Supply Chain: Key Exam Points |

📚 Supply Chain: Key Exam Points |

A supply chain is the network of businesses, people, activities, information and resources involved in creating and delivering a product or service from the initial supplier to the final customer. For IGCSE Business Studies, understanding the supply chain means recognising how raw materials are transformed into finished goods and how each link adds value while managing costs, time and quality. This article unpacks the key exam points you need to master.

1. What is a Supply Chain? |

A supply chain covers every stage from sourcing raw materials to delivering the final product to consumers. It typically includes suppliers, manufacturers, distributors, retailers and customers. Effective coordination of these stages ensures that the right product reaches the right place at the right time.

In IGCSE exams, you need to be able to define the supply chain and identify its main links. Questions often ask you to draw or interpret a simple supply chain diagram, showing the flow of goods, services and information in both directions.

2. Key Stages of the Supply Chain |

The typical supply chain for a physical product includes procurement (buying raw materials), production (manufacturing), distribution (warehousing and transport), and retail (selling to end users). Each stage adds value but also incurs costs, so businesses aim to make every link as efficient as possible.

For a service business, the supply chain may look different but still involves suppliers, the service provider and the customer. For example, an airline’s supply chain includes fuel suppliers, aircraft manufacturers, catering and ground handling.

  • Procurement / 采购
  • Operations / 运营
  • Outbound logistics /
  • Marketing and sales /
  • After-sales service /

3. The Role of Logistics |

Logistics refers to the detailed planning, organisation and management of the movement and storage of goods, services and related information throughout the supply chain. It includes transportation, warehousing, inventory control and order fulfilment.

Good logistics can reduce delivery times, lower stock-holding costs and improve customer satisfaction. In exams, you may be asked to explain how a business can use logistics to gain a competitive advantage, for example by offering faster delivery than rivals.

4. Inventory Management |

Inventory (or stock) includes raw materials, work-in-progress and finished goods. Managing inventory involves deciding how much stock to hold at each stage to meet demand without tying up too much working capital.

Key terms include buffer inventory (minimum stock level), reorder level and lead time. Students should be able to interpret a stock control diagram and calculate the reorder quantity, lead time and buffer stock from given data.

Reorder level = (average daily usage × lead time) + buffer stock

Too much inventory increases costs (storage, insurance, obsolescence); too little can lead to stock-outs and lost sales. Just-in-time (JIT) is a method of holding minimal stock, which is covered in detail separately.

5. Supply Chain Management (SCM) |

Supply chain management is the strategic coordination of all activities involved in sourcing, procurement, conversion and logistics to maximise customer value and achieve a sustainable competitive advantage. It focuses on the whole network rather than individual parts.

Benefits of effective SCM include lower costs, higher speed to market, better quality and more innovation. CIE exams often ask you to evaluate the impact of good SCM on a business’s profitability and reputation.

6. Just-in-Time (JIT) Production |

JIT is a pull-based system where materials arrive exactly when they are needed in the production process, eliminating the need for large buffer stocks. It was pioneered by Toyota and relies on close coordination with reliable suppliers.

Advantages of JIT include reduced inventory costs, less waste, improved cash flow and greater production flexibility. However, it also carries risks: any disruption in supply, such as a transport strike or a natural disaster, can halt the entire production line.

Little room for error or delay / 几乎没有犯错或延误的空间

7. Supplier Relationships and Choice |

Choosing the right supplier is critical. Businesses evaluate suppliers based on price, quality, reliability, delivery speed and ethical standards. A close, long-term relationship can lead to better communication and collaborative problem-solving.

In the exam, you might be asked to justify why a business would use multiple suppliers rather than a single source. Reasons include reducing risk of dependency, encouraging price competition and ensuring continuity of supply.

8. Global Supply Chains and Offshoring |

Many businesses operate global supply chains, sourcing materials from countries where costs are lower or where specific skills are available. Offshoring means relocating production to another country, often to reduce labour costs.

Global supply chains can offer significant cost savings, but they also introduce additional complexity, such as longer lead times, cultural and language barriers, exchange rate fluctuations and ethical concerns around working conditions.

9. Technology in Supply Chains |

Technology has transformed supply chain operations. Barcode scanning and RFID tags help track goods in real time, while enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems integrate information across different departments and suppliers.

E-commerce platforms allow businesses to share data instantly with suppliers, reducing order processing time. In exams, you could link technology to improved efficiency, lower inventory levels and better customer service.

10. Ethical and Environmental Issues |

Modern supply chains face growing scrutiny over sustainability and ethics. Businesses are expected to ensure fair labour practices, minimise carbon footprints and use sustainable materials throughout their supply network.

Exam questions often explore the tension between cost reduction and ethical responsibility. For instance, a company may save money by using a supplier with poor environmental records, but this could damage its brand image and lead to consumer boycotts.

11. The Impact of Supply Chain Disruptions |

Natural disasters, political instability, strikes and pandemics can disrupt supply chains, leading to delays, higher costs and lost revenue. Businesses need contingency plans, such as alternative suppliers and safety stocks, to manage these risks.

CIE case studies may present a scenario where a business’s key supplier fails to deliver. Students are then asked to analyse the consequences and recommend how the business could have protected itself, touching on concepts like buffer stock, supplier diversification and vertical integration.

12. Vertical Integration and Supply Chain Control |

Vertical integration occurs when a business takes control of more than one stage of the supply chain. Backward integration means acquiring a supplier; forward integration means acquiring a distributor or retailer.

This strategy can give a business greater control over quality, costs and delivery times. However, it may require large capital investment and reduce flexibility. Exam questions typically require a balanced evaluation of the pros and cons in a given context.
