📚 History Formulas & Theorems Quick Reference |
History is not a subject of numbers, but every successful SQA Year 7 historian uses mental ‘formulas’ to organise knowledge, analyse sources, and build powerful arguments. This quick-reference guide gathers the key ‘theorems’ that will help you crack the patterns of cause, evidence, change, and significance. Think of these as your thinking toolkit — once you learn them, you will never stare blankly at a source or an essay question again.
1. The Cause & Consequence Formula |
Every historical event has a recipe. You cannot simply say ‘it just happened’. Use the Cause & Consequence Formula to separate the layers of why something occurred and what followed.
Event = Long-term Causes + Short-term Causes + Trigger → Immediate Consequence + Long-term Consequence
Long-term causes are deep-rooted problems bubbling for years. Short-term causes are recent sparks. A trigger is the final push that sets everything off. For example, the Wars of Scottish Independence: long-term cause — English kings repeatedly claimed feudal overlordship of Scotland; short-term cause — the death of Alexander III left Scotland without a clear heir; trigger — Edward I’s demands on John Balliol pushed the Scots to rebel. After the trigger, the immediate consequence was the outbreak of war, while a long-term consequence was the strengthening of Scottish national identity.
2. The Source Reliability Theorem |
You will meet written sources, pictures, and artefacts in every exam. How do you decide whether to trust a source? Use the Reliability Theorem to weigh it up.
Reliability = (Provenance + Content) × Purpose
Provenance is where a source comes from: who made it, when, and in what situation? Content is what it actually says or shows. Purpose is why it was created — to inform, to persuade, to mock? The multiplying sign means purpose can heavily boost or wreck reliability. For instance, a chronicle written by a Scottish monk in 1300 praising Robert the Bruce may have accurate content about battles, but its purpose was to glorify the king, so we must be cautious. Always cross-check with other sources.
3. The Change & Continuity Theorem |
History is not just one thing after another; it is a mixture of things that alter and things that stay the same. The Change & Continuity Theorem helps you describe a period clearly.
Historical Period = Changes + Continuities
When you study medieval Scotland, you must look for both. For example, after the Reformation of 1560: a major change was that the country broke away from the Pope and adopted Protestantism, churches were stripped of decorations. However, a strong continuity was that clan loyalties and the Highland way of life continued much as before. Seeing both change and continuity earns high marks because it shows you understand the true texture of the past — life never changes completely overnight.
4. The Significance Formula |
When a question asks ‘How important was…?’ or ‘Why is this event significant?’, don’t guess. Apply the Significance Formula.
Significance = Scale × Depth × Duration
Scale means how many people or areas were affected. Depth means how deeply people’s lives were changed. Duration means how long the effects lasted. The Battle of Bannockburn in 1314: scale — it involved thousands of soldiers and decided the fate of a kingdom; depth — it gave Robert the Bruce firm control, changed leadership, and boosted Scottish morale; duration — its consequences echoed for centuries, helping to preserve Scottish independence until the Union of 1707. An event scoring highly on all three is hugely significant.
5. The Chronology Formula |
Many students panic about dates. But chronology is not about memorising a boring list; it is about building a mental timeline. Use the Chronology Formula to make dates stick.
Timeline Memory = Anchors + Stories + Patterns
Anchors are key dates you already know well (e.g., 1066, 1314, 1560). Hang new dates around these anchors. Stories create meaning — learn the tale behind a date, like the murder of the Earl of Douglas at the ‘Black Dinner’ in 1440. Patterns group dates: all these dates are in the Wars of Independence, all these are Reformation dates. By linking dates to anchors, gripping stories, and patterns, your brain organises them for easy recall. Try drawing a simple timeline by hand and colour-code the patterns.
6. The Interpretation Theorem |
Historians constantly disagree. Your job is not simply to pick one side, but to understand why they disagree. The Interpretation Theorem helps you construct a balanced argument.
Best Interpretation = Evidence + Perspective + Context
Evidence is the factual material available; perspective is the writer’s or speaker’s background, religion, or politics; context is what was happening at the time that shaped their view. When examining different opinions about Mary, Queen of Scots, one historian writing from a Catholic perspective might see her as a tragic martyr, while a Protestant writer could view her as a scheming threat. Both interpretations are built on evidence, but the perspective and context shape the story. A strong SQA answer acknowledges this and weighs the evidence, rather than shouting one view is right.
7. The Evidence Inference Theorem |
Sources often don’t spell everything out. You need to infer — to read between the lines. The Evidence Inference Theorem shows you exactly how to do it.
Inference = Explicit Information + Background Knowledge → Reasoned Conclusion
Explicit information is what you can directly see or read. A cartoon from 1746 might show a Highland soldier being disarmed after Culloden. The explicit info is the soldier and the weapon being taken. Your background knowledge tells you that after Culloden, the British government banned Highlanders from carrying weapons and wearing tartan as part of the Act of Proscription. Your reasoned conclusion: the source supports the idea that the government aimed to crush Highland culture. Always state your background knowledge; this proves you are using evidence, not just guessing.
8. The Comparison Formula |
When asked to compare events, people, or policies, a simple list of what they did is not enough. The Comparison Formula gives your answer structure and depth.
Compare = Similarities + Differences + ‘So What?’
First, identify genuine similarities. For example, both William Wallace and Robert the Bruce fought against English occupation. Next, pinpoint key differences: Wallace was not a noble by birth and used guerrilla tactics, while Bruce was a noble claimant who fought set-piece battles and later became king. Finally, answer ‘So what?’ — what does the comparison explain? In this case, it shows that Scottish resistance was a broad movement involving different social classes and strategies, which is why it eventually succeeded. Without the ‘so what’, comparison is just description.
9. The Impact Analysis Theorem |
A major event never has a single flat result. Its impact spreads out like ripples in a pond. The Impact Analysis Theorem helps you trace those ripples.
Impact = Direct Impact + Indirect Impact + Ripple Effects
Direct impact is the immediate obvious effect. The Black Death (arriving in Scotland around 1349) directly killed up to a third of the population. Indirect impact includes changes caused by that loss: labour became scarce, so peasants could demand higher wages, which weakened the feudal system. Ripple effects are the long-term, second-order consequences: the reduced population led to abandoned farmland, affecting the environment and settlement patterns for generations. When analysing any event’s impact, ask yourself: what happened straight away? What changed because of that? And what changed much later as a chain reaction?
10. The Motivation Formula |
Why did people in the past act as they did? Treat motivation like a mixture of hopes, fears, and beliefs. The Motivation Formula prevents you from viewing historical figures as one-dimensional.
Action = Hopes + Fears + Beliefs
Hopes are what a person wanted to gain: power, land, safety, justice. Fears are what they wanted to avoid: invasion, loss of status, humiliation. Beliefs are ideas they held deeply, such as religious faith or a duty to their clan. King James VI of Scotland’s actions in moving to London to become James I of England in 1603 can be explained: hope — he desired the wealth and prestige of the English crown; fear — he worried about Catholic plots within Scotland if he stayed away too long but also feared missing this lifetime opportunity; belief — he firmly believed in the divine right of kings. Use Hopes + Fears + Beliefs for any leader or group and your explanations will become rich and rounded.
11. The Continuity & Turning Point Checker |
Was a particular event a genuine turning point or just a bump in the road? Use this checker theorem to decide.
If (Evidence of Sudden Widespread Change) > (Evidence of Strong Continuity) → Turning Point
Look at daily life, government, religion, and economy before and after the event. If the majority of evidence shows things changed quickly and for many people, it is a turning point. If you find that most patterns remained intact, it was not. For instance, the death of a king might seem huge, but if the same nobles ran the country and peasants farmed the same strips of land, continuity outweighs change, and it is not a genuine turning point. The Reformation in Scotland, however, rearranged religion, land ownership, education, and foreign alliances — that passes the test as a turning point.
12. The SQA Revision Loop Theorem | SQA
This final theorem is not about the past; it is about how you study history now. Cramming does not work. Use the Revision Loop Theorem to build secure knowledge.
Strong Knowledge = Review → Self-Test → Apply Formula → Review (Repeat)
After you study a topic (like the Highland Clearances), review your notes without just re-reading. Cover them and recall the key causes using the Cause Formula. Self-test by writing three questions and answering them without looking. Apply a formula: for example, use the Impact Analysis Theorem to sketch out the effects of the Clearances. Then, review what you missed and repeat the loop a day later. By cycling through these formulas again and again, you build automatic historical thinking. This is the ultimate meta-formula that will raise your SQA grade.
