📚 Year 7 AQA History: Formula & Theorem Quick Reference Handbook | AQA
History may not have equations like mathematics, but historians rely on powerful mental tools – we call them ‘formulas and theorems’ – to unlock the past. This handbook presents the core thinking frameworks you will need in Year 7 AQA History, from analysing sources to understanding cause, consequence and change over time. Each ‘theorem’ is a proven way to build stronger historical arguments and ace your assessments.
1. The Chronology Theorem |
Events in history are connected by a timeline. The Chronology Theorem states that to understand any event, you must place it in the correct sequence before and after other key moments. Always ask: what happened immediately before and what followed? Using a timeline helps you spot patterns and turning points.
- Keywords: BC/BCE, AD/CE, decade, century, millennium, period, era, chronological order.
Example: The Norman Conquest (1066) can only be understood by looking back at Edward the Confessor’s death and forward to the feudal system and Domesday Book.
2. The Source Reliability Formula |
Every source needs to be tested. The Reliability Formula has four parts: Nature, Origin, Purpose, and Audience – remember it as NOPA. Ask what type of source it is (nature), who created it and when (origin), why it was made (purpose), and who it was intended for (audience). This formula will reveal bias, limitations and usefulness.
Reliability = (Nature + Origin + Purpose + Audience) ÷ Context. A source that is a private diary (nature), written by a monk in 1087 (origin), intended to praise William the Conqueror (purpose) for a church audience (audience) will be less reliable about Saxon suffering than a law court record.
3. The Cause and Consequence Chain |
No event happens in isolation. The Cause and Consequence Chain states that for every historical event you study, you must identify multiple causes (long-term, short-term and trigger) and multiple consequences (intended and unintended). Draw a chain of dominoes to see how causes pushed into effects that then became causes of new events.
Formula: Long-term cause + Short-term cause + Trigger → Event → Intended consequence + Unintended consequence.
Black Death example: Long-term: overcrowding, poor diet; short-term: trade routes from Asia; trigger: arrival of infected rats in Messina, 1347. Consequences: feudalism weakened, wages rose (unintended); church authority questioned.
4. The Change and Continuity Principle |
History is a blend of things that change and things that stay the same. The Change and Continuity Principle teaches you to always look for what continued even after a major event. Rate the pace of change: was it rapid or gradual? Use a two-column table to sort changes and continuities.
| Changes (变迁) | Continuities (延续) |
|---|---|
| After 1066: French became language of court | English still spoken by ordinary people |
| Feudal duties changed landholding | Village life and farming continued much as before |
This principle stops you from claiming that everything changed overnight. Courts changed, but community traditions endured.
5. The Significance Equation |
Not everything that happened is equally important. The Significance Equation helps you decide what deserves to be remembered: Significance = Impact × Number affected × Duration of change. The more people affected, the deeper the change and the longer it lasted, the more significant the event.
Test the Peasants’ Revolt (1381): short-lived failure? But it showed that ordinary people could challenge authority, influencing future protests – medium impact, large number involved, long-term memory. Hence significant.
6. The Bias Detection Theorem |
Bias is a slant or one-sided view, and every source has some. The Bias Detection Theorem is: Bias = Creator’s position + Purpose. Identify who wrote the source, what they could gain from the message, and what they omitted. Compare with another source to see what is left out.
Case: Bayeux Tapestry – Norman viewpoint, purpose to justify William’s invasion. It omits Harold’s oath being made under duress. An Anglo-Saxon chronicle gives a different story.
7. The Interpretation Theorem |
History is a debate. The Interpretation Theorem states that the same evidence can lead to different historical accounts because historians have differing backgrounds, values and questions. You must recognise that interpretations are constructed, not fixed truths. In Year 7, compare a textbook account with a historian’s article, then ask why they differ.
Formula: Interpretation = Evidence + Historian’s perspective (time, place, purpose). For example, Victorian historians often portrayed William I as a great nation‑builder; modern historians focus more on the brutal ‘Harrying of the North’.
8. The Norman Conquest Sequence |
A critical chain of events in medieval history. The sequence formula: Edward the Confessor’s death (Jan 1066) → Harold Godwinson crowned → William prepares invasion → Battle of Stamford Bridge (Sep) → Norman landing at Pevensey (28 Sep) → Battle of Hastings (14 Oct 1066) → William crowned (25 Dec 1066).
Memorising this sequence helps you explain why Harold was at a disadvantage: his troops were exhausted after Stamford Bridge and had to march south rapidly. Use the timeline to test cause and consequence.
9. The Medieval Society Structure Theorem |
The feudal system can be summarised as a pyramid with the monarch at the top, then tenants‑in‑chief (barons, bishops), knights, and peasants (villeins) at the base. The theorem: Land = Power. Land granted in return for loyalty and military service created the web of feudal obligations. Understanding this hierarchy explains everything from tax to rebellion.
| Rank (等级) | Role (角色) | Obligation (义务) |
|---|---|---|
| King | Owned all land | Grant fiefs; demand loyalty |
| Barons | Ruled large estates | Provide knights; counsel king |
| Knights | Fought for barons | Military service approx. 40 days/yr |
| Peasants (villeins) | Worked the land | Labour service, pay rent, tithes |
Always link back: the king’s authority rested on this chain of land-based obligations.
10. The Black Death Impact Formula |
The Black Death (1348‑49) killed roughly one‑third to one‑half of England’s population. The Impact Formula is: Decline in population → Labour shortage → Peasants demand higher wages → Lords resist → Social tension → Statute of Labourers 1351 → Weakening of feudalism → Long‑term: end of serfdom.
Test this chain with evidence: after the plague, wages rose dramatically despite laws trying to freeze them. Many peasants moved to towns or negotiated freedom. This ‘formula’ shows how a demographic shock changed an entire social system.
11. The Peasants’ Revolt Causation Model |
The Revolt of 1381 was not random. Apply the Cause and Consequence Chain specifically: long‑term: feudal oppression, Statute of Labourers; short‑term: Poll Tax of 1380‑81 (third tax in four years); trigger: tax collector’s assault on a girl in Brentwood, Essex. This model proves that a single spark can ignite deep‑rooted grievances.
Then trace consequences: short‑term failure (leaders killed, charters revoked), but long‑term poll tax abandoned, lords became more cautious. Use the model to compare with later protests.
12. The Revision Formula for Year 7 Exams |
To succeed in AQA Year 7 History assessments, apply the R.E.V.I.S.E. theorem: Read the question carefully, Evidence selection (pick best examples), Verify the chronology, Interpretation check (acknowledge viewpoints), Structure paragraph (PEE: Point, Evidence, Explain), Evaluate significance. Practise writing short paragraphs that combine facts with the thinking formulas above.
Sample answer starter: ‘The Black Death was significant because it caused a labour shortage, which gave peasants more bargaining power. For example, wages rose by about 50% in the 1350s. This was an unintended consequence that weakened the feudal system permanently.’ This uses the Impact Formula and historian’s vocabulary.
Memorise the key dates and ‘formulas’ in this handbook, and you will be able to tackle any Year 7 AQA History question with confidence.
