📚 Core Knowledge Points in Year 7 CAIE Economics | Year 7 CAIE

Welcome to your journey into the world of economics. This article outlines the core knowledge points for Year 7 CAIE Economics, helping you build a strong foundation in understanding how economies work and how we make decisions.

1. What is Economics? |

Economics is the social science that examines how individuals, businesses, and governments make choices to allocate scarce resources to satisfy their unlimited wants.

It helps us understand everyday decisions such as whether to spend or save money, or what goods and services to produce.

Unlike physical sciences, economics focuses on human behaviour and the trade-offs we face.

2. Scarcity and the Basic Economic Problem |

Scarcity is the fundamental economic problem that arises because resources are limited while human wants are virtually limitless.

Because of scarcity, societies must answer three key questions: What to produce? How to produce? For whom to produce?

Scarcity is not the same as a shortage; it is a permanent condition that forces us to prioritise.

3. Opportunity Cost |

Opportunity cost is the value of the next best alternative that is given up when a choice is made.

Opportunity Cost = Value of Next Best Alternative Given Up

For example, if you spend an hour studying economics instead of playing video games, the opportunity cost is the enjoyment you would have gained from gaming.

Recognising opportunity costs helps people and businesses make better economic decisions.

4. Factors of Production |

The resources used to produce goods and services are called factors of production. They are traditionally grouped into four categories.

Factor Description Reward
Land (土地) All natural resources such as oil, water, forests, and minerals.
Labour (劳动力) Human effort, both physical and mental, used in production. Wages/Salaries (工资)
Capital (资本) Man-made goods used to produce other goods, e.g. machinery, tools, buildings.
Enterprise (企业) The ability to combine the other factors, take risks, and innovate.

These factors are scarce, so they must be used efficiently to maximise output.

5. Needs and Wants |

A need is something essential for survival, such as food, water, shelter, and clothing.

A want is something that people desire but is not necessary for survival, such as a new smartphone or a luxury holiday.

Economics studies how we meet both our needs and wants given limited resources.

6. Goods and Services |

Goods are tangible items that can be touched, such as a book or a car. Services are intangible activities performed for others, such as teaching or banking.

Economic goods are scarce and have an opportunity cost, while free goods are abundant and have no opportunity cost (e.g. air).

Most goods and services we use daily are economic goods, produced using scarce resources.

7. Introduction to Demand and Supply |

Demand is the willingness and ability of consumers to buy a good or service at various prices. The law of demand states that when price rises, quantity demanded falls (and vice versa).

Supply is the willingness and ability of producers to offer a good or service for sale. The law of supply states that when price rises, quantity supplied rises.

The interaction of demand and supply determines the market price and quantity sold, known as equilibrium.

8. The Price Mechanism |

The price mechanism is the system by which prices in a free market adjust to allocate resources. Prices act as signals to both consumers and producers.

If there is excess demand, prices tend to rise, encouraging producers to supply more. If there is excess supply, prices fall, encouraging more consumption.

This self-regulating nature helps answer the basic economic questions without central direction.

9. Money and Exchange |

Money serves several functions: a medium of exchange, a unit of account, a store of value, and a standard of deferred payment.

Before money, people used barter, which required a double coincidence of wants. Money overcomes this inefficiency.

Modern economies rely heavily on money to facilitate trade, investment, and saving.

10. Economic Systems Overview |

An economic system is the way a society organises production, distribution, and consumption. The main types are market, planned, and mixed economies.

In a market economy, decisions are made by individuals and firms based on prices. In a planned economy, the government makes key decisions. A mixed economy combines elements of both.

Most real-world economies, including the UK and China, operate as mixed economies with varying degrees of government intervention.
