📚 AQA Year 7 Philosophy: Quick Reference Guide to Formulas and Theorems | AQA

Philosophy might not be full of mathematical formulas, but it has its own set of rules, patterns, and powerful ideas – we can call them ‘philosophical formulas’ or ‘thought theorems’. This quick reference guide collects the key logic structures, ethical principles, and argument blueprints that Year 7 students encounter in the AQA syllabus. Use these to sharpen your reasoning and build stronger arguments.

1. What is Philosophy? |

Philosophy is the activity of asking fundamental questions about existence, knowledge, values, reason, and language, and trying to answer them using careful reasoning rather than experiments or faith alone.

The ‘formula’ of philosophical thinking can be simplified as: Question → Reason → Analyse → Conclude (tentatively).

2. The Formula of an Argument: Premises and Conclusion |

Every philosophical argument has a basic structure: one or more premises (reasons) that support a conclusion (what you are trying to prove). The formula is Premise ₁ (P₁), Premise ₂ (P₂), … therefore Conclusion (C).

Example: P₁: All humans are mortal. P₂: Socrates is a human. Therefore, C: Socrates is mortal. This is a valid deductive argument.

3. Deductive Logic Theorem: If…Then…

Deductive arguments aim to guarantee the truth of the conclusion if the premises are true. The most common form is modus ponens: If P, then Q. P is true. Therefore, Q is true. The formula: (P → Q), P ⊢ Q.

Another valid form, modus tollens, works backwards: If P, then Q. Q is false. Therefore, P is false. (P → Q), ¬Q ⊢ ¬P.

(P → Q),¬Q ⊢ ¬P。

4. Inductive Reasoning Formula: Pattern and Prediction |

Inductive reasoning moves from specific observations to general conclusions. The formula is: Observed pattern in sample → Generalisation to whole class → Prediction. It does not guarantee truth, only probability.

Example: Every swan I have seen is white. Therefore, all swans are probably white. (A single black swan would falsify this.)

5. The Socratic Method: Question Everything |

Socrates used a formula of systematic questioning to examine ideas and expose inconsistencies. The recipe: Ask a definition → Test with counter-example → Refine definition → Repeat until clear or stuck.

This method shows that wisdom often begins with admitting what we do not know: ‘I know that I am intelligent because I know that I know nothing.’

6. Ethics Formula: The Golden Rule |

One of the simplest ethical guidelines found across cultures: ‘Treat others as you would like to be treated.’ In philosophical form: Action A is permissible if you would rationally will that everyone acts in the same way towards you in similar circumstances.

This reciprocity formula is a cornerstone of many moral and religious systems.

7. Utilitarianism Theorem: The Greatest Happiness Principle |

Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill proposed a formula to decide right and wrong: An action is right if it produces the greatest amount of pleasure (or happiness) for the greatest number of people. Summarised as: Maximise utility = maximise pleasure minus pain.

Hedonic Calculus: When comparing possible actions, consider intensity, duration, certainty, propinquity (how near), fecundity (will it lead to more pleasure?), purity (free from pain?), and extent (how many people?).

8. Kant’s Categorical Imperative: Universal Law Formula |

Immanuel Kant offered a very different formula: Act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law. Test your action: if everyone did it, would it still make sense, or would it lead to a contradiction?

A second formulation: Always treat humanity, whether in yourself or in another, never simply as a means, but always at the same time as an end. This forbids using people merely as tools.

9. The Mind-Body Problem: Dualism vs. Materialism |

Two competing formulas for the relationship between mind and body: Substance Dualism (Descartes): Mind and body are two fundamentally different substances; mind is non‑physical thinking stuff, body is physical extension in space. Materialism (modern science): Mental states are physical states of the brain; the mind is what the brain does.

Key puzzle: how can a non‑physical mind cause physical actions? This is the interaction problem, still debated.

10. Knowledge Formula: Justified True Belief |

Since Plato, many philosophers have defined knowledge using a three‑part formula: K = JTB (Justified True Belief). To know that P, (1) P must be true, (2) you must believe that P, and (3) you must have good reasons (justification) for believing P.

Gettier problems challenge this formula by showing cases where someone has a justified true belief but still seems not to know. The search for a fourth condition continues.

11. The Ontological Argument: A Logical Proof for God? |

Anselm’s formula attempts to prove God’s existence from the very definition of God: God is that than which nothing greater can be conceived. If God exists only in the mind, a greater being could be conceived (one that exists in reality too). Therefore, God must exist in reality.

Gaunilo’s reply used the perfect island parody, and Kant argued that existence is not a predicate – adding ‘exists’ to a definition does not add any real property. The debate continues.

12. The Problem of Evil: A Logical Challenge |

For theists, the existence of evil and suffering seems to contradict the existence of an all‑powerful, all‑knowing, all‑good God. The logical formula is: If God is all‑powerful, He can prevent evil. If God is all‑good, He would want to prevent evil. Evil exists. Therefore, such a God does not exist.

Common responses include the free will defence (evil arises from misuse of free will, and free will is a greater good) and the soul‑making theodicy (suffering builds character and brings us closer to God).
