and supply curve represent this relationship. The typical supply curve slopes upward, reflecting that higher prices give producers a greater incentive to supply more, as they can earn higher profits.

6. The Law of Supply |

The law of supply asserts that, ceteris paribus, as the price of a good rises, the quantity supplied increases, and as price falls, quantity supplied decreases. This positive relationship is driven by the profit motive: when market prices are higher, producing and selling more units becomes more profitable, encouraging firms to expand output.

Note again that a change in the good’s own price results in a movement along the supply curve, not a shift. A movement from point A to point B on the same curve reflects the law of supply at work.

7. Movement vs Shift of the Supply Curve |

A movement along the supply curve is caused exclusively by a change in the product’s price. For instance, if the price of wheat rises, farmers move up along their supply curve and offer more wheat for sale. A shift of the supply curve, however, happens when a determinant other than the price of the good itself changes, altering how much producers are willing to supply at every price.

A rightward shift means an increase in supply – more is supplied at each price. A leftward shift signals a decrease in supply – less is supplied at each price. Exam markers often look for clear use of ‘shift in supply’ versus ‘movement along the supply curve’.

8. Determinants of Supply |

Several conditions and events can shift the supply curve. Changes in production costs are among the most important. A rise in wages, raw material costs, or energy prices makes production more expensive, decreasing supply (leftward shift). Conversely, a drop in costs or the introduction of a new, more efficient technology can boost supply (rightward shift).

Taxes and subsidies likewise influence supply. An increase in indirect taxes (like VAT or excise duties) raises costs and reduces supply. Government subsidies lower firms’ costs and encourage more production, shifting supply to the right. The number of firms in the market also matters: more producers entering the industry expand market supply.

Other shifters include changes in the prices of related goods in production (e.g., joint supply or alternative outputs), expectations of future prices, and external shocks such as weather for agricultural products or geopolitical events affecting oil supply. An expectation of higher future prices may cause producers to withhold some supply today, shifting the current supply curve left.

9. Market Equilibrium |

Market equilibrium is the point where the demand curve and the supply curve intersect. At the equilibrium price, the quantity consumers wish to buy exactly equals the quantity producers wish to sell. There is no shortage and no surplus; the market clears. This price is often called the market-clearing price.

In a competitive market, any deviation from equilibrium sets forces in motion that push price back to this level. If the market price is above equilibrium, there is excess supply (a surplus), and producers will lower prices to sell off unsold stock, moving price down toward equilibrium. If price is below equilibrium, excess demand (a shortage) emerges, and consumers bid up the price, pushing it upward.

Equilibrium is often illustrated using a simple table or graph. Students are expected to calculate the equilibrium price and quantity from a demand and supply schedule, and to show how changes in market conditions alter the equilibrium.

10. Changes in Equilibrium |

When either demand or supply shifts, the equilibrium price and quantity adjust. The table below summarises the standard outcomes. Understanding these combinations will help you answer 4- to 6-mark analysis questions accurately.

Change Effect on Price Effect on Quantity
Increase in Demand Rises () Rises ()
Decrease in Demand Falls () Falls ()
Increase in Supply Falls () Rises ()
Decrease in Supply Rises () Falls ()

Note that the direction of quantity change under a supply shift is always opposite to the price change. Many students lose marks by confusing these outcomes, so memorising this logic — or learning to draw the diagrams quickly — is essential.

11. Price Elasticity of Demand (PED) |

Price elasticity of demand measures the responsiveness of quantity demanded to a change in the good’s own price. It is calculated as:

PED = %ΔQd / %ΔP

If the absolute value of PED is greater than 1, demand is price elastic – consumers are very responsive to price changes. A value less than 1 indicates price inelastic demand, where quantity demanded changes little when price changes. A unitary elasticity (PED = 1) means the percentage change in quantity demanded equals the percentage change in price.

Several factors influence PED: the availability of close substitutes, whether the good is a necessity or a luxury, the proportion of income spent on it, and the time period considered. Goods with many substitutes, like branded clothing, tend to have elastic demand. Addictive goods or essential medicines often have inelastic demand.

Understanding elasticity helps firms make pricing decisions. If demand is inelastic, raising price increases total revenue, because the fall in quantity sold is proportionally smaller. If demand is elastic, a price rise may reduce total revenue.

12. Price Elasticity of Supply (PES) |

Price elasticity of supply measures the responsiveness of quantity supplied to a change in price. The formula is:

PES = %ΔQs / %ΔP

When PES > 1, supply is price elastic; producers can increase output easily when price rises. When PES < 1, supply is price inelastic, meaning quantity supplied is relatively unresponsive to price changes. Unlike PED, we do not consider absolute values because the relationship is positive.

The key determinants of PES are production time, the availability of spare capacity, the ease of storing stocks, and the mobility of factors of production. Agricultural supply is often inelastic in the short run because crops take time to grow. Manufactured goods with large inventories can have a more elastic supply.

In GCSE exams, you may be asked to interpret PED and PES values, to suggest why a government might tax goods with inelastic demand, or to explain how supply elasticity affects the volatility of prices in commodity markets. Always link your answer back to the core concepts of demand and supply shifts and the shape of the curves.
