1. Mean, Median, Mode and Range |

Descriptive statistics help us summarise data from experiments and surveys. The mean is the arithmetic average: add up all the scores and divide by the number of scores. The median is the middle value when all scores are arranged from smallest to largest. The mode is the value that appears most often. The range tells us about the spread of data and is simply the highest score minus the lowest score.

Mean = Σx ÷ N

Range = Highest Score − Lowest Score

The mean is sensitive to extreme values (outliers), whereas the median is more robust. Psychologists often report the mean and range together, or the median if the data is skewed.

2. Percentage Change Formula |

In psychological research we sometimes compare a score before and after an intervention, or measure the difference between an experimental group and a control group. Percentage change expresses that difference as a proportion of the original amount, making comparisons fair and easy to interpret.

Percentage Change = (Difference ÷ Original Value) × 100

For example, if a memory test score increases from 12 to 15 after using a mnemonic technique, the difference is 3, the original value is 12, so the percentage change is (3 ÷ 12) × 100 = 25% improvement.

3. Multi-Store Model of Memory (Atkinson & Shiffrin, 1968) |

Atkinson and Shiffrin proposed that human memory consists of three separate stores linked by processes of attention and rehearsal. Information flows from the environment into sensory memory, then – if attended to – into short-term memory (STM), and with enough rehearsal it may be encoded into long-term memory (LTM).

Sensory memory: very large capacity; duration less than 0.5 seconds for iconic (visual) and 2–3 seconds for echoic (auditory) storage; encoded in raw sensory form.

Short-term memory (STM): capacity 7 ± 2 items; duration about 18–30 seconds without rehearsal; primarily acoustically encoded.

Long-term memory (LTM): potentially unlimited capacity and duration; mainly semantically encoded (by meaning).

4. Serial Position Effect (Primacy & Recency) |

When we are asked to recall a list of words immediately after hearing them, we tend to remember the first few items (primacy effect) and the last few items (recency effect) better than those in the middle. Murdock (1962) demonstrated that primacy happens because early items receive more rehearsal and move into LTM, while recency happens because the last items are still in STM.

Serial Position Curve: Recall is highest for primacy (beginning) and recency (end) portions.

This finding supports the distinction between STM and LTM. If recall is delayed by a distracting task, the recency effect disappears, but the primacy effect remains.

5. Classical Conditioning: Pavlov’s Formula |

Classical conditioning is a form of learning by association. Pavlov’s dogs learnt to associate the sound of a bell (neutral stimulus) with food (unconditioned stimulus), eventually producing a conditioned response of salivation to the bell alone. The sequence can be summarised as follows.

Before conditioning: UCS (Food) → UCR (Salivation)

NS (Bell) → No salivation

During conditioning: NS (Bell) + UCS (Food) → UCR (Salivation)

After conditioning: CS (Bell) → CR (Salivation)

Key terms: UCS = unconditioned stimulus, UCR = unconditioned response, NS = neutral stimulus, CS = conditioned stimulus, CR = conditioned response. Extinction occurs when the CS is repeatedly presented without the UCS.

6. Operant Conditioning: Reinforcement and Punishment |

Operant conditioning, studied by B.F. Skinner, explains how consequences shape voluntary behaviour. Behaviours followed by desirable outcomes are likely to be repeated, while those followed by undesirable outcomes are less likely to be repeated. There are four main types of consequences.

Positive reinforcement: adding a pleasant stimulus to increase a behaviour (e.g., giving praise). Negative reinforcement: removing an unpleasant stimulus to increase a behaviour (e.g., taking away a boring task). Positive punishment: adding an unpleasant stimulus to decrease a behaviour (e.g., giving a detention). Negative punishment: removing a pleasant stimulus to decrease a behaviour (e.g., taking away screen time).

Psychologists often apply reinforcement in therapies and classrooms to encourage adaptive behaviours. Punishment can be effective but may have side effects such as fear or aggression.

7. Asch’s Conformity Study Variables |

Solomon Asch (1951) investigated whether people would conform to an obviously incorrect group judgement in a line-matching task. About 37% of participants conformed on critical trials. Three key variables were found to influence the level of conformity.

Group size: conformity increased as the number of confederates rose, but only up to about 3–4 people; beyond that, the effect levelled off.

Unanimity: if one other person gave the correct answer (a dissenting partner), conformity dropped sharply, even if that partner did not agree with the real participant.

Task difficulty: when the lines were made more similar and the task became harder, conformity increased because people felt more uncertain.

8. Milgram’s Obedience: Key Factors |

Stanley Milgram (1963) studied obedience to authority by asking participants to deliver increasingly strong electric shocks to a learner. In the original study, 65% of participants went up to the maximum 450-volt level. Several situational factors were shown to affect obedience rates.

Proximity of the authority figure: when the experimenter gave orders over the phone instead of being in the same room, obedience dropped to 20.5%.

Proximity of the victim: when the learner was in the same room and the participant had to force his hand onto a shock plate, obedience fell to 30%.

Peer support: when two other confederate teachers refused to continue, only 10% of real participants remained fully obedient.

9. Piaget’s Stages of Cognitive Development |

Jean Piaget believed that children’s thinking develops through four distinct stages, each characterised by a different kind of logic. Understanding these stages helps psychologists explain how reasoning abilities change with age.

Sensorimotor stage (0–2 years): infants learn through senses and actions; they develop object permanence – knowing objects exist when out of sight.

Pre-operational stage (2–7 years): children use symbols and language but are egocentric and struggle with conservation tasks.

Concrete operational stage (7–11 years): logical thinking about concrete objects appears; conservation and reversibility are mastered.

Formal operational stage (11+ years): abstract and hypothetical thinking develops; adolescents can reason about what might be, not just what is.

10. Ainsworth’s Strange Situation & Attachment Types |

Mary Ainsworth (1978) designed the Strange Situation to observe attachment between an infant and their caregiver. The procedure involves a series of separations and reunions in a playroom. Based on the infant’s behaviour, three main attachment styles are identified.

Secure attachment (Type B): the infant explores freely when the caregiver is present, shows distress during separation, and is easily comforted upon reunion. This is linked to sensitive, responsive parenting.

Insecure-avoidant attachment (Type A): the infant ignores the caregiver and shows little distress during separation or reunion. Caregivers may be rejecting or over-intrusive.

Insecure-resistant attachment (Type C): the infant clings to the caregiver, becomes very distressed during separation, but resists comfort upon reunion. This is often associated with inconsistent caregiving.

11. Research Methods: IV, DV and Hypothesis |

In a psychology experiment, the independent variable (IV) is the factor the researcher manipulates or changes. The dependent variable (DV) is the factor that is measured; it is the outcome that may be affected by the IV. A hypothesis is a clear, testable prediction about the relationship between the IV and the DV.

Experiment = IV (manipulated) → DV (measured)

For example, if you investigate whether background music affects recall, the IV is the presence or type of music, and the DV is the number of words correctly remembered. A directional hypothesis might state: “Listening to instrumental music will increase word recall compared to silence.”

12. Ethical Guidelines in Psychology Research |

All psychological research must be conducted ethically to protect participants from harm. The British Psychological Society (BPS) provides a set of ethical principles that researchers must follow. Even Year 7 students designing mini-experiments should consider these rules.

Informed consent: participants must know what the study involves and agree to take part. For under-16s, parental consent is required.

Deception: misleading participants should be avoided; if necessary, it must be justified and followed by a full debrief.

Right to withdraw: participants can leave the study at any time without penalty.

Confidentiality: personal data must be kept secure and not shared without permission.

Protection from harm: researchers must minimise psychological and physical risk; participants should not leave the study feeling worse than when they arrived.
