📚 Nitrogen Cycle Exam Essentials |

The nitrogen cycle is a fundamental biogeochemical cycle that recycles nitrogen through the atmosphere, soil, and living organisms. For IGCSE Edexcel Biology, you need to know the key processes, the roles of different microorganisms, and the importance of this cycle for life on Earth.

1. The Importance of Nitrogen |

Nitrogen is a vital element for all living organisms because it is an essential component of proteins, DNA, and ATP. Although the atmosphere is about 78% nitrogen gas (N₂), most organisms cannot use it directly in this form.

Plants need nitrogen in the form of nitrate ions (NO₃⁻) or ammonium ions (NH₄⁺) to build amino acids and proteins. Animals obtain nitrogen by feeding on plants or other animals. The nitrogen cycle converts inert N₂ into these usable forms and then returns it to the atmosphere.

2. Overview of the Nitrogen Cycle |

The nitrogen cycle describes the movement of nitrogen between the atmosphere, soil, plants, and animals. It involves four main stages: nitrogen fixation, nitrification, ammonification, and denitrification. Additional processes, such as assimilation and feeding, link these stages.

At each stage, specific bacteria play an essential role. Understanding which bacteria are involved and whether the process requires oxygen is critical for IGCSE exams.

Simplified pathway: N₂ → NH₄⁺ → NO₂⁻ → NO₃⁻ → proteins → NH₄⁺ → N₂

简化路径:N₂ → NH₄⁺ → NO₂⁻ → NO₃⁻ → 蛋白质 → NH₄⁺ → N₂

3. Nitrogen Fixation: From N₂ to Ammonia |

Nitrogen fixation converts unreactive atmospheric nitrogen gas (N₂) into ammonia (NH₃), which quickly dissolves in soil water to form ammonium ions (NH₄⁺). This process is carried out in three ways: lightning, the Haber process (industrial), and biological fixation by bacteria.

Lightning provides enough energy to cause nitrogen and oxygen to react, producing nitrates that are washed into the soil by rain. The Haber process uses high temperatures and pressures to manufacture ammonia for fertilisers. In nature, biological fixation is the most significant.

4. Biological Nitrogen Fixation: Rhizobium and Legumes |

Certain free-living soil bacteria, such as Azotobacter, can fix nitrogen. However, the most important biological fixation occurs through the mutualistic relationship between Rhizobium bacteria and leguminous plants (peas, beans, clover).

Rhizobium bacteria live inside root nodules of legumes. The plant provides carbohydrates and a protective environment; the bacteria supply the plant with ammonium ions converted from N₂. This is why farmers often rotate crops with legumes to enrich soil nitrogen naturally.

After harvesting, decomposing legume roots leave behind nitrogen-rich compounds, improving soil fertility without artificial fertilisers.

5. Nitrification: Oxidation of Ammonia to Nitrates |

Ammonium ions in the soil are converted into nitrites and then into nitrates by nitrifying bacteria. This is an aerobic process that requires oxygen.

First, Nitrosomonas bacteria oxidise ammonium ions (NH₄⁺) into nitrite ions (NO₂⁻). Then, Nitrobacter bacteria oxidise nitrites into nitrate ions (NO₃⁻). Nitrates are the most easily absorbed form of nitrogen for plants.

Well-aerated soils support rapid nitrification. This is why farmers plough fields to increase oxygen levels in the soil.

6. Assimilation and the Food Chain |

Plants absorb nitrate ions from the soil through their roots by active transport. They use these nitrates to synthesise plant proteins, nucleic acids, and chlorophyll. This incorporation of nitrogen into organic molecules is called assimilation.

When animals consume plants (or other animals), they digest the proteins and use the amino acids to build their own proteins. This transfers nitrogen through the food chain. Excess nitrogen is excreted as urea or uric acid, which enters the soil.

7. Ammonification (Decomposition) |

When plants and animals die, or when animals excrete waste, saprobiotic bacteria and fungi (decomposers) break down the organic nitrogen compounds into ammonium ions. This process is called ammonification.

Saprobiotic microorganisms secrete enzymes onto the dead matter, digesting proteins and urea externally, and then absorb the products. The released ammonium ions re-enter the soil and become available for nitrification or direct plant uptake.

Without ammonification, dead material would accumulate, and nitrogen would remain locked in complex organic forms unavailable to plants.

8. Denitrification: Nitrates to Nitrogen Gas |

Denitrifying bacteria convert nitrates in the soil back into nitrogen gas (N₂), which returns to the atmosphere. This process is anaerobic and occurs in waterlogged soils where oxygen is absent.

Common denitrifying bacteria include Pseudomonas. This step reduces soil fertility because it removes nitrates that plants could use. Farmers try to prevent waterlogging to minimise denitrification.

In the global nitrogen cycle, denitrification balances nitrogen fixation, preventing an endless accumulation of fixed nitrogen in ecosystems.

9. Human Impact: Fertilisers and Eutrophication |

Farmers often add artificial nitrate fertilisers (from the Haber process) or animal manure to boost crop growth. However, excess fertiliser can be washed into rivers and lakes by rain, leading to eutrophication.

Eutrophication involves a rapid increase in algal growth due to high nitrate levels. Algae block sunlight, causing aquatic plants to die. Decomposers then break down the dead material, using up oxygen, and leading to the death of fish and other aquatic life.

Managing fertiliser use, creating buffer zones, and treating sewage help reduce nitrate runoff and protect freshwater ecosystems.

10. Exam Focus: Key Bacteria and Processes |

IGCSE exam questions frequently ask you to name the bacteria responsible for each conversion and state whether oxygen is required. The table below summarises the core information you must memorise.

Rhizobium, Azotobacter, lightning, Haber process N₂ → NH₄⁺ Not by bacteria (lightning/industrial)
Nitrosomonas, then Nitrobacter NH₄⁺ → NO₂⁻ → NO₃⁻ Aerobic
Saprobiotic bacteria and fungi Organic N → NH₄⁺ Aerobic / anaerobic
Denitrifying bacteria (e.g. Pseudomonas) NO₃⁻ → N₂ Anaerobic

Common exam pitfalls include confusing nitrification with denitrification, or forgetting that Rhizobium lives inside root nodules, not free in the soil. Remember that plants can take up both ammonium and nitrate, but nitrates are the main form of absorption.

When asked to explain the importance of the nitrogen cycle, link your answer to the recycling of nutrients, prevention of dead material accumulation, and provision of a usable form of nitrogen for protein synthesis.
