📚 GCSE OCR Economics: Concept Clarifications | GCSE OCR

In GCSE Economics, many terms sound similar but have distinct meanings. Mixing them up can cost marks in exams. This article clarifies ten key pairs of concepts that OCR candidates often find confusing, with clear definitions, examples, and contrast points to help you use each term accurately.

1. Demand vs Quantity Demanded |

Demand refers to the entire relationship between price and the quantity consumers are willing and able to buy, shown by the whole demand curve. A change in demand means the curve shifts because of factors like income, tastes, or prices of related goods.

Quantity demanded is a specific point on the demand curve at a given price. It changes only when the price of the good itself changes, causing a movement along the curve.

Key distinction: A shift of the demand curve is ‘a change in demand’; a movement along the curve is ‘a change in quantity demanded’.

2. Supply vs Quantity Supplied |

Supply is the whole schedule showing how much producers are willing to offer at different prices, represented by the supply curve. A change in supply means the curve shifts due to factors such as production costs, technology, or taxes.

Quantity supplied is the amount producers are willing to sell at a specific price. A change in the good’s own price leads to a movement along the supply curve, not a shift.

Remember: ‘Supply’ = curve; ‘quantity supplied’ = point on the curve. Only own-price changes cause movements along the curve.

3. Normal Goods vs Inferior Goods |

Normal goods are those for which demand increases when consumer incomes rise. Most goods are normal, such as branded clothing, eating out, and new cars.

Inferior goods experience a fall in demand as incomes rise, because consumers switch to higher-quality substitutes. Examples include bus travel, supermarket own-brand basics, and second-hand goods.

The classification depends on income elasticity of demand: normal goods have positive YED; inferior goods have negative YED.

4. Substitutes vs Complements |

Substitutes are goods that can replace each other in consumption. An increase in the price of one leads to an increase in demand for the other. Examples: tea and coffee, butter and margarine.

Complements are goods that are consumed together. A rise in the price of one reduces the demand for the other. Examples: printers and ink cartridges, cars and petrol.

Cross-price elasticity of demand (XED) helps measure these relationships: positive XED for substitutes, negative for complements.

5. Private Goods vs Public Goods |

Private goods are both rival and excludable. Rivalry means one person’s consumption reduces the amount available for others. Excludability means it is possible to prevent non-payers from using the good. Most everyday items are private goods.

Public goods are non-rival and non-excludable. National defence and street lighting are classic examples. Because of the free-rider problem, public goods are usually provided by the government.

Be careful: ‘public good’ is not the same as ‘good provided by the public sector’, though many public goods are indeed state-provided.

6. Positive Externalities vs Negative Externalities |

An externality occurs when the production or consumption of a good affects a third party not directly involved. Positive externalities create external benefits; negative externalities create external costs.

With a positive externality, the social benefit exceeds the private benefit. Education and vaccination are examples. Governments may subsidise these to encourage higher consumption.

With a negative externality, the social cost exceeds the private cost. Pollution from factories is a typical case. Taxation and regulation are common government responses.

The exam expects you to draw and explain the welfare loss or gain triangles relative to the socially optimal output.

7. Price Elasticity of Demand (PED) vs Income Elasticity of Demand (YED) |

PED measures the responsiveness of quantity demanded to a change in the good’s own price. PED = % change in quantity demanded ÷ % change in price. It is almost always negative, but we often ignore the sign.

YED measures how quantity demanded responds to a change in consumer income. YED = % change in quantity demanded ÷ % change in income. It can be positive or negative, distinguishing normal from inferior goods.

Do not confuse them: PED is about price, YED is about income. Both help businesses predict sales from different economic changes.

8. Monetary Policy vs Fiscal Policy |

Monetary policy involves adjusting the money supply and interest rates to influence aggregate demand. In the UK, the Monetary Policy Committee of the Bank of England sets the Bank Rate to target 2% inflation.

Fiscal policy uses government spending and taxation to achieve macroeconomic objectives. The Chancellor of the Exchequer announces the budget, setting expenditure and tax rates.

Key distinction: monetary policy is conducted by the central bank; fiscal policy is conducted by the government. Both aim for stable growth, low unemployment, and price stability.

9. Microeconomics vs Macroeconomics |

Microeconomics studies the behaviour of individual economic agents: households, firms, and markets. Topics include demand and supply, elasticity, market failure, and the labour market.

Macroeconomics looks at the economy as a whole. It deals with aggregate demand and supply, inflation, unemployment, economic growth, and international trade.

OCR GCSE covers both, but questions may specify ‘micro’ or ‘macro’ contexts. Knowing the difference helps you select the right concepts and diagrams.

OCR GCSE

10. Economic Growth vs Economic Development |

Economic growth is a narrow concept, usually measured by the percentage increase in real GDP. It shows the expansion of a country’s productive capacity.

Economic development is broader; it includes improvements in living standards, health, education, and reduction of poverty. It is often measured by the Human Development Index (HDI).

A country can experience growth without real development if the extra income benefits only a small segment of society.

11. Inflation vs Deflation |

Inflation is a sustained rise in the general price level, typically measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI). Moderate inflation is common in growing economies; the UK target is 2%.

Deflation is a sustained fall in the general price level. It may sound positive, but it can lead to falling wages, reduced spending, and rising real debt burdens, often associated with recession.

Disinflation is a slowdown in the rate of inflation – prices still rise, but more slowly. Do not confuse disinflation with deflation.

12. Trade-Off vs Opportunity Cost |

A trade-off means choosing more of one thing means having less of another. It is the situation of having to give up some of one objective to achieve more of another, illustrated by the production possibility frontier (PPF).

Opportunity cost is the value of the next best alternative forgone. It is the specific cost of a choice, measured in terms of the sacrificed alternative.

In a PPF, moving from one point to another involves a trade-off; the opportunity cost is the quantity of one good given up to produce more of the other.
