1. Understanding the Case Study Approach |
A case study in geography is a detailed investigation of a real-world place or issue. It is not simply a list of facts – you need to show that you can describe the location, explain the physical and human processes at work, and then evaluate the actions people have taken. Always remember the three key stages: describe, explain and evaluate. For example, instead of saying ‘erosion is happening’, you would describe the type of cliff, explain how wave action undercuts the rock, and evaluate whether a sea wall is the best solution.
Using evidence is essential. In both homework and SQA assessments, you are expected to support your points with specific information such as data, place names, dates or diagrams. When you complete a case study like the one below, highlight the key statistics and try to visualise the processes – imagine what it would be like to stand on that beach.
2. Our Practice Case Study: Seaburn’s Eroding Coastline |
The fictional town of Seaburn is located on the east coast of Scotland, facing the North Sea. Its coastline consists of soft boulder clay cliffs, which rise about 15 metres above a narrow sandy beach. Over the last 50 years, the average rate of cliff retreat has been 1.8 metres per year, but recent storms have pushed that to over 3 metres in a single winter. Several homes and a historic lighthouse are now within 10 metres of the cliff edge, and the main coastal road had to be closed twice last year due to cliff falls.
Seaburn has a population of 2,400 people and relies on tourism and fishing. The beach attracts over 30,000 visitors each summer. However, if erosion continues unchecked, not only will properties be lost, but the beach itself could become too narrow for safe access, harming the local economy.
3. Physical Geography Context |
The geology of the Seaburn cliffs is dominated by glacial till – a mixture of clay, sand and stones deposited during the last ice age. This material is easily eroded because it is unconsolidated and has little resistance to wave attack. The prevailing wind direction is from the northeast, generating powerful fetch distances of over 800 kilometres across the North Sea. Waves can reach heights of 4–5 metres during winter storms, striking the base of the cliff with immense hydraulic pressure and abrasion from pebbles.
Another physical factor is weathering. In winter, water seeps into cracks, freezes and expands (freeze-thaw action), weakening the rock even before waves reach it. Summer heat can dry out the clay, causing it to crack and crumble. These weathering processes prepare the cliff face for rapid marine erosion.
4. Human Geography Influences |
Human activities have made the situation worse. In the 1980s, sand was extracted from the neighbouring beach for construction projects, reducing the volume of sediment available for natural beach replenishment. A small harbour wall built to protect fishing boats has interrupted longshore drift, causing sand to build up on one side while starving the beach in front of Seaburn of fresh material. Without a healthy beach to absorb wave energy, the cliffs are fully exposed.
Furthermore, the construction of housing and the coastal road has concentrated valuable assets near the edge. Drainage from these developments also channels additional water over the cliff face, accelerating gullying and slumping. Students should note how human decisions interact with physical processes to create a riskier environment.
5. Identifying Causes and Processes |
When asked to identify causes in a case study, use a clear structure: primary physical causes, secondary physical causes, and human accelerants. In Seaburn, the primary cause is the weak boulder clay geology. Secondary physical causes include the long fetch and high-energy storm waves. Human accelerants include sand extraction and the harbour wall disrupting longshore drift.
You could represent these connections using a simple cause-and-effect chain: Weak geology → wave attack → cliff collapse. Or, more fully: Soft clay cliffs + high energy waves + loss of beach sediment = rapid coastal retreat. Practise drawing such chains as part of your revision.
6. Environmental and Social Impacts |
Erosion at Seaburn has led to the loss of over 15 metres of cliff-top land in the last decade. Salt marsh habitats behind the beach have been squeezed, reducing biodiversity. Socially, residents face the stress of possible evacuation, property values have plummeted, and the lighthouse – a symbol of the town’s heritage – is at imminent risk. The closure of the coastal road has increased travel times by 20 minutes for commuters and delayed emergency services.
The local council’s report estimated the economic cost of road closures alone at £250,000 per year. Tourism numbers have dropped by 15% because visitors worry about safety and beach access. These impacts are not evenly felt – elderly residents on fixed incomes find it harder to relocate. Always look for both economic and social dimensions when evaluating impacts.
7. Exploring Management Strategies |
Coastal managers typically consider four options: hold the line, advance the line, managed realignment, or do nothing. For Seaburn, the council has proposed three possible approaches. The following table summarises them.
| Strategy | Description | Advantages | Disadvantages |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hard engineering (sea wall) | Build a curved concrete wall at the base of the cliff. | Very effective at stopping erosion; protects properties immediately. | Expensive (estimated £4 million); can reflect wave energy and scour the beach; visually intrusive. |
| Soft engineering (beach nourishment) | Add sand to rebuild the beach and replant dune grasses. | Looks natural; provides habitat; cheaper in the short term (£500k). | Needs constant maintenance; sand may be washed away in storms; interrupts longshore drift if not carefully planned. |
| Managed retreat | Move homes and the lighthouse inland; allow the cliff to erode naturally. | Long-term sustainable; creates new habitat; no ongoing maintenance costs. | Very unpopular with residents; loss of farmland; emotional distress; compensation disputes. |
When evaluating these, you must consider cost, effectiveness, environmental impact, and community reaction. There is never a perfect solution – geography is about weighing trade-offs.
8. Role-Play: Stakeholder Perspectives |
Understanding different viewpoints is a vital skill. Imagine you are attending a town hall meeting in Seaburn. A local homeowner says, “I’ve lived here for 40 years. My house can’t be moved – we need a sea wall now!” A conservationist argues, “Concrete walls destroy the natural beauty and harm wildlife. Let nature take its course.” A council finance officer states, “A sea wall costs £4 million. We would have to raise council tax or cut other services.”
Your job as a geographer is to consider all these voices. Which group is most vulnerable? Are there compromises? For instance, some residents might accept a smaller rock revetment with beach nourishment as a middle ground. Write down how you would respond to each stakeholder in a balanced paragraph – this is excellent preparation for evaluation questions.
9. Reaching a Balanced Conclusion |
A strong conclusion avoids simply saying “Option B is best”. Instead, you should recognise the complexity and come to a reasoned judgement. In Seaburn, while a sea wall would provide immediate protection for the most threatened houses, its high cost and negative environmental effects make it hard to justify for the entire coastline. A combination of managed retreat for the lighthouse (moving it 50 metres inland) and soft engineering to protect the main beach area might offer a more sustainable path.
Remember that geography rarely provides one right answer. SQA examiners are looking for your ability to justify a choice using evidence from the case study. Practise writing a conclusion that begins “Overall, the most appropriate strategy is … because …” and then acknowledges a weakness: “However, this will not satisfy everyone because …”
10. Self-Assessment and Skills Check |
After completing this exercise, use the checklist below to evaluate your learning. Tick each statement you can confidently complete. Ask a partner or teacher to test you verbally on any weak areas.
