📚 IGCSE Economics: Key Concept Comparisons | IGCSE

In IGCSE Economics, mastering the subject often depends on understanding the fine differences between closely related concepts. This article compares ten essential pairs of economic ideas that frequently appear in exams. By reading both the English and Chinese explanations for each comparison, you will strengthen your ability to define, apply, and distinguish these terms confidently.

1. Microeconomics vs Macroeconomics |

Microeconomics studies the behaviour of individual economic agents such as households and firms. It focuses on decisions about resource allocation, pricing in individual markets, and the determination of wages for specific types of labour. Key topics include demand and supply, elasticity, and market failure.

Macroeconomics examines the economy as a whole. It deals with aggregate variables such as total national output (GDP), the overall price level (inflation), total employment, and international trade flows. The main objectives of macroeconomic policy are economic growth, low and stable inflation, full employment, and a sustainable balance of payments.

Micro – individual markets, prices of specific goods, firm behaviour

2. Positive Statements vs Normative Statements |

A positive statement is objective and can be tested against facts. It describes what is, was, or will be, without expressing any value judgement. For example, ‘An increase in income tax reduces disposable income’ is a positive claim because it can be verified by economic data.

A normative statement contains a value judgement. It expresses an opinion about what ought to happen and cannot be proven true or false. For example, ‘The government should raise income tax to reduce inequality’ reflects personal values and political preferences.

  • Key word for positive: ‘is’, ‘will’.
  • Key word for normative: ‘should’, ‘ought to’.

3. Demand vs Quantity Demanded |

Demand refers to the entire relationship between price and the quantity consumers are willing and able to purchase over a range of prices. A change in demand means the whole demand curve shifts, caused by factors other than the product’s own price, such as changes in income, tastes, or the price of related goods.

Quantity demanded is a specific point on a given demand curve. It corresponds to the amount consumers buy at a particular price. A movement along the demand curve occurs solely when the price of the product itself changes, causing an extension or contraction of quantity demanded.

Change in Demand → Shift of curve; Change in Quantity Demanded → Movement along curve

4. Supply vs Quantity Supplied |

Supply is the whole relationship between price and the quantity firms are willing to produce. A change in supply shifts the entire supply curve, triggered by factors such as production costs, technology, taxes, subsidies, or the number of sellers in the market.

Quantity supplied is the amount firms are willing to sell at a single price. Only a change in the product’s own price causes a movement along an existing supply curve, resulting in an increase (extension) or decrease (contraction) of quantity supplied.

Confusing these two often leads to exam mistakes. Always ask: ‘Is the change caused by the price of this good, or by something else?’

5. Price Elasticity of Demand (PED) vs Price Elasticity of Supply (PES) |

PED measures the responsiveness of quantity demanded to a change in the product’s own price. It is calculated as: PED = % change in quantity demanded ÷ % change in price. PED is always negative (or zero if perfectly inelastic), but we often ignore the minus sign when comparing values. Demand can be elastic (PED > 1), inelastic (PED < 1), or unitary (PED = 1).

PES measures the responsiveness of quantity supplied to a change in price. It is calculated in a similar way: PES = % change in quantity supplied ÷ % change in price. PES is normally positive because higher prices usually encourage firms to supply more. The main factors affecting PES are time period, availability of spare capacity, and the ease of storing stock.

PED – demand side, negative sign, influenced by substitutes, necessity, time PED –
PES – supply side, positive sign, influenced by spare capacity, stocks, time PES –

6. Private Goods vs Public Goods |

A private good is both rival and excludable. Rivalry means that one person’s consumption reduces the amount available for others. Excludability means that it is possible to prevent non-payers from consuming the good. Most everyday items such as clothes, food, and smartphones are private goods.

A public good is non-rival and non-excludable. Non-rivalry means one person’s use does not diminish availability for others. Non-excludability means no one can be stopped from benefiting once the good is provided. Pure examples include street lighting and national defence. Public goods are often under-provided by the free market, leading to the free-rider problem.

  • Remember: A park is not a pure public good if it can be gated; it becomes a quasi-public good.

7. Direct Taxes vs Indirect Taxes |

Direct taxes are levied directly on the income, wealth, or profit of individuals and firms. The burden of a direct tax cannot be shifted to someone else. Examples include income tax, corporation tax, and inheritance tax. Direct taxes are often progressive, meaning the average rate rises as income rises.

Indirect taxes are levied on goods and services. The tax is included in the purchase price, so the initial payer (the shop) can pass the burden partly or fully to the consumer. Examples include value-added tax (VAT), excise duties on alcohol and tobacco, and import tariffs. Indirect taxes tend to be regressive, taking a larger share of income from low-income households.

Direct tax – on income and wealth, cannot be shifted, progressive
Indirect tax – on spending, can be shifted to consumers, regressive

8. Fiscal Policy vs Monetary Policy |

Fiscal policy involves the government’s use of taxation and public spending to influence the economy. The budget can be expansionary (higher spending and/or lower taxes to boost aggregate demand) or contractionary (lower spending and/or higher taxes to reduce demand). Fiscal policy is decided by the government.

Monetary policy involves adjusting the money supply and interest rates, usually carried out by a country’s central bank. A lower interest rate encourages borrowing and spending, stimulating aggregate demand, while a higher rate cools down an overheating economy. In many countries, the central bank operates independently to target inflation.

  • Fiscal: government budget, taxes, infrastructure spending.
  • Monetary: interest rates, quantitative easing, exchange rate interventions.

9. Economic Growth vs Economic Development |

Economic growth is a narrow, quantitative concept. It refers to an increase in a country’s real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) over time. Growth can be measured by the percentage change in real GDP. A country can experience rapid growth without necessarily improving the quality of life for its citizens.

Economic development is a broader, qualitative concept. It measures improvements in living standards, health, education, and general well-being. Indicators include the Human Development Index (HDI), literacy rates, life expectancy, and reduced poverty. Development focuses on how growth is distributed and whether it lifts the poorest sections of society.

An exam tip: always use ‘economic growth’ for GDP changes and ‘economic development’ when discussing living standards or HDI.

10. Inflation vs Deflation |

Inflation is a sustained rise in the general price level, leading to a fall in the purchasing power of money. A mild and stable inflation rate (e.g. 2%) is often seen as a sign of a healthy economy. Inflation can be caused by demand-pull factors (too much demand chasing too few goods) or cost-push factors (rising costs of production).

Deflation is a sustained fall in the general price level. While it may seem attractive, deflation is often harmful. Consumers delay purchases expecting further price declines, which reduces aggregate demand and can lead to a downward spiral of falling output, rising unemployment, and further price drops. The real value of debt also increases, hurting borrowers.

Inflation – rising prices, reduces real income if wages lag, erodes savings
Deflation – falling prices, encourages hoarding, increases real debt burden
