1. Understanding Plot and Structure | 理解情节与结构

Plot is the sequence of events in a story. It usually follows a structure: exposition (introduction of characters and setting), rising action (conflicts develop), climax (the turning point), falling action and resolution. Recognising this pattern helps you track how tension builds and how a writer shapes the reader’s experience.

情节是故事中事件的顺序。它通常遵循一个结构:开端(介绍人物和背景)、发展(冲突展开)、高潮(转折点)、结局和收尾。识别这个模式有助于你追踪紧张感如何建立,以及作者如何塑造读者的阅读体验。

In poetry, structure can refer to stanza length, rhyme scheme and line breaks. In drama, acts and scenes divide the action. Always ask: why has the writer chosen this particular structure? How does it affect meaning?

在诗歌中,结构可以指诗节长度、押韵格式和分行。在戏剧中,幕和场划分了行动。始终要问:作者为什么选择这种特定的结构?它如何影响意义?

2. Character Analysis | 人物分析

Characters are the people (or beings) in a text. To analyse a character, look at what they say, what they do, how others react to them and the author’s direct description. Consider whether a character is dynamic (changing) or static (unchanging). Think about their motivations, strengths and flaws.

人物是文本中的人(或存在物)。要分析一个人物,要观察他们说什么、做什么、他人如何回应他们,以及作者的直接描写。思考一个人物是动态的(变化的)还是静态的(不变的)。考虑他们的动机、优点和缺点。

A useful technique is STEAL: Speech, Thoughts, Effect on others, Actions, Looks. This acronym reminds you of the different ways an author reveals character. For example, how does a character’s dialogue style reflect their personality?

一个有用的技巧是 STEAL:言语(Speech)、思想(Thoughts)、对他人的影响(Effect on others)、行动(Actions)、外貌(Looks)。这个缩写提醒你作者揭示人物的不同方式。例如,一个人物的对话风格如何反映其个性?

3. Exploring Themes | 探索主题

A theme is a central idea or message in a literary work, such as love, power, justice or identity. Themes are not just topics; they are the writer’s exploration of those topics. To find themes, ask: what big ideas does the text make me think about? What is the writer suggesting about human life or society?

主题是文学作品中的核心思想或信息,如爱、权力、正义或身份。主题不仅仅是话题;它们是作者对这些话题的探讨。要发现主题,可以问:这个文本让我思考哪些大观念?作者对人类生活或社会暗示了什么?

Support your ideas about theme by tracking how it develops throughout the text. Collect quotations that link to the same theme and notice patterns. Remember, a single text can explore multiple interconnected themes.

通过追踪主题在全文中的发展来支持你的观点。收集与同一主题相关的引文,注意其中的模式。记住,一个文本可以探讨多个相互关联的主题。

4. Language and Imagery | 语言与意象

Writers choose words deliberately to create specific effects. When analysing language, look for powerful verbs, precise adjectives, sensory details and figurative language. Ask: what connotations does this word have? Why this word and not another?

作者有意选择词语来创造特定的效果。分析语言时,要寻找有力的动词、精确的形容词、感官细节和比喻性语言。问:这个词有什么内涵意义?为什么用这个词而不用另一个?

Imagery appeals to the five senses (sight, sound, touch, taste, smell) to paint vivid pictures in the reader’s mind. A writer might use a simile (comparing using ‘like’ or ‘as’), a metaphor (direct comparison), or personification (giving human qualities to non-human things). Spotting imagery helps you understand the mood and the writer’s attitude.

意象通过诉诸五种感官(视觉、听觉、触觉、味觉、嗅觉)在读者脑海中描绘生动的画面。作者可能会使用明喻(用“像”或“如”比较)、隐喻(直接比较)或拟人(赋予非人事物以人的特质)。识别意象有助于你理解氛围和作者的态度。

5. Literary Devices | 文学手法

Literary devices are tools writers use to enhance meaning and engage readers. Common devices include alliteration (repeated consonant sounds), onomatopoeia (sound words), rhetorical questions, hyperbole (exaggeration) and symbolism. Each device adds a layer of meaning.

文学手法是作者用来增强意义和吸引读者的工具。常见的手法包括头韵(重复辅音)、拟声词、反问句、夸张和象征。每种手法都增添了一层意义。

When you identify a device, don’t just label it. Explain its effect. For instance, ‘The hissing snake’ uses sibilance (a form of alliteration) to mimic the sound and create a sinister mood. Always link the device to the text’s themes or the character’s feelings.

当你识别出一种手法时,不要只是贴标签。要解释其效果。例如,“嘶嘶作响的蛇”使用了咝音(一种头韵)来模仿声音,营造出阴森的气氛。始终将手法与文本的主题或人物感受联系起来。

6. Setting and Atmosphere | 场景与氛围

Setting refers to the time and place where a story unfolds. It includes physical location, historical period, time of day and weather. Setting can influence characters’ behaviour, reflect their emotions or underline a theme. A stormy night might foreshadow conflict, while a cosy room might suggest safety.

场景指的是故事发生的时间和地点。它包括物理位置、历史时期、一天中的时间和天气。场景可以影响人物的行为,反映他们的情感,或强调主题。暴风雨之夜可能预示冲突,而舒适的房间可能暗示安全。

Atmosphere is the emotional feeling that a text creates for the reader. It is built through word choice, imagery, pacing and sentence length. When you describe atmosphere, use precise adjectives: tense, joyful, eerie or melancholy. Always connect atmosphere back to the writer’s purpose.

氛围是文本为读者创造的情感感受。它通过词语选择、意象、节奏和句子长度来构建。描述氛围时,使用精确的形容词:紧张、欢乐、怪诞或忧郁。始终将氛围与作者的意图联系起来。

7. Narrative Perspective | 叙事视角

The narrator is the voice that tells the story. In first-person narration, the story is told by a character using ‘I’. This can feel intimate but also limited, as we only know that character’s thoughts. Third-person narration uses ‘he’, ‘she’ or ‘they’. A third-person omniscient narrator knows everything about all characters, while a limited narrator only knows the thoughts of one or two.

叙述者是讲述故事的声音。第一人称叙述中,故事由一个人物用“我”讲述。这可能显得亲切,但也很局限,因为我们只知道那个人物的想法。第三人称叙述使用“他”“她”或“他们”。第三人称全知叙述者知道所有人物的一切,而受限叙述者只知道一两个人物的想法。

Consider why the author chose a particular point of view. How would the story change if told from another character’s perspective? Who is left silent? These questions deepen your analysis and help you evaluate reliability.

思考作者为什么选择特定的视角。如果从另一个人物的视角讲述,故事会如何改变?谁被排除在叙述之外?这些问题深化了你的分析,并帮助你评估叙述的可靠性。

8. Context and Background | 背景与语境

Context is the historical, social and cultural setting in which a text was written and is read. For example, a novel set in Victorian England might reflect class divisions, gender expectations and industrialisation. Understanding context can illuminate a writer’s choices and characters’ attitudes.

语境是指文本创作和阅读时的历史、社会和文化背景。例如,一部以维多利亚时代英国为背景的小说可能反映了阶级分化、性别期望和工业化。理解语境可以阐明作者的选择和人物的态度。

In Year 7, you might explore the context of Shakespeare’s time, myths and legends, or modern novels addressing friendship and growing up. Always link context to the text: do not just list facts. Show how the context shapes the story’s concerns or the language used.

在 Year 7,你可能探索莎士比亚时代的背景、神话传说,或关于友谊和成长的现代小说。始终将语境与文本联系起来:不要只罗列事实。要展示语境如何塑造故事所关注的问题或所使用的语言。

9. Quoting and Using Evidence | 引用与使用证据

Strong literary analysis relies on evidence from the text. A quotation is a word-for-word extract placed in ‘quotation marks’. Choose short, precise quotations that support your point. Embed them smoothly into your own sentences rather than ‘dropping’ them in.

有力的文学分析依赖于文本中的证据。引文是带引号的逐字摘录。选择简短、准确的引文来支持你的观点。将它们流畅地嵌入你自己的句子中,而不是生硬地“丢”进去。

For example, instead of writing ‘The giant was scary. The text says, “His eyes were like fire.”‘, try: ‘The writer presents the giant as terrifying when describing how “His eyes were like fire”, using a simile to emphasise his fearsome glare.’ Always explain what the quotation shows and how.

例如,不要写“巨人很可怕。文中说,‘他的眼睛像火一样。’”试着写:“作者将巨人描绘得令人恐惧,描述‘他的眼睛像火一样’,运用明喻强调他可怕的目光。”始终要解释引文表明了什么以及如何表明。

10. Writing Analytical Paragraphs | 写作分析段落

A well-structured analytical paragraph often follows a pattern like PEEL: Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link. Start with a clear topic sentence stating your idea. Then provide a quotation or specific example. Explain how the writer’s choices create meaning, using literary terminology. Finally, link back to the question or to your overall argument.

一个结构合理的分析段落通常遵循类似 PEEL 的模式:观点(Point)、证据(Evidence)、解释(Explanation)、联系(Link)。以一个清晰的论点句开始,陈述你的想法。然后提供一个引文或具体例子。解释作者的选择如何创造意义,使用文学术语。最后,联系回问题或你的整体论点。

You might also explore alternative interpretations, using phrases like ‘This could also suggest …’ or ‘On the other hand …’. Developing your written voice takes practice, so always plan, draft and edit your work.

你还可以探索不同的解释,使用诸如“这也可能暗示……”或“另一方面……”的短语。培养你的书面表达能力需要练习,所以要始终规划、起草和编辑你的作业。
