📚 Organic Chemistry Essentials for IB & CIE Chemistry | IB与CIE化学有机化学基础精讲

Mastering organic chemistry begins with a solid grasp of its fundamental principles. This article synthesises the key topics from IB (both Standard and Higher Level) and CIE A-Level Chemistry: functional groups, nomenclature, isomerism, and fundamental reaction mechanisms. Whether you are preparing for internal assessments or final exams, these concepts are vital for solving synthesis problems and understanding reaction pathways.

1. What is Organic Chemistry? |

Organic chemistry is the branch of chemistry that studies the structure, properties, composition, reactions, and synthesis of carbon-containing compounds. Carbon’s ability to form four covalent bonds and catenate (form chains with itself) gives rise to millions of organic molecules. These range from simple hydrocarbons like methane (CH₄) to complex biomolecules such as DNA.

In IB and CIE exams, you must recognise that organic compounds also may contain hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, halogens, sulfur, and phosphorus.

2. Functional Groups and Homologous Series |

A functional group is an atom or group of atoms that gives a molecule characteristic chemical properties. Molecules with the same functional group undergo similar reactions. A homologous series is a family of organic compounds with the same general formula, similar chemical properties, and a gradual trend in physical properties. Each successive member differs by a CH₂ unit.

Homologous Series Functional Group General Formula
Alkanes None (only C–C and C–H) CₙH₂ₙ₊₂
Alkenes C=C CₙH₂ₙ
Alcohols –OH (hydroxyl) CₙH₂ₙ₊₁OH
Halogenoalkanes –X (F, Cl, Br, I) CₙH₂ₙ₊₁X
Aldehydes –CHO CₙH₂ₙO
Ketones –CO– CₙH₂ₙO
Carboxylic Acids –COOH CₙH₂ₙ₊₁COOH

This table is essential; exam questions often require you to identify a functional group from a displayed formula and predict its chemistry.

3. IUPAC Nomenclature Basics | IUPAC

The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) system provides a systematic way to name organic compounds. The basic steps: identify the longest continuous carbon chain (parent chain), number the chain to give the lowest possible numbers to substituents and functional groups, name the substituents as prefixes, and combine with the suffix indicating the principal functional group.

Examples: CH₃CH₂CH₂OH is propan-1-ol (the hydroxyl group is on carbon 1). CH₃CHBrCH₃ is 2-bromopropane.

For alkenes, the double bond is indicated by the suffix ‘-ene’ with the lowest-numbered carbon of the double bond. For multiple identical substituents, use di-, tri-, tetra-.

IB and CIE both emphasise correct naming of up to six-carbon alkanes, alkenes, alcohols, halogenoalkanes, aldehydes, ketones, and carboxylic acids.

4. Structural Isomerism |

Structural isomers have the same molecular formula but different structural arrangements of atoms. There are three main types: chain isomerism (different carbon skeletons), position isomerism (same functional
