1. What is Statistics? | 什么是统计?

Statistics is the branch of mathematics that deals with collecting, organising, presenting, analysing, and interpreting data. In Year 7, your child moves from simple counting and listing to beginning to ask questions like ‘What does this data tell us?’ or ‘How can we show these results clearly?’ It is less about complicated calculations and more about building a logical way of thinking about information. Every survey, weather chart, or sports league table is a chance to practise statistics.

2. Types of Data | 数据类型

One of the first ideas your child learns is that not all data is the same. Data can be categorical (qualitative) or numerical (quantitative). Categorical data describes qualities or groups, such as favourite colours — red, blue, green. Numerical data involves numbers and can be further split into discrete and continuous data. Discrete data can only take certain values, often whole numbers, like the number of siblings (0, 1, 2, 3). Continuous data can take any value within a range, such as height (e.g. 134.5 cm) or time.

3. Collecting Data | 收集数据

Data collection is the starting point for any statistical investigation. A question like ‘What is your favourite sport?’ is much better than ‘Don’t you think football is the best sport?’ The first is neutral; the second leads the respondent. They also learn about sampling — realising they cannot always ask everybody, so they might survey a portion of their class instead.

A tally column makes counting efficient, and the frequency column tells us the total for each category. For example, if 6 children choose apples, we write ‘6’ in the frequency column. This transforms a messy list into a clean summary.

5. Bar Charts | 条形图

The vertical axis must start at zero and have a consistent scale, otherwise comparisons become misleading.

The horizontal axis often shows time, and the vertical axis shows the measured quantity.

Although Year 7 pupils do not always calculate precise angles, they learn to interpret simple pie charts and understand concepts like ‘the biggest slice’ and ‘more than half’. They may also construct pie charts by working out fractions of 360° later in the year.

The mean is calculated by adding all values together and dividing by how many there are. The median is the middle value when the numbers are put in order. The mode is the value that appears most often. For example, in the data set 2, 3, 3, 5, 7: mean = (2+3+3+5+7) ÷ 5 = 4; median = 3 (the third number); mode = 3 (appears twice).

Ask: ‘Which average best describes us?’

In Year 7, range is often taught alongside the averages to give a fuller picture of the data.

Pupils learn to place events on a probability scale from 0 (impossible) to 1 (certain). They also carry out simple experiments, such as rolling a fair six-sided die and recording outcomes. The probability of rolling an even number is 3 out of 6, which simplifies to ¹/₂ or 0.5.

Use real datasets: keep a weather log, track screen time, or survey family members about favourite films. Most importantly, show that statistics is a tool for curiosity, not a dry set of rules. When children see data as interesting stories, they engage much more deeply.
