📚 Year 7 AQA Geography: Case Study Practice Drill |
Case studies are the beating heart of geography. They allow you to move beyond textbook definitions and apply your knowledge to real places, real people and real events. In your AQA Year 7 course, you will need to use specific examples to explain physical processes, human patterns and environmental challenges. This practice drill is designed to sharpen your case study skills, giving you a clear structure and plenty of opportunities to practise.
1. Why Are Case Studies Important in Geography? |
In geography, a case study is a detailed example of a real-world situation — a specific river flood, a coastal village, a city’s traffic scheme. It shows you can move from knowing the theories to explaining how they actually work on the ground. Examiners look for named locations, precise facts and figures, and clear links between causes, effects and responses.
Without case studies, your answers stay vague. Saying ‘flooding can damage homes’ is much weaker than saying ‘During the York floods of December 2015, over 600 homes were flooded when the River Ouse burst its banks.’ Your aim in this drill is to collect and use evidence like a real geographer.
2. The Structure of a Strong Case Study Answer |
A top-level case study answer is never a random list of facts. It follows a logical sequence that geographers use to investigate any issue. Use the PEEL structure below to build your paragraphs:
| PEEL Element | What It Means | PEEL
| Point | State the main idea or reason clearly. | |
| Evidence | Use specific facts, place names, numbers and dates. | |
| Explanation | Explain how the evidence supports your point and what it means geographically. | |
| Link | Connect the point back to the question or to the next idea. | |
For your AQA Year 7 work, even a short answer can follow this pattern. Practise by turning any case study fact into a PEEL sentence.
3. Key Skill: Locating the Case Study |
Never start a case study without giving a precise location. A good location description includes the region, the country and a map reference when possible. For example, ‘Happisburgh is a village on the north-east coast of Norfolk, in the east of England.’ This sets the scene and shows you understand the spatial context.
Practice by finding your case study locations on a map. Draw a quick sketch map and label the main physical and human features. Coastal case studies need you to name the sea; river case studies need the river’s source and mouth. This skill turns a list of facts into a real place.
4. Natural Hazard Case Study: Eyjafjallajökull Volcanic Eruption |
In 2010, the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull erupted. It is located beneath an ice cap in southern Iceland. The magma mixed with glacial ice, creating an enormous ash cloud that rose high into the atmosphere. The ash was then carried southeast towards Europe by the jet stream.
Primary effects included the melting of the glacier and flooding from the eruption site. However, the most significant secondary effect was the closure of European airspace. Over 100,000 flights were cancelled in a week, affecting about 10 million travellers. This shows how a tectonic event in one place can disrupt global systems.
Responses included setting up no-fly zones across much of Europe, using satellite data to monitor the ash plume and improving international aviation safety procedures. The eruption became a textbook example of how fragile our interconnected world can be.
5. River Flooding Case Study: York Floods 2015 |
York is a historic city in North Yorkshire, England. It is built at the confluence of the River Ouse and the River Foss. In December 2015, Storm Eva brought record rainfall to the catchment area. The ground was already saturated from previous wet weather, so infiltration was very low and surface runoff increased dramatically.
The River Ouse burst its banks, and the Foss Barrier had to be lifted to prevent catastrophic damage to the pumping station. Over 600 homes were flooded, roads became impassable and businesses in the city centre lost millions of pounds. The floods were partly caused by the city’s location in a natural floodplain.
Management strategies introduced afterward included raising the Foss Barrier, improving flood walls along the Ouse and creating upstream flood storage areas. The York case helps you explain how both physical and human factors increase flood risk.
6. Coastal Erosion Case Study: Happisburgh, Norfolk |
Happisburgh is a village on the rapidly eroding coastline of North Norfolk. The cliffs here are made of soft boulder clay and sand, which are easily worn away by the waves. The coast faces the North Sea and is exposed to powerful winter storms.
The rate of erosion at Happisburgh can exceed 10 metres per year after storms. Several houses have collapsed into the sea, and a whole section of Beach Road has vanished. Residents have had to be relocated, and a local campaign has fought for more coastal defences.
However, installing hard engineering like sea walls is very expensive, and the government’s cost-benefit analysis often does not justify protecting a small settlement. This makes Happisburgh a powerful example of the conflict between human attachment to place and economic realities.
7. Population Change Case Study: Japan’s Ageing Population |
Japan has one of the oldest populations in the world. In 2020, over 28% of its people were aged 65 or older. The causes of this ageing population include a very low birth rate, a long life expectancy (around 84 years), and a post-war baby boom generation now reaching old age.
Impacts include a shrinking workforce, pressure on the pension and healthcare systems, and rural depopulation as young people move to cities. Many villages have closed schools and are struggling to maintain services. The dependency ratio is rising, meaning fewer workers support more elderly people.
Japan’s responses include encouraging robotics to assist in elderly care, raising the retirement age and trying to increase immigration, though the country remains relatively closed. This case study links closely to the demographic transition model and shows a Stage 5 country.
8. Urban Sustainability Case Study: London Congestion Charge |
London is a megacity with over 9 million residents. Air pollution and traffic congestion are major problems, especially in central areas. In 2003, Transport for London introduced the Congestion Charge — a daily fee for vehicles entering a defined Central London zone during peak hours.
The aim was to reduce traffic volume, improve air quality and encourage the use of public transport. Evidence shows that traffic in the charging zone fell by around 15% in the first year, and bus use increased. Revenue from the charge is reinvested in London’s transport network.
However, critics argue that the charge mostly affects lower-income drivers and that congestion has simply shifted to the boundary roads. Despite this, the scheme is widely seen as a pioneering strategy for managing urban mobility and making cities more liveable.
9. Practise Your Analysis: Cause, Effect, Response |
Every case study can be broken into three parts: cause, effect and response. Train yourself to always separate them clearly. For instance, for the York floods, the cause was prolonged heavy rain on saturated ground; the effect was 600+ flooded homes; the response was raising flood barriers. Use a simple table to map these out for every case you revise.
| Case Study | Cause | Effect | Response |
| Eyjafjallajökull | Magma-ice interaction | Airspace closure, 100,000 flights cancelled | No-fly zones, satellite monitoring |
| Happisburgh | Soft cliffs, North Sea storms | Houses lost, road collapses | Relocation, limited defences |
Building visual organisers like this during your revision will make it much easier to recall facts quickly in an assessment.
10. Using Data and Maps to Support Your Case Study |
Strong geographers never rely on opinion — they quote numbers. Learn at least two or three key statistics for each case study. For Japan’s ageing population, you can say ‘28% of the population is over 65’ and ‘life expectancy is 84 years.’ These figures give your argument weight and precision.
Sketch maps are equally valuable. A simple outline showing the location of the flooded area in York, the eroding coast at Happisburgh or the ash cloud path from Iceland to Europe can replace a long written description. In exams, a quick annotated diagram is often worth high marks.
Try this exercise: take a blank outline map of the UK and plot at least three of the case study locations covered here. Add labels with one key fact each.
11. Self-Assessment Checklist for Case Study Revision |
Use the following checklist to audit your understanding of any case study. If you can confidently tick every box, you are exam-ready.
- I can name the specific location and describe where it is.
- I have at least three key facts, including numbers. |
- I can explain the causes using geographical terms. |
- I can describe both primary and secondary effects. |
- I know the immediate and long-term responses. |
- I can link the case study to a bigger idea, such as climate change or urbanisation. |
Go through this list for the York floods, Japan and the Congestion Charge. If you find a gap, re-read that section and build a flashcard.
12. Practice Task: Design Your Own Local Case Study |
Now it is your turn. Choose a local issue — this might be a river near your school, a new housing development, a busy road junction or an area that flooded recently. Research it using local news, maps and maybe a site visit.
Structure your case study with the following headings: Location, Causes, Effects (social, economic and environmental), Management/Responses, and Evaluation. Present it as a one-page fact sheet or a short video script. The act of creating a case study is the best way to master the skill for all the others.
Swap your case study with a classmate and use the self-assessment checklist to give feedback. This peer-review approach will help you see what a strong case study really looks like.
