📚 Case Study Analysis in Action |

In Year 7 OCR Business Studies, you will often be asked to analyse a short case study and suggest solutions. This skill is not just about remembering facts — it is about applying what you have learned to a real-world business situation. In this article, we will walk through a practical case study step by step, showing you exactly how to break down a scenario, identify key issues and build a solid, well-reasoned answer.

1. What Is a Case Study? |

A case study is a detailed story about a real or imagined business situation. It gives you background information, data and sometimes problems that need solving.

In your exam or homework, you will read a short text and then answer questions using your business knowledge. The case study helps you practise thinking like an entrepreneur or a business advisor.

Good answers always refer back to the case details — you should never just list textbook theories without linking them to the specific business described.

2. Our Sample Case: Ella’s Eco Bags |

To make things clear, we will analyse a simple business idea. Imagine a Year 7 student called Ella. Her school has banned single-use plastic bags, so many students need a reusable bag for books, PE kit and lunch.

Ella wants to sell eco-friendly cotton bags. She has saved £50 from her pocket money to start the venture.

She can buy plain eco-bags online for £3.50 each. She will paint her own designs on them and sell at school events and during lunch breaks for £6 per bag.

3. Step 1 – Identify the Business Type |

Ella is going to operate as a sole trader. This is the simplest form of business ownership, where one person runs the business on their own.

A sole trader keeps all the profits but also has unlimited liability, meaning if the business runs up debts, Ella could be personally responsible for paying them.

For her small-scale project, this is the most realistic structure. She does not need complicated paperwork and can start trading straight away.

4. Step 2 – Define Business Objectives |

Every business needs clear objectives. Ella could set a SMART target: sell 50 bags within the first three months and make a profit of at least £100.

SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound. Her goal meets all these criteria: it has a number, a deadline and is realistic given her small start.

Beyond profit, she might also have social objectives, such as reducing plastic waste in her school community.

5. Step 3 – Know the Target Market |

Ella’s primary target market is students in Years 7–9. They need affordable, stylish bags to carry their belongings around school.

Secondary targets include teachers and parents who visit the school for events or meetings. These groups may be willing to pay a little extra for a unique, hand-decorated bag.

Understanding her customers’ age, tastes and spending power helps Ella design products that will actually sell.

6. Step 4 – Analyse the Competition |

Right now, no one else is selling eco-bags at her school, but there is still indirect competition. Some students already use old rucksacks, or parents buy cheap plastic folders from supermarkets.

Ella’s main competitive advantage is that her bags are custom-designed and support the school’s plastic-free policy. She could also offer personalisation — writing names or drawing favourite characters.

By keeping an eye on what others are doing, she can adjust her pricing and promotion to stay ahead.

The marketing mix has four elements: Product, Price, Place and Promotion. Let us apply each one to Ella’s business.

Product: Hand-painted cotton eco-bags, available in two sizes (small for lunch, large for books). They are reusable, washable and plastic-free.

Price: £6 per bag. This covers the £3.50 cost and leaves a £2.50 margin. She might introduce a ‘buy two for £10’ deal to encourage larger purchases.

Place: She will sell at the school fete, open evenings and during lunch breaks from a portable stand in the dining hall.

Promotion: Word-of-mouth, posters on noticeboards, short videos on the school’s social media page (with permission) and a launch day discount.

8. Step 6 – Work Out the Finances |

With her £50 starting capital, Ella can buy 14 bags (£3.50 × 14 = £49). This leaves £1 spare.

If she sells all 14 bags at £6 each, her total revenue would be £84. Her total costs would be £49, giving her a profit of £35.

Profit = Revenue − Total Costs = £84 − £49 = £35

To find how many bags she must sell just to cover costs, we calculate the break-even point. Each bag’s fixed costs here are negligible, so every bag sold after paying for its own purchase contributes to profit.

Break-even volume ≈ Total Fixed Costs ÷ (Selling Price − Variable Cost per unit)

Since her fixed costs are minimal (poster paper, a few pens), she breaks even almost from the first sale — a very low-risk start.

9. Step 7 – Identify Key Stakeholders |

Stakeholders are any individuals or groups that have an interest in the business. For Ella’s Eco Bags, the main stakeholders include:

Ella herself — she wants profit, a good reputation and a sense of achievement. Her parents — they may worry about schoolwork being affected and provide emotional support.

Customers — they want stylish, durable bags at a fair price. The school — it wants to promote eco-initiatives and ensure any trading follows school rules.

Suppliers — they depend on regular orders and prompt payments. Considering all stakeholders helps Ella make balanced decisions.

10. Step 8 – Evaluate Risks and Opportunities |

Every business faces uncertainties. The biggest risk for Ella is low demand — maybe students do not like her designs or prefer cheaper alternatives.

Another risk is seasonality: bag sales might drop during exam weeks when there are no events.

On the opportunity side, the school’s eco-campaign could boost interest dramatically. Word could spread quickly, leading to orders from older year groups and staff.

If the project succeeds, Ella could expand her range to include pencil cases or tote bags with different designs, turning a pocket-money project into a real micro-business.

11. Step 9 – Make a Justified Recommendation |

After weighing the evidence, a sensible recommendation would be: Ella should go ahead with the trial of 14 bags but closely monitor customer feedback.

She should keep a simple record of which designs sell best and ask buyers what they would pay for customisation. This data will inform her next batch order.

To reduce risk, she could take pre-orders — collecting money before ordering the bags. This way, she avoids leftover stock and does not use all her savings in one go.

Overall, the business is feasible, low-cost and aligned with the school’s values, making it a perfect first enterprise.

12. Practice Case: “TechTutor” by Alex |

Now it is your turn. Read the short scenario below and try to apply the same step-by-step approach.

Alex is a Year 7 student who is brilliant at coding and fixing tablet computers. He wants to offer a “TechTutor” service after school, charging £5 for a 20-minute session to help classmates with basic coding or device problems.

He has no start-up money but can use the school library free of charge. His target customers are students who struggle with ICT homework and parents who need help setting up learning apps.

Identify the business type, set a SMART objective for Alex, analyse his marketing mix and calculate how many sessions he needs to run to earn £30 profit if his only cost is £2 per week for advertising posters.

Write a short paragraph recommending whether Alex should start his business, giving at least two reasons linked to the case.
