📚 Case Studies in Psychology: A Practical Guide for Young Analysts |

Welcome to your psychology case study workout! Case studies are like detective stories – they allow us to investigate real or realistic examples of behaviour and use psychological ideas to explain what is happening. In this article, you will explore what case studies are, why psychologists love them, and most importantly, how to analyse one step by step. You will work through several cases covering memory, social influence, attachment, and learning. By the end, you will be able to think like a true psychology detective.

1. What Is a Case Study in Psychology? |

A case study is an in‑depth investigation of a single person, group, or event. Unlike experiments that test many people, a case study focuses on rich, detailed information about one particular situation. Psychologists use interviews, observations, and records to build a complete picture.

For example, a psychologist might study a boy named Sam who developed a sudden fear of buttons. By talking to Sam, his parents, and observing him, the psychologist can trace when the fear started and what keeps it going. Case studies help us understand rare or complex behaviours that experiments cannot easily capture.

2. Why Do Psychologists Use Case Studies? |

Case studies are powerful because they provide a deep understanding of an individual’s experience. They are especially useful when studying unique conditions – for instance, a person with an extraordinary memory or a child raised in isolation. Through detailed analysis, psychologists can generate new theories or refine existing ones.

Another advantage is that case studies often use real‑life situations, making them highly relevant. However, we must be cautious: findings from one person may not apply to everyone. That is why case studies are often followed by larger experiments to test ideas more widely.

3. The Structure of a Case Study Analysis |

When you analyse a case study, it helps to follow a clear framework. We can remember it as D‑A‑T‑E: Describe, Apply theories, Think of alternative explanations, and Evaluate.

  • Describe: Summarise the key details of the case – who, what, where, when.
  • Apply theories: Link the behaviour to psychological concepts (e.g. memory models, conditioning, attachment types).
  • Think of alternatives: Could another explanation fit? Consider biological, cognitive, or social factors.
  • Evaluate: Discuss strengths and weaknesses of the explanation. Is the evidence strong? Are there any ethical issues?

4. Case Study 1: The Forgotten Homework – Memory in Action |

Meet Tom, a Year 7 student. Every evening he packs his schoolbag carefully, but three times this week he arrived at school without his science homework. Tom insists he did put the homework in his bag the night before. When his mum checks his room, she often finds the completed homework lying on his desk. Tom feels frustrated because he genuinely believed he had packed it.

Let’s analyse this case using the multi‑store model of memory. Tom probably paid attention to the homework at the time of packing (sensory memory), but the information was not successfully encoded into short‑term memory or transferred to long‑term storage. Perhaps he was distracted by his phone, so the action was never properly stored. According to the model, if information is not rehearsed, it decays quickly.

Another factor could be retrieval failure. Tom’s memory of packing might be there, but he cannot access it because there are no cues (like seeing the homework in the bag) to trigger the memory. This shows how encoding and retrieval work together in memory.

Your turn: Suggest one way Tom could improve the encoding of his packing routine using a memory strategy such as repetition or making a checklist.

5. Case Study 2: The Power of the Group – Conformity |

Imagine a classroom experiment. A student, Mia, is asked to look at three lines on a board and say which one matches the ‘standard line’. She knows the correct answer. But before she speaks, the four other students in the room (who are actually acting) each confidently give the same wrong answer. Mia looks uncertain, pauses, and then agrees with the group’s wrong answer.

This case is based on Asch’s conformity research. Even when the correct answer is obvious, the pressure to fit in with the group can lead a person to give an incorrect response. Psychologists call this normative social influence – the desire to be accepted and avoid rejection.

Mia’s behaviour could also involve informational social influence. She might have doubted her own judgement and thought, ‘If so many people see it differently, perhaps I am wrong.’ This often happens in ambiguous situations, but here the task was very clear, making informational influence less likely.

Evaluate: One weakness of this case is that it was an artificial setup. Would Mia behave the same way with her real friends in a low‑stakes situation?

6. Case Study 3: The Crying Baby – Attachment Styles |

Eight‑month‑old Leo and his mother enter a playroom. Leo happily explores the toys while Mum watches. When a stranger enters, Leo looks at Mum but continues playing. Later, Mum leaves the room. Leo becomes upset, cries, and will not be comforted by the stranger. When Mum returns, Leo reaches out and quickly calms down in her arms.

This case illustrates Mary Ainsworth’s ‘Strange Situation’ and shows a secure attachment. Leo uses his mother as a secure base from which to explore. He shows distress when she leaves (separation anxiety) and is easily soothed upon reunion. This pattern suggests his caregiver is sensitive and responsive to his needs.

Let’s compare this with other attachment types using a simple table:

Explores freely, may cry when caregiver leaves, happy upon return.
Little exploration, ignores caregiver, shows no strong emotion when left or reunited.
Clingy, very upset when caregiver leaves, resists comfort when they return.

Knowing Leo’s attachment style helps us predict his later social development. Securely attached children often grow up to be more confident and better at forming relationships.

7. Case Study 4: The Fear of Dogs – Classical Conditioning |

Five‑year‑old Ella loved dogs until a neighbour’s dog jumped on her, barking loudly and pushing her over. Although she was not badly hurt, she was very frightened. Now, whenever she sees a dog, even a small, quiet one, her heart races, she starts to tremble, and she wants to run away.

This is a clear example of classical conditioning discovered by Ivan Pavlov. Before the incident, the dog (neutral stimulus) did not trigger fear. The loud bark and push (unconditioned stimulus) naturally caused a fear response (unconditioned response). Through association, the dog became a conditioned stimulus that now produces a conditioned fear response.

This learned fear generalised: Ella now fears all dogs, not just the one that scared her. Psychologists call this stimulus generalisation. If a dog bark is similar to the original fright, it triggers the same reaction, even though the new dog is harmless.

Application: How could we help Ella? One method is systematic desensitisation – gradually exposing her to dogs in a safe, controlled way while teaching relaxation techniques.

8. Your Turn: Practising Analysis with a New Case |

Read the following case and answer the questions using the D‑A‑T‑E approach. Twelve‑year‑old Amir used to enjoy maths, but after a strict teacher humiliated him in front of the class for a mistake, he now feels sick every morning before maths. He often asks to go to the nurse to avoid the lesson. His grades have dropped, and he says he is ‘just bad at maths’.

  • Describe the key details of the case.
  • Apply a psychological theory – think about classical conditioning, memory, or self‑esteem.
  • Think of an alternative explanation – could puberty, peer pressure, or sleep problems play a role?
  • Evaluate: what are the strengths of your explanation? What evidence would you need?

There is no single right answer – the goal is to practise linking evidence to theory. You might identify that the teacher’s humiliation (unconditioned stimulus) became associated with the maths classroom (conditioned stimulus), triggering anxiety. Alternatively, negative self‑talk could be reinforcing a fixed mindset, making Amir avoid challenges.

9. Common Mistakes to Avoid in Case Study Analysis |

It is easy to jump to conclusions when analysing a case. One frequent mistake is over‑generalising: assuming that because one person reacted a certain way, everyone would react the same. Remember, case studies are deep but narrow – they do not always represent the wider population.

Another pitfall is ignoring alternative explanations. For instance, in the forgotten homework case, we focused on memory, but Tom might have been too tired or simply unmotivated. Always ask, ‘What else could explain this behaviour?’

Finally, avoid subjective bias. Stick to the evidence described in the case and use specific details to support your points rather than relying on your own feelings about the person.

10. Conclusion: Becoming a Psychology Detective |

Case study analysis is a skill that grows with practice. Every new case is a puzzle waiting to be solved using the tools of psychology. By carefully describing, applying theories, considering alternatives, and evaluating, you develop critical thinking that goes far beyond the classroom.

Keep practising with everyday situations – why did your friend react angrily to a joke? What makes a younger sibling cling to a parent? The more you ask ‘why’ and seek evidence‑based answers, the more you will think like a psychologist. Well done on completing this workout!
