📚 IGCSE AQA Chemistry: Fundamentals of Organic Chemistry | IGCSE AQA
Organic chemistry is a central part of the IGCSE AQA Chemistry specification. This topic covers the structure, naming, and reactions of carbon-based compounds, including alkanes, alkenes, alcohols, and carboxylic acids. Mastering these fundamentals provides a strong foundation for understanding fuels, polymers, and biological molecules.
1. What is Organic Chemistry? |
Organic chemistry is the study of carbon-containing compounds, with a few exceptions. Compounds such as carbon dioxide (CO₂), carbonates (e.g., CaCO₃), and hydrogencarbonates (e.g., NaHCO₃) are classified as inorganic despite containing carbon.
Originally, ‘organic’ referred to substances from living organisms, but now it encompasses a vast range of synthetic materials as well.
2. Carbon Bonding and Structural Diversity |
Carbon atoms have four electrons in their outer shell, so they form four covalent bonds to achieve a stable octet. This allows carbon to bond with other carbon atoms, forming chains, branched chains, and rings.
Carbon can also form single, double, or triple bonds with itself and other atoms, giving rise to saturated and unsaturated compounds.
Because of this versatility, carbon forms the backbone of millions of different molecules, making organic chemistry a vast field.
3. Homologous Series | 同系物
A homologous series is a family of organic compounds with the same functional group, similar chemical properties, and a gradual trend in physical properties. Successive members differ by a –CH₂– unit.
Each homologous series has a general formula. For example, alkanes: CₙH₂ₙ₊₂, alkenes: CₙH₂ₙ, alcohols: CₙH₂ₙ₊₁OH, carboxylic acids: CₙH₂ₙ₊₁COOH.
As the number of carbon atoms increases, the boiling points and viscosities of the members rise, while flammability decreases. This trend is important when considering the uses of these compounds as fuels.
4. Functional Groups | 官能团
A functional group is an atom or group of atoms that determines the chemical properties of an organic compound. Compounds with the same functional group undergo similar reactions.
Common functional groups in IGCSE AQA include: C=C (alkenes), –OH (alcohols), and –COOH (carboxylic acids). Alkanes do not have a functional group; their chemistry is dominated by the relative unreactivity of C–C and C–H bonds.
Identifying the functional group allows you to predict the types of reactions a compound will undergo, which is a key skill for the exam.
5. Basics of Nomenclature |
Systematic (IUPAC) naming uses prefixes to indicate the number of carbon atoms in the longest chain: meth- (1), eth- (2), prop- (3), but- (4). For IGCSE, you are typically required to name molecules with up to four carbon atoms.
The suffix indicates the homologous series: -ane for alkanes, -ene for alkenes, -ol for alcohols, and -oic acid for carboxylic acids. For example, CH₄ is methane, C₂H₄ is ethene, C₂H₅OH is ethanol, and CH₃COOH is ethanoic acid.
Position numbers may be used when functional groups or side branches are not at the end; however, for simple molecules with up to four carbons, numbering is often straightforward (e.g., propan-1-ol and propan-2-ol).
6. Alkanes |
Alkanes are saturated hydrocarbons with the general formula CₙH₂ₙ₊₂. They contain only single covalent bonds (C–C and C–H) and are relatively unreactive.
The first four straight-chain alkanes are methane (CH₄), ethane (C₂H₆), propane (C₃H₈), and butane (C₄H₁₀).
Alkanes undergo complete combustion in excess oxygen to produce carbon dioxide and water. For example: CH₄ + 2O₂ → CO₂ + 2H₂O. Incomplete combustion can produce carbon monoxide (CO) or soot (C).
They are used as fuels because their combustion is highly exothermic. Methane is the main component of natural gas.
