📚 Common Misconceptions and Corrections in Year 7 OCR PE | Year 7 OCR
In Year 7 Physical Education, students are introduced to key concepts about health, fitness and skill development. However, many popular beliefs about exercise and training can actually hold back progress or even lead to injury. This article identifies some of the most common misconceptions you may hear in the changing room or on the playground and provides clear, evidence-based corrections to help you train safely and effectively as part of your OCR PE journey.
1. Warming Up Is Just Stretching |
A very common mistake is thinking that touching your toes and holding a few stretches is a proper warm-up. In OCR PE, a warm-up should be made up of three parts: a pulse raiser to increase heart rate and blood flow to muscles, dynamic stretches and mobility exercises that move joints through their full range, and finally sport-specific skill-related practices. Skipping the pulse raiser means your muscles are cold and less elastic, which increases the risk of strains. Dynamic movements like high knees, arm circles and gentle jogging prepare your body for the demands of the main activity much better than standing still and pulling a muscle.
2. Strength Training Is Unsafe for Year 7 Students |
Many people believe that lifting weights at this age will stunt growth or cause injuries. The truth is that appropriate strength training, using body weight, resistance bands or very light dumbbells with proper supervision, is both safe and beneficial for Year 7 students. The OCR syllabus encourages muscular strength and endurance exercises as part of a balanced fitness programme. Bodyweight exercises such as squats, lunges and press-ups help strengthen bones, improve coordination and build a foundation for more advanced movements later on. Heavy maximal lifts are not recommended, but sensible resistance work is perfectly healthy.
3. Being Fit Means You Don’t Need to Warm Up | 身体好就不用热身
Some sporty students assume that because they already play for a team or feel strong, they can skip the warm-up. Fitness level does not replace the physiological need for a gradual increase in body temperature and joint lubrication. Even elite athletes complete a thorough warm-up before every session. Without it, the nervous system is not primed for quick reactions, and the risk of a sudden pull or tear remains. A good warm-up also allows you to mentally focus and switch on the skills you will need, which improves performance in drills and matches.
4. You Should Hold Your Breath During Heavy Exertion |
When trying hard in a strength move or a sprint, some pupils naturally hold their breath. This is a harmful habit because it increases pressure inside the chest and can lead to dizziness or even fainting. In OCR PE, we learn to coordinate breathing with movement: generally exhale on the effort phase and inhale on the recovery phase. For example, when performing a press-up, breathe out as you push away from the floor and breathe in as you lower yourself. Keeping a steady flow of oxygen helps muscles work for longer and maintains blood pressure safely.
5. Static Stretching Before Exercise Prevents Injury |
You will often see people holding long, still stretches before a game. Research now shows that static stretching before activity can temporarily reduce muscle power and does not significantly lower injury risk. The OCR PE approach favours dynamic stretching in the warm-up, such as leg swings, walking lunges and torso twists, which actively prepare muscles for movement. Static stretches, where you hold a position for 15–30 seconds, are best saved for the cool-down, when they help restore muscle length and promote relaxation.
6. More Sweat Means More Calories Burned |
Sweating buckets during a PE lesson does not always mean you have worked harder or burned more body fat. Sweating is simply the body’s cooling system: when your internal temperature rises, sweat glands release moisture that evaporates to cool you down. In hot, humid conditions you will sweat more with less effort, while in cool weather you may hardly sweat during an intense workout. A better way to measure effort in OCR PE is to use the Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE) scale or monitor your heart rate, both of which give a truer picture of intensity.
7. Running Is the Only Way to Improve Cardiovascular Fitness |
While running is a great aerobic activity, it is far from the only way to strengthen your heart and lungs. OCR PE introduces a range of training methods, and any activity that raises your heart rate into the aerobic zone and keeps it there will improve cardiovascular fitness. Swimming, cycling, rowing, skipping, dancing and circuit training are all excellent alternatives. Variety not only reduces boredom but also spreads the load across different muscle groups, lowering the chance of overuse injuries from doing the same movement every day.
8. Eating Lots of Protein Is the Key to Building Muscle |
Protein is certainly important for repairing and building muscle tissue, but simply eating large amounts of protein without the right training and a balanced diet will not turn you into a stronger athlete. Your body needs carbohydrates to fuel high-quality training sessions, healthy fats for hormone function, and vitamins and minerals to support energy release and bone health. In Year 7 OCR PE, we emphasise the importance of the Eatwell Guide and a balanced diet. Muscle growth comes from a combination of appropriate resistance exercise, sufficient total energy intake and rest, with protein playing a supporting role.
9. Girls Will Bulk Up If They Lift Weights |
This myth stops many girls from enjoying the benefits of resistance training. Females generally have much lower levels of testosterone, a hormone that plays a big role in increasing muscle size, so it is very difficult for them to build large, bulky muscles through school PE sessions. Strength exercises help girls develop stronger bones, better posture, and a higher metabolic rate, which can contribute to a lean and toned appearance. OCR PE encourages everyone, regardless of gender, to include strength-based activities twice a week for lifelong health.
10. You Don’t Need to Cool Down After PE |
When the bell goes, it is tempting to simply stop, grab your bag and head to the next lesson. However, missing the cool-down can cause blood to pool in your legs, leading to dizziness, and it allows waste products like lactic acid to remain in muscles, increasing soreness the next day. A proper cool-down, as taught in OCR PE, should include light jogging or walking to gradually lower heart rate, followed by static stretches held for each major muscle group. This practice calms the nervous system, improves flexibility and helps your body recover ready for the next session.
