1. The Norman Conquest and the Battle of Hastings |
In January 1066, King Edward the Confessor died without a clear heir. Three men claimed the English throne: Harold Godwinson, Earl of Wessex, who was chosen by the English nobles; William, Duke of Normandy, who insisted Edward had promised him the crown; and Harald Hardrada, King of Norway, who based his claim on an earlier Viking treaty. Harold Godwinson was crowned on 6 January 1066, but both rivals prepared to invade.
Harold’s army defeated Hardrada at the Battle of Stamford Bridge on 25 September 1066. Immediately afterwards, Harold marched south to face William, who had landed at Pevensey. The two armies met at Senlac Hill, near Hastings, on 14 October 1066. William’s forces used a combination of archers, cavalry and feigned retreats that broke the English shield wall. Harold was killed, and William claimed victory. On Christmas Day 1066, William was crowned King of England in Westminster Abbey.
2. The Feudal System and the Domesday Book |
To control his new kingdom, William introduced the feudal system. The king owned all the land. He granted large estates to his most trusted Norman barons and bishops – his tenants-in-chief. In return, they provided knights, soldiers and money. These barons then gave land to knights, who provided military service, and knights allowed peasants (villeins) to work the land in exchange for labour and a share of their crops. This hierarchy created a strict chain of loyalty and obligation.
In 1085, William ordered a great survey of his kingdom to find out who owned what and how much it was worth. This record, completed in 1086, became known as the Domesday Book because its judgement, like the Day of Judgement, could not be changed. It listed the land, livestock, mills and people in almost every village, showing the dramatic transfer of land from Anglo-Saxon lords to Norman followers.
3. Power of the Medieval Church |
In medieval England, the Church was the centre of everyone’s life. The Pope in Rome was regarded as God’s representative on Earth and could influence kings. Bishops and abbots were not only religious leaders but also major landowners who sat in the king’s council. The Church controlled education, hospitals and the calendar of holy days. Everyone paid a tithe – one tenth of their produce – to support the local parish priest.
Monasteries and nunneries copied manuscripts, cared for the poor and offered hospitality to travellers. The Church also used its power to condemn wrongdoing, such as the murder of Thomas Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury, in 1170. Becket’s shrine became a major pilgrimage site, showing the spiritual authority that could challenge even King Henry II.
4. Magna Carta and the Limits on Kingship | 《
King John (reigned 1199–1216) lost most of his father’s lands in France and angered the barons with high taxes and arbitrary justice. In 1215, a group of rebellious barons confronted John at Runnymede and forced him to seal Magna Carta – a charter of demands that sought to limit royal power. It stated that the king was not above the law, that no free man could be imprisoned without a fair trial, and that taxes required the consent of the kingdom’s great council.
Although John soon appealed to the Pope to cancel the charter, Magna Carta remained a powerful symbol. It was reissued several times and is often seen as the foundation of the principle that everyone, including the monarch, must obey the law. This idea of limited kingship would echo in later conflicts between Parliament and the Crown.
5. The Black Death: Causes and Consequences |
The Black Death reached England in 1348. Fleas living on black rats carried a bacterium called Yersinia pestis, which caused bubonic plague. Swollen buboes, high fever and death within days terrified the population. Although people at the time did not understand germs – some blamed bad air or God’s punishment – the disease spread quickly through busy ports and towns, killing between one third and one half of the population.
The enormous loss of life had profound consequences. Labour became scarce, so surviving peasants could demand higher wages and move to better land. The old feudal ties began to weaken. Landlords tried to freeze wages with the Statute of Labourers (1351), but this only increased resentment. Meanwhile, some people lost faith in the Church as priests died alongside ordinary folk, while others turned to a deeper form of piety.
6. The Peasants’ Revolt of 1381 | 1381 年农民起义
Anger over the Statute of Labourers, combined with the introduction of a new Poll Tax in 1380, led to one of the most dramatic rebellions of the Middle Ages. In June 1381, rebels from Kent and Essex, led by Wat Tyler and the priest John Ball, marched on London. They demanded the abolition of serfdom, an end to unfair taxes, and a charter of freedoms. The young King Richard II met the rebels at Mile End and agreed to some of their requests.
The following day, however, at Smithfield, Wat Tyler was killed during a confrontation with the Lord Mayor of London. Richard famously told the rebels, ‘You shall have no captain but me,’ and promised to lead them. The revolt collapsed, and the royal forces quickly reasserted control. Although the demands were not immediately granted, many lords took the warning seriously, and feudal practices continued to decline.
7. The Hundred Years’ War and Joan of Arc |
From 1337 to 1453, England and France fought a series of conflicts known as the Hundred Years’ War. The English won famous victories at Crécy (1346), Poitiers (1356) and Agincourt (1415), thanks largely to the longbow. The war was about who had the right to the French throne, as well as control over valuable territories such as Gascony. These battles became central to English national identity, celebrated in chronicles and later in Shakespeare’s plays.
By the 1420s, the tide began to turn. A French peasant girl named Joan of Arc claimed God had sent her to drive out the English. Her leadership at the Siege of Orléans in 1429 revived French morale. She was captured in 1430, tried for heresy, and burned at the stake in 1431. Yet her inspiration helped the French push the English back. By 1453, England had lost almost all its French lands except Calais.
8. The Wars of the Roses |
Soon after the end of the Hundred Years’ War, England slid into a civil war between two rival branches of the Plantagenet royal family: the House of Lancaster, whose badge was a red rose, and the House of York, a white rose. The conflict lasted from 1455 to 1485. The main cause was weak kingship. Henry VI suffered from mental illness, and powerful nobles fought for control of the crown, exploiting rival claims to the throne.
Key battles include the Battle of Towton (1461), one of the bloodiest fought on English soil, and the Battle of Bosworth Field (1485). At Bosworth, Henry Tudor, a Lancastrian claimant, defeated King Richard III of York. Richard was killed, and Henry married Elizabeth of York, uniting the two houses and establishing the Tudor dynasty. The Wars of the Roses ended the medieval period and ushered in a new era of royal authority.
9. Henry VIII and the Break with Rome |
Henry VIII came to the throne in 1509. He is best known for his six marriages and his break from the Roman Catholic Church. When his first wife, Catherine of Aragon, did not produce a surviving male heir, Henry sought an annulment from the Pope. When Pope Clement VII refused, Henry decided to split from Rome. Through the Act of Supremacy (1534), Parliament declared Henry the Supreme Head of the Church of England.
The dissolution of the monasteries followed. Thomas Cromwell, Henry’s chief minister, organised the closure of over 800 religious houses, confiscating their wealth and land. This increased royal revenue and strengthened Henry’s control, but it also destroyed centres of learning and charity. The break with Rome set the stage for decades of religious conflict between Catholics and Protestants in England.
10. Historical Skills: Using Sources |
In Year 7 AQA History, you do not only learn about what happened; you also learn how we know about the past. Historians use primary sources – evidence from the time being studied, such as a diary, a castle wall or a tax record – and secondary sources – later interpretations, like textbooks or documentary films. You need to ask questions about a source: who made it, when, and why? Is it useful? Is it reliable?
When analysing a source, historians consider its nature, origin and purpose (NOP). For example, a painting of Thomas Becket’s murder may tell us about later veneration rather than the exact details of the event. A tax record might be very accurate for listing households but silent about people who avoided taxes. Being critical with sources helps you build stronger arguments and understand why different accounts of the same event can exist.
