1. What is Business? |

Definition: A business is any organisation that provides goods or services to satisfy customer needs while aiming to make a profit. It can be as small as a lemonade stand or as large as a multinational supermarket chain.

Purpose of business: Businesses exist to create value. They turn raw materials, ideas or people’s skills into products that others are willing to pay for. By doing this, they earn revenue, pay workers and hopefully generate surplus income for the owners.

Why study business? Understanding business helps you make smarter choices as a consumer, gives you insight into how the world around you works and opens doors to future careers. The AQA curriculum encourages you to think like an entrepreneur from the very start.

2. Needs and Wants |

Basic needs: Needs are things we cannot survive without, such as food, clean water, shelter and clothing. Businesses that supply these essentials often find steady demand, because people will always require them.

Wants and luxuries: Wants are items we desire but are not essential for survival – for example, video games, designer trainers or holidays. Successful businesses often focus on turning wants into perceived needs through clever marketing.

How businesses respond: Smart businesses study the difference between needs and wants for their target customers. A supermarket will always stock bread and milk (needs), but it might also offer exotic fruit or ready meals (wants) to attract more shoppers.

3. Goods and Services |

Goods explained: Goods are physical products that you can touch, hold and take home. They are divided into consumer goods (for individuals, like a bicycle) and producer goods (used by businesses, like a factory machine).

Services explained: Services are intangible actions provided by someone else, such as haircuts, bus journeys or online tutoring. You cannot keep a service in your hand, but you still benefit from the experience or expertise.

Mixed offerings: Many modern businesses offer a blend of goods and services. A restaurant provides a physical meal (good) along with the waiting staff’s effort and atmosphere (service). Understanding this distinction helps you analyse any company.

4. Factors of Production |

The four factors: To produce any good or service, businesses need four key resources: land, labour, capital and enterprise. These are known as the factors of production. Each one is essential, and businesses must combine them efficiently.

All natural resources, including farmland, forests, oil and water.
The human effort, both physical and mental, used in production.
Man-made tools and equipment, such as machinery, factories and computers.
The willingness to take risks and organise the other three factors to create a business.

Scarcity and choice: Because resources are limited, businesses face scarcity. This forces them to make choices about what to produce, how to produce it and for whom. These decisions are at the heart of business studies.

5. Entrepreneurs and Enterprise |

Who is an entrepreneur? An entrepreneur is someone who spots an opportunity, takes financial and personal risks, and gathers the resources needed to launch a new venture. Famous examples include young founders of online shops or local bakers who turn a recipe into a chain.

Characteristics of successful entrepreneurs: They tend to be creative, resilient, decisive and willing to learn from failure. Many Year 7 students already show these traits when fundraising for charity or running a school tuck shop.

Enterprise in daily life: Enterprise is not only about starting a business; it is a way of thinking. Showing initiative, solving problems creatively and using resources wisely are all enterprising skills valued by schools and future employers alike.

6. Types of Businesses |

Sole trader: A sole trader is a business owned and operated by one person. It is simple to set up and the owner keeps all profits, but they also have unlimited liability – meaning personal assets could be at risk if the business fails.

Partnership: A partnership involves two or more people sharing the ownership, workload and profits. Partners usually sign a legal agreement to clarify responsibilities. Like sole traders, partners often have unlimited liability unless they form a limited liability partnership.

Private limited company (Ltd): A private limited company is a separate legal entity from its owners, who are shareholders. The company’s finances are distinct, and shareholders have limited liability – they can only lose the money they invested. Many family firms operate as Ltd companies.

Public limited company (PLC): PLCs can sell shares on the stock market to raise large sums of money. They are heavily regulated and owned by the public. This structure is used by huge brands like supermarkets and banks.

7. Introduction to Money and Currency |

Functions of money: Money serves three main purposes: it is a medium of exchange (we use it to buy goods), a unit of account (prices are stated in pounds and pence) and a store of value (you can save it for future use).

Currency and payment methods: In the UK, the pound sterling (£) is the official currency. Today, businesses accept a wide range of payment methods: cash, debit cards, mobile phone apps and online transfers. Each method affects how quickly the business receives its money.

Simple revenue and profit: Revenue is the total money a business earns from selling its products. Profit is what remains after subtracting all costs. For example, if your cake stall sells £50 worth of cakes and the ingredients cost £20, your profit is £30.

8. Basic Supply and Demand |

Demand: Demand is how much of a product consumers are willing and able to buy at a given price. Generally, when the price drops, demand rises; when price goes up, demand falls.

Supply: Supply is how much producers are willing to offer for sale. Higher prices often encourage firms to supply more because they can earn more profit, while lower prices might make production unprofitable.

Market price: The point where demand and supply meet is called the equilibrium market price. This is the price at which the quantity buyers want equals the quantity sellers are prepared to offer. Real markets constantly adjust as conditions change.

9. The Marketing Mix (4Ps) | 营销组合(4P)

Product: The product is what a business sells, including its design, quality, packaging and features. A strong product meets a genuine customer need or want. Businesses regularly update products to stay competitive.

Price: Pricing must balance making a profit and being attractive to customers. Strategies include cost-plus pricing (adding a percentage to costs), competitive pricing (matching rivals) and penetration pricing (starting low to gain market share).

Place: Place refers to where and how the product is sold – online, in a high-street shop, via vending machines or through supermarkets. Good placement ensures the product is available when and where customers want to buy it.

Promotion: Promotion covers advertising, social media campaigns, special offers and public relations. The goal is to inform potential customers about the product and persuade them to choose it over competitors.

10. Business Ethics and Going Green |

Ethics in business: Ethics means doing the right thing, even when the law does not force you to. Ethical businesses treat workers fairly, source materials responsibly and are honest with customers. Unethical behaviour might boost profit in the short term but damages reputation in the long run.

Sustainability: Sustainable businesses try to meet today’s needs without harming the ability of future generations to meet their own. This includes reducing waste, recycling materials and lowering carbon emissions. Many customers now prefer eco-friendly brands.

Fairtrade: The Fairtrade mark guarantees that producers in developing countries receive a fair price and work in decent conditions. When you see the logo on chocolate or bananas, it signals the business has made an ethical commitment.

11. Key Skills for Business Studies |

Numeracy: You will work with percentages, calculate profit margins, interpret simple graphs and handle data. Brushing up on mental maths over the summer will give you a head start, especially with calculations involving money and break-even points.

Communication: Business studies requires you to write clearly, explain your reasoning and sometimes present ideas to others. Practice writing short paragraphs that describe a business situation and suggest improvements.

Critical thinking: You will be asked to evaluate decisions – is raising prices always good? Why might a new product fail? Train yourself to look at both sides of an argument while using evidence from case studies.

12. Summer Project: Design Your Own Business |

Task overview: Your summer challenge is to design a simple business idea for your school or neighbourhood. Create a one-page plan that covers the good or service you will offer, the target customers, the price, how you will promote it and where it will be sold.

Step‑by‑step: (1) Choose an idea – perhaps homemade greeting cards, a car‑wash service or a homework club. (2) Decide on a business name. (3) Use the 4Ps to build your plan. (4) Estimate your costs and calculate the price you need to charge to make a profit. (5) Write a short paragraph explaining why people will buy from you.

Reflection questions: What skills did you use from this bridging course? Which factor of production would be most important for your business? How could you make your project ethical and eco‑friendly? Keep your plan ready to share with your new teacher.
