1. Cell Biology |
Animal and plant cells share common structures: a nucleus containing DNA, cytoplasm where chemical reactions occur, a cell membrane that controls entry and exit, mitochondria for aerobic respiration and ribosomes for protein synthesis. Plant cells additionally possess a rigid cell wall made of cellulose, a large permanent vacuole filled with cell sap, and chloroplasts that absorb light for photosynthesis. Bacterial cells are prokaryotic; they lack a true nucleus and instead have a single circular chromosome of DNA plus small rings of DNA called plasmids.
Magnification can be calculated using the formula: Actual size = Image size ÷ Magnification. When using a light microscope, total magnification = eyepiece lens magnification × objective lens magnification. Specialised cells such as sperm cells (with a tail for movement and many mitochondria) and root hair cells (with a large surface area for water absorption) demonstrate how structure relates to function. Mitosis produces two genetically identical daughter cells for growth and repair. Stem cells are undifferentiated cells that can become specialised; embryonic stem cells can differentiate into any cell type, while adult stem cells have limited potential. In plants, meristems contain stem cells that allow continuous growth.
2. Organisation and Organ Systems |
The digestive system breaks down large insoluble molecules into small soluble ones. Enzymes are biological catalysts that speed up reactions without being used up. Amylase (produced in salivary glands and pancreas) breaks starch into maltose. Proteases (stomach and pancreas) break proteins into amino acids. Lipases (pancreas) break lipids into fatty acids and glycerol. Bile, made in the liver and stored in the gall bladder, emulsifies fats and neutralises stomach acid to provide an alkaline pH for intestinal enzymes.
The heart is a double pump. Deoxygenated blood enters the right atrium via the vena cava, passes to the right ventricle and is pumped to the lungs through the pulmonary artery. Oxygenated blood returns through the pulmonary vein to the left atrium, moves into the left ventricle and is pumped to the entire body via the aorta. Valves prevent backflow. Blood consists of red blood cells (carry oxygen), white blood cells (defence), platelets (clotting) and plasma (transports CO₂, urea, hormones, heat). Arteries carry blood away from the heart under high pressure and have thick muscular walls; veins return blood to the heart and contain valves; capillaries are thin-walled for efficient exchange.
In plants, xylem vessels transport water and mineral ions from roots to leaves; they are made of dead cells and strengthened with lignin. Phloem tubes transport sucrose and amino acids up and down the plant; they consist of living cells with sieve plates and companion cells. Transpiration is the evaporation of water vapour from leaves, driven by diffusion through stomata. Factors increasing transpiration include higher temperature, increased light intensity, lower humidity and greater air movement.
3. Infection and Response |
Pathogens are microorganisms that cause disease. Viruses (e.g., measles, HIV, tobacco mosaic virus) invade host cells and reproduce inside them. Bacteria (e.g., Salmonella, Gonorrhoea) damage cells or produce toxins. Fungi (e.g., Rose black spot) and protists (e.g., the malaria parasite) also cause disease. The body’s first line of defence includes the skin, mucus in the airways and cilia that sweep away pathogens. If pathogens enter, white blood cells can engulf them by phagocytosis, produce specific antibodies or release antitoxins.
Vaccination involves introducing a harmless or dead form of the pathogen. This stimulates lymphocytes to produce antibodies and memory cells, providing long-term immunity without causing illness. Antibiotics are drugs that kill bacteria but are ineffective against viruses. The overuse and misuse of antibiotics have led to the evolution of antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains, which is a major global health concern. Monoclonal antibodies are produced from a single clone of cells and can be used in pregnancy tests, cancer treatment and diagnosis.
4. Bioenergetics: Photosynthesis and Respiration |
Photosynthesis is the process by which plants and algae convert light energy into chemical energy stored in glucose. It is an endothermic reaction. The word equation: Carbon dioxide + Water → Glucose + Oxygen (in the presence of light and chlorophyll). The balanced chemical equation can be written as:
6CO₂ + 6H₂O → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂
The limiting factors for photosynthesis are light intensity, carbon dioxide concentration and temperature. Farmers can use these to optimise crop growth in greenhouses. The glucose produced is used for respiration, stored as starch, converted into cellulose for cell walls or proteins for growth.
Respiration is the exothermic release of energy from glucose. Aerobic respiration uses oxygen and produces a large amount of energy:
C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ → 6CO₂ + 6H₂O
Anaerobic respiration in animal cells produces lactic acid and less energy. In yeast and plants, anaerobic respiration produces ethanol and carbon dioxide (fermentation). Metabolism is the sum of all chemical reactions in an organism, including synthesis of new molecules and breakdown of excess proteins in the liver to form urea.
5. Homeostasis and Response |
Homeostasis maintains a stable internal environment. The nervous system uses electrical impulses along neurones. A reflex arc follows the pathway: stimulus → receptor → sensory neurone → relay neurone (in CNS) → motor neurone → effector (muscle or gland). At a synapse, an impulse triggers the release of chemical neurotransmitters that diffuse across the gap and bind to the next neurone.
Blood glucose concentration is controlled by the pancreas. When blood glucose rises, the pancreas releases insulin, which causes liver and muscle cells to convert glucose into glycogen. When blood glucose falls, the pancreas releases glucagon, which causes the liver to convert glycogen back into glucose. In Type 1 diabetes, the pancreas produces little or no insulin; patients require insulin injections. Thermoregulation is controlled by the thermoregulatory centre in the hypothalamus. When body temperature rises, vasodilation and sweating help cool the body; when it falls, vasoconstriction and shivering generate heat.
Plants respond to stimuli (tropisms) using the hormone auxin. In phototropism, shoots bend towards light because auxin accumulates on the shaded side, causing cells to elongate more than those on the light side. In gravitropism, roots grow downwards because auxin inhibits cell elongation on the lower side, causing the root to bend down. Auxin is also used commercially in rooting powders and weed killers.
6. Inheritance, Variation and Evolution |
DNA is a double-helix polymer made of nucleotide monomers, each containing a phosphate, a sugar (deoxyribose) and a nitrogenous base (A, T, C, G). Complementary base pairing: adenine (A) pairs with thymine (T), and cytosine (C) pairs with guanine (G). A gene is a section of DNA that codes for a specific protein. In protein synthesis, the gene is transcribed into messenger RNA (mRNA) in the nucleus, which then travels to a ribosome where translation occurs, assembling amino acids into a polypeptide chain.
Alleles are different versions of a gene. A dominant allele will express itself even if only one copy is present, while a recessive allele requires two copies. Genetic crosses can be shown using Punnett squares. In humans, sex is determined by the 23rd pair of chromosomes: females have XX, males have XY. Inherited disorders such as cystic fibrosis (recessive) and polydactyly (dominant) illustrate single-gene inheritance.
Evolution occurs through natural selection. Within a population, there is variation due to mutations. Individuals with characteristics better suited to the environment are more likely to survive, reproduce and pass on the advantageous alleles to their offspring. Over many generations, this leads to changes in the species. Evidence for evolution includes fossils, antibiotic resistance in bacteria and the observation of rapid evolution in response to environmental changes. The Linnaean classification system groups organisms into Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus and Species, with the binomial name using Genus and Species.
7. Ecology | 生态学
Organisms have adaptations that allow them to survive in their environments. These can be structural (e.g., thick fur in polar bears), behavioural (e
