1. Basic Economic Concepts |
Scarcity: The condition in which our wants are greater than the limited resources available to satisfy them. Scarcity forces individuals and societies to make choices and face trade-offs.
Opportunity Cost: The value of the next best alternative forgone when a decision is made. It represents the true cost of any choice, not just monetary expense.
Production Possibilities Frontier (PPF): A curve depicting the maximum feasible combinations of two goods that an economy can produce given fixed resources and technology. Points on the curve are efficient, inside are inefficient, and outside are unattainable.
Marginal Analysis: The examination of the additional benefits of an activity compared to the additional costs incurred. Optimal decisions are made where marginal benefit equals marginal cost.
Ceteris Paribus: A Latin phrase meaning ‘all other things being equal’. It is used in economics to isolate the relationship between two variables by holding other influences constant.
2. Supply and Demand |
Law of Demand: As the price of a good increases, the quantity demanded decreases, ceteris paribus. This inverse relationship is shown by a downward-sloping demand curve.
Law of Supply: As the price of a good increases, the quantity supplied increases, ceteris paribus. This direct relationship produces an upward-sloping supply curve.
Market Equilibrium: The point where quantity demanded equals quantity supplied at a given price. There is no shortage or surplus, and the market clears.
Shortage: A situation where quantity demanded exceeds quantity supplied at the current price. It typically occurs when the price is below equilibrium, creating upward pressure on price.
Surplus: A situation where quantity supplied exceeds quantity demanded at the current price. It occurs when the price is above equilibrium, putting downward pressure on price.
3. Elasticity | 弹性
Price Elasticity of Demand (PED): A measure of how responsive quantity demanded is to a change in price. Calculated as % change in quantity demanded divided by % change in price. Demand is elastic if |PED| > 1, inelastic if |PED| < 1, and unit elastic if |PED| = 1.
Price Elasticity of Demand = %ΔQd / %ΔP
Total Revenue Test: A method to determine elasticity by observing how total revenue changes when price changes. If price and total revenue move in opposite directions, demand is elastic; if they move in the same direction, demand is inelastic.
Income Elasticity of Demand (YED): Measures the responsiveness of demand to a change in consumer income. Normal goods have positive YED; inferior goods have negative YED. Luxury goods have YED > 1.

Price Elasticity of Supply (PES): The responsiveness of quantity supplied to a price change. It depends on the flexibility of producers to alter production.
4. Consumer Choice and Utility |
Utility: The satisfaction or pleasure derived from consuming a good or service. It is a theoretical measure used to model consumer behaviour.
Marginal Utility (MU): The additional utility gained from consuming one more unit of a good. It is central to understanding consumer equilibrium.
Law of Diminishing Marginal Utility: As a consumer consumes additional units of a good, the marginal utility from each extra unit eventually declines. This explains the downward slope of the demand curve.
Consumer Equilibrium: The point where a consumer maximizes total utility given a budget constraint. For two goods, it occurs when MU per dollar spent is equal for all goods: MUx/Px = MUy/Py.
MUx / Px = MUy / Py
MUx / Px = MUy / Py
Budget Constraint: The limit on the consumption bundles that a consumer can afford. It is determined by income and the prices of goods, and graphically shown as the budget line.
5. Production and Costs |
Short Run: A period of time in which at least one factor of production is fixed. Firms can vary output only by changing variable inputs like labour.
Long Run: A time horizon long enough for all factors of production to be variable. Firms can adjust all inputs and enter or exit the industry.
Marginal Product (MP): The additional output produced when one more unit of a variable input is employed. It initially rises but eventually falls due to diminishing marginal returns.

Diminishing Marginal Returns: The principle that as additional units of a variable input are added to fixed inputs, the marginal product of the variable input will eventually decline. This occurs in the short run.
Average Total Cost (ATC): Total cost divided by the quantity of output. It typically has a U-shaped curve, reflecting spreading fixed costs and then diminishing returns. ATC = AFC + AVC.
ATC = AFC + AVC。

Price Taker: A firm that must accept the equilibrium market price; it cannot influence the price by its own output decisions. The demand curve facing a perfectly competitive firm is perfectly elastic (horizontal).
Shut-Down Point: The short-run situation where a firm’s total revenue just covers its variable costs, or where price equals minimum average variable cost (P = min AVC). If price falls below AVC, the firm should shut down temporarily.
Long-Run Equilibrium in Perfect Competition: Occurs when firms earn zero economic profit (normal profit), meaning price equals the minimum of ATC (P = min ATC). No incentive for entry or exit exists.

Barriers to Entry: Obstacles that prevent new firms from entering an industry, such as patents, control of essential resources, government licences, and economies of scale.
Natural Monopoly: A monopoly that arises because a single firm can supply the entire market at a lower cost than two or more firms could, due to large fixed costs and economies of scale. Often regulated by government.
Price Maker: A firm with market power that can influence the price of its product by adjusting output. A monopolist faces a downward-sloping demand curve and must lower price to sell more.
Deadweight Loss under Monopoly: The loss of total surplus (consumer plus producer surplus) compared to the competitive equilibrium. Monopoly output is lower and price is higher, creating inefficiency.
8. Oligopoly and Monopolistic Competition |
Oligopoly: A market dominated by a few large firms, where each firm’s decisions depend on the actions of rivals. Products may be identical or differentiated, and barriers to entry are significant.

Monopolistic Competition: A market structure with many firms selling differentiated products and few barriers to entry. Firms have some price-setting power, but long-run economic profit is zero due to free entry.
Excess Capacity: In monopolistic competition, firms produce at an output less than the minimum ATC output in the long run. This means the firm does not achieve full productive efficiency, leaving room to produce more at lower average cost.
9. Factor Markets |
Derived Demand: The demand for a factor of production (e.g., labour) that stems from the demand for the final goods and services the factor helps produce. If product demand rises, factor demand shifts right.
Marginal Revenue Product (MRP): The additional revenue generated by employing one more unit of a factor, calculated as marginal product times marginal revenue. For a perfectly competitive labour market, MRP = MP x P. The firm hires until MRP equals the wage.
MRP = MP × MR
MRP = MP × MR
Marginal Factor Cost (MFC): The additional cost of hiring one more unit of a factor. In a perfectly competitive labour market, MFC equals the wage rate. A monopsonist faces an upward-sloping supply curve and MFC exceeds the wage.
Least-Cost Combination of Inputs: To minimize the cost of producing a given output, a firm allocates spending so that the marginal product per dollar spent is equal across all inputs: MPₐ/Pₐ = MPₙ/Pₙ.
10. Market Failure and Government Intervention |
Externality: A side effect of production or consumption that affects third parties not directly involved in the transaction. Negative externalities (e.g., pollution) lead to overproduction; positive externalities (e.g., education) lead to underproduction without intervention.
Public Good: A good that is non-rival (one person’s consumption does not reduce availability for others) and non-excludable (no one can be prevented from using it). National defence and street lighting are classic examples.
Free Rider Problem: The tendency for individuals to enjoy the benefits of a public good without paying for it, leading to under-provision by private markets. Government provision is a common solution.
Pigouvian Tax: A tax levied on activities that generate negative externalities, intended to internalise the external cost. It shifts the supply curve leftward, reducing output to the socially optimal level.
Lorenz Curve and Gini Coefficient: The Lorenz curve shows the cumulative distribution of income among a population; the Gini coefficient measures inequality based on the area between the Lorenz curve and the line of perfect equality. A higher Gini indicates greater inequality.
