📚 Common Misconceptions in Year 7 Edexcel Biology and How to Correct Them | Year 7 Edexcel
Many Year 7 students begin their biology journey with brilliant curiosity, but also with a handful of ideas that seem right yet don’t quite match the scientific view. These misconceptions can easily slip into homework or test answers and block deeper understanding. This guide picks out the most frequent errors made by Edexcel Year 7 learners and explains clearly how to replace them with accurate biological thinking.
1. What Living Means vs What Non-living Means | 生物意味着什么 vs 非生物意味着什么
Many pupils use the word ‘alive’ only for animals that move, like dogs or birds. They often think that plants, fungi or bacteria are not really living because they don’t walk or make sounds.
The scientific definition of a living organism is based on seven life processes, often remembered as MRS GREN: Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Growth, Reproduction, Excretion and Nutrition. A mushroom is alive even though it stays in one place, because it respires, grows and reproduces.
Similarly, a flame can move and grow, but it does not contain cells, does not reproduce from genetic material and does not show sensitivity. So it is not alive. Remind yourself: if it lacks even one of the seven processes, it is not a living organism.
2. Respiration Is Not the Same as Breathing |
A common confusion is treating ‘respiration’ and ‘breathing’ as identical words. In everyday English they are used loosely, but in Edexcel Biology they have different meanings.
Breathing is the physical movement of air in and out of the lungs. Respiration is a chemical reaction that happens inside every living cell, releasing energy from glucose. It can be summarised in symbols as: glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water (+ energy).
Many students believe respiration only happens when we are gasping for air. In fact, respiration is continuous in every cell, day and night. Even plants respire all the time, although during the day they also photosynthesise.
3. Plants Make Food Only for Themselves? The Producer Story |
A surprisingly frequent idea is that a plant’s food comes from the soil. Some Year 7 learners picture roots ‘eating’ soil in the same way that an animal swallows food.
The truth is that plants make their own food by photosynthesis, using carbon dioxide from the air, water from the soil and light energy. The glucose produced is then used for respiration, growth and storage. Minerals from the soil help keep the plant healthy, but they are not the main source of food.
In food chains, plants are called producers precisely because they produce the glucose that feeds almost all other life. If you say ‘plants eat soil’, you miss the giant role they play in ecosystems.
4. Cells: All Living Things Are Made of Them, but Not All Cells Look the Same | 细胞:所有生物都由细胞组成,但并非所有细胞长得一样
Some pupils think that because a cell is the basic unit of life, all cells must be identical tiny spheres, like bricks in a wall. Exam sketches often show a generic ‘blob’ for plant cells and animal cells alike.
Animal and plant cells share some parts, such as a nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane and mitochondria. But only plant cells have a rigid cell wall, a large permanent vacuole and chloroplasts. These differences are vital for the plant’s ability to stand upright and capture light.
Another mistake is thinking the cell wall is just an extra ‘bag’ around the cell membrane. It is actually a strong structure made of cellulose that gives support. Try to remember: animal cells never have a cell wall, chloroplasts or a large sap vacuole.
5. The Heart ‘Cleans’ Blood? Understanding the Pump |
A very common myth is that the heart cleans or purifies blood. This is probably because pupils feel their heartbeat and imagine something is being washed inside.
The heart is a twin pump made of muscle; it does not filter anything. Its job is to pump deoxygenated blood to the lungs (where carbon dioxide leaves and oxygen enters) and to pump oxygenated blood to the rest of the body. The real ‘cleaning’ of waste happens mainly in the kidneys and also in the lungs.
When a friend says ‘the heart cleans the blood’, help them by asking: ‘Then what do the kidneys do?’ It’s a good way to link organs to their correct functions.
6. Digestion: From Mouth to Anus, Not Just the Stomach |
For many Year 7 students, ‘digestion’ is something that happens only in the stomach. They picture food being churned with acid and assume the rest of the tube is just a passive pipe.
Digestion actually starts in the mouth, where teeth break food mechanically and enzymes in saliva begin chemical digestion of starch. The stomach continues both mechanical and chemical digestion with muscular churning and protease enzymes. Then the small intestine is where most chemical digestion and absorption of nutrients into the blood occur. The large intestine absorbs water, leaving waste to be egested.
If you think digestion equals stomach, you will miss marks when asked where starch digestion begins or where glucose enters the blood.
7. Variation: Continuous vs Discontinuous – It’s Not All Just ‘Different’ |
When asked to describe variation, pupils often say ‘people are different’ and leave it there. They may also group every trait into the same category without considering how data are plotted.
Continuous variation shows a full range of values, such as height or hand span, and can be displayed as a bell-shaped histogram. Discontinuous variation falls into distinct groups, like blood type or tongue-rolling ability, and is shown with a bar chart of separated categories.
A quick check: If you can be ‘a little bit’ of something, it’s probably continuous. If you are one type or another with no in-between, it’s discontinuous. Using this rule will help you draw the correct graph and earn those marks.
8. Food Chains: The Arrow Means ‘Is Eaten By’, Not ‘Eats’ |
One of the most stubborn errors in ecology is drawing food chain arrows in the wrong direction. Students often point the arrow from the predator to the prey because they think it shows the direction of the predator’s action.
In Edexcel Biology, the arrow always points from the organism being eaten to the organism that eats it, showing the flow of energy. Think of the arrow as saying ‘is eaten by’. So grass → rabbit → fox is correct, because grass is eaten by the rabbit, and the rabbit is eaten by the fox.
Every time you draw a food chain, stop and read the arrow out loud: ‘is eaten by’. If it doesn’t make sense, change it. This habit will save you many marks.
9. Menstruation and Fertilisation Are Not the Same Thing |
At the Year 7 level, students often confuse menstruation (the monthly shedding of the uterus lining) with fertilisation (the joining of egg and sperm). Some even think the period is the body ‘throwing out’ an unfertilised egg in its original form.
Menstruation is the loss of the blood-filled lining of the uterus when fertilisation does not occur. The egg itself is far too tiny to be seen and is not directly noticed during a period. Fertilisation is a separate event that happens inside the fallopian tube; it leads to pregnancy and stops the menstrual cycle for a while.
Simply memorising ‘menstruation = lining lost’ and ‘fertilisation = sperm meets egg’ will clear away much of the confusion early on.
10. Photosynthesis and Respiration Are Opposites? They Are Linked but Not Mirror Images |
Textbooks often place the two equations next to each other: photosynthesis (carbon dioxide + water → glucose + oxygen) and respiration (glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water). This makes students think they are exact opposites happening in the same place.
They are chemically reverse in terms of reactants and products, but they occur in different organelles. Photosynthesis happens only in chloroplasts when light is available. Respiration occurs in mitochondria of plant and animal cells all the time. A plant respires day and night, but it photosynthesises only when there is light.
During the day, a plant may photosynthesise faster than it respires, so it releases oxygen overall. But at night, only respiration occurs, so it takes in oxygen and gives out carbon dioxide. Understanding this timing will stop you from writing that plants only ‘breathe out’ oxygen all the time.
