1. Welcome and Course Overview |
In Year 7 Art, you will begin to work like a real artist. The AQA approach encourages you to develop your own ideas, explore different materials and learn how to analyse artworks. Over the summer, you can get a head start by understanding what the subject actually involves. Rather than just copying pictures, you will learn to record what you see, experiment with techniques and present personal responses. Your teacher will guide you through drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking and digital art, but the journey always begins with looking closely and asking questions.
The summer transition course is built around four simple habits: looking, making, thinking and talking about art. Keep a sketchbook or folder where you can collect drawings, colour tests and notes. Don’t worry about making everything perfect — your sketchbook is a place to practise and play. If you spend just twenty minutes a day drawing something from observation or mixing colours, you will already be strengthening the skills that Year 7 artists need.
2. The Transition from Primary to Secondary Art |
Primary school art often focuses on imagination and playful making, which is wonderful. In secondary school, we build on that creativity by introducing more formal skills and processes. You will be expected to use a sketchbook regularly, learn specific drawing techniques and talk about the work of other artists. This does not mean your imagination is less important — it means you are learning to control your tools so that your ideas can be expressed more clearly.
One of the biggest changes is the focus on observation. In Year 6 you may have drawn a dog from memory, but in Year 7 you will be asked to look at a real object or photograph and draw what you actually see. This helps you notice details, shapes and textures. It feels challenging at first, but it is the same skill every great artist practises. You can start now by picking ordinary objects from around your home — a shoe, a fork, a leaf — and drawing them slowly while looking more at the object than at your paper.
3. Basic Drawing Skills: Line and Shape |
Every artwork begins with a mark. In Year 7 art, you will learn to use line confidently. Lines can be thick, thin, smooth, rough, continuous or broken. Practising different types of line teaches your hand to be sensitive and controlled. Try filling a page with straight lines, wavy lines, zigzags and spirals, using only a pencil. Then try the same with a pen or a stick dipped in ink. Notice how each tool makes you move differently.
Shape is equally important. All complex drawings are built from simple shapes: circles, squares, triangles and ovals. By learning to see the basic shapes within a subject, you can sketch a rough structure before adding details. For a simple exercise, draw a bird or a animal using only circles and ovals, connecting them with light lines. Don’t worry about feathers or fur yet. This approach is called ‘constructive drawing’ and it will make even difficult subjects feel manageable.
4. Understanding Colour Theory |
Colour brings emotion and energy to art. The Year 7 AQA course expects you to understand the colour wheel, including primary, secondary and tertiary colours. Primary colours (red, yellow, blue) cannot be mixed from other colours. Secondary colours (orange, green, purple) are made by mixing two primaries. Tertiary colours come from mixing a primary with a neighbouring secondary colour. Learning these relationships helps you mix exactly the shade you want instead of guessing.
| Primary Colours | Red, Yellow, Blue |
| Secondary Colours | Orange (Red + Yellow), Green (Blue + Yellow), Purple (Red + Blue) |
| Complementary Pairs | Red & Green, Blue & Orange, Yellow & Purple |
Complementary colours sit opposite each other on the colour wheel and create strong contrast when placed side by side. Warm colours (reds, oranges, yellows) appear to come forward, while cool colours (blues, greens, purples) seem to recede. You can create depth in a painting simply by using warm colours in the foreground and cooler colours in the background. Over the summer, you could create your own colour wheel using paint, coloured pencils or even cut paper. Label each colour and keep it in your sketchbook for reference.
5. Tone and Shading |
Tone describes how light or dark something is. Without tone, drawings look flat. In Year 7 you will practise creating a full range of tones, from the lightest highlight to the darkest shadow. The easiest way to start is with a pencil. Try drawing a value scale: a row of seven boxes, shading the first box as lightly as possible (leaving it almost white) and the last box as dark as you can make it. The boxes in between should show a smooth, gradual change. This trains your hand to control pressure and builds muscle memory.
Once you are comfortable with the scale, apply tone to a simple sphere or an egg. Imagine the light comes from one direction (for example, top-left) and shade the opposite side darker. Leave a small white area for the highlight and add a soft shadow beneath the object to ground it. This technique is called chiaroscuro, and it is the same principle master painters used to make their figures look three-dimensional. Practise on fruit, cups or your own hand — always looking at where the light hits and where it fades.
6. Observational Drawing |
Observational drawing means drawing what is really in front of you, not what you think is there. Our brains store symbols for objects (a circle for an eye, a triangle for a nose), but these symbols rarely match the truth. In Year 7, you will train yourself to switch off those symbols and look carefully at proportions, angles and details. One helpful trick is to hold your pencil at arm’s length and use it to measure relative sizes. For example, you might measure how many times the width of a cup fits into its height. This gives you a more accurate structure for your drawing.
Another great practice is blind contour drawing. Look at an object and draw its outline very slowly without looking at your paper. The result will look strange, but this exercise forces you to truly see every curve and edge. Afterwards, do a modified contour drawing where you glance at the paper only to reposition your pencil. Keep a folder of these timed sketches — they will quickly improve your eye-hand coordination and give you confidence to tackle more complex subjects like a crumpled piece of paper or a houseplant.
7. Basics of Composition |
Composition is the way you arrange shapes, colours and space within your artwork. A strong composition guides the viewer’s eye and makes an image feel balanced. Even in Year 7, you will be introduced to simple compositional rules such as the rule of thirds. Imagine your paper divided into nine equal sections by two horizontal and two vertical lines. Placing your main subject where these lines intersect often creates a more dynamic and interesting picture than putting it dead centre. Try this with a photograph or a still life setup, sketching a few different arrangements in your sketchbook before you commit to a final drawing.
Also pay attention to foreground, middle ground and background. A landscape or still life should have something in the front, something in the middle and something in the back to create depth. Overlap objects to show which is in front. You can also use framing — like a doorway or window — to focus attention on the main part of your drawing. As part of your summer preparation, take three photographs of the same view, each time changing your position slightly, and compare how the composition changes the feeling of the scene.
8. Exploring Art Materials and Media |
Year 7 art is all about experimentation. You will be encouraged to try a variety of materials before settling on a favourite technique. Pencils (HB, 2B, 4B, 6B) give different darkness and softness. Charcoal creates rich, smudgy darks ideal for dramatic shadows. Oil pastels blend beautifully, while chalk pastels allow soft, powdery layers. Watercolour teaches you to work from light to dark and to embrace happy accidents. Even collages made from magazine cut-outs can spark brilliant ideas. During the summer, collect a small set of materials and make a ‘media page’ in your sketchbook where you test each one, noting what you like about it.
Don’t feel you need expensive supplies. A normal school pencil, an eraser that can be shaped into a point and a set of cheap watercolours will take you a long way. Household items like cotton buds, old toothbrushes and sponges can create interesting textures. Try splattering paint with a toothbrush or dabbing with a sponge to make foliage. The more you play now, the more confident you will feel when your teacher introduces a new technique in class.
9. Looking at Artists and Artworks |
Talking and writing about art is a key skill in AQA courses. Even at Key Stage 3, you will be asked to describe, analyse and respond to artworks. Start by looking at a range of artists from different times and places. Good examples for Year 7 include Vincent van Gogh (for his expressive brushstrokes and bold colour), Georgia O’Keeffe (for her close-up studies of flowers and natural forms) and Henri Matisse (for his use of colour and cut-outs). When you look at an artwork, ask yourself: what do I see? What materials did the artist use? How does the colour make me feel? What could the story behind the image be?
Make a page in your sketchbook dedicated to one artist you like. Print out or draw a small copy of their work and annotate around it. Write down at least three sentences describing what you notice, and then try to create your own artwork inspired by their style. For instance, after studying O’Keeffe, you could take a close-up photograph of a flower in your garden and draw it large, filling the whole page. This process of research and personal response is exactly what you will do in school, and starting early helps build a thoughtful, independent approach to art.
10. Keeping a Sketchbook and Summer Activities |
A sketchbook is your most important tool in Year 7 Art. It is not a neat finished book — it is a working journal where you gather ideas, experiment and make mistakes. Over the summer, try to fill at least ten pages with a mixture of drawings, colour experiments, notes on artists and material tests. Date each page and add a short title. This habit shows your teacher that you are curious and ready to learn. One useful structure is to spend one day on observation (draw a household object), one day on colour (mix a new shade), one day on imagination (draw a creature from a dream) and one day on research (look at an artist online).
Set yourself a small creative challenge each week. For week one, draw your shoe from three different angles. For week two, paint a colour wheel and find objects around the house that match each section. For week three, copy a section of a famous painting in pencil, focusing only on tone. For week four, cut black paper shapes and arrange them into a silhouette composition. These activities mirror the kind of mini-projects you will enjoy in Year 7, and they will give you a portfolio full of evidence of your developing skills. Most importantly, have fun and remember that every artist was once a beginner.
