📚 Year 7 AQA Media Studies: Formula & Theorem Quick Reference Handbook | 7年级AQA媒体研究:公式定理速查手册
In Media Studies, just like in Mathematics or Science, we use special ‘formulas’ and ‘theorems’ to understand how media texts are constructed and how they affect audiences. These are not equations with numbers, but powerful ideas and frameworks developed by media experts. This handbook compiles the essential formulas every Year 7 AQA Media Studies student needs to analyse films, advertisements, magazines, and online content with confidence.
1. The Sign Formula: Signifier + Signified = Sign |
Signifier (the physical form) + Signified (the mental concept) = Sign (the meaning)
This formula, inspired by Ferdinand de Saussure, is the foundation of media language. The signifier is what we see or hear (a word, image, sound). The signified is the idea or concept it triggers in our mind. Together they form a sign with a shared meaning in a culture. For example, a red rose (signifier) may signify love or romance (signified). Media producers carefully choose signifiers to construct specific meanings.
2. Camera Shot & Angle Equations |
Camera shots and angles are like visual equations. Each type of shot or angle is a variable that influences the audience’s understanding of character, setting, and emotion. Knowing these ‘equations’ lets you ‘solve’ media texts.
Extreme Long Shot (ELS) = Setting + Context (Character is small, environment dominates)
Long Shot (LS) = Full Body + Surroundings
Mid Shot (MS) = Waist Up + Facial Expression + Gesture
Close-Up (CU) = Head/Face + Emotion + Detail
Extreme Close-Up (ECU) = One Feature (eye, mouth) + Intensity
High Angle = Looking Down → Character Appears Weak/Small
Low Angle = Looking Up → Character Appears Powerful/Dominant
Eye-Level Angle = Equality → Neutral, Realistic
3. The Mise-en-Scène Equation |
Mise-en-scène translates to ‘everything in the frame’. The formula combines all visual elements to create meaning:
Mise-en-Scène = Setting + Lighting + Costume + Props + Colour + Body Language
Setting: The location and time period provide context. A dystopian wasteland instantly signals danger and struggle.
Lighting: High-key lighting (bright, even) suggests happiness or glamour; low-key lighting (shadows, contrast) creates mystery or fear.
Costume: Clothes and make-up indicate character’s personality, status, or role. A superhero’s cape signifies power.
Colour: Colours carry meaning – red for danger/passion, blue for calm/cold, green for nature/envy.
Body Language: Posture and facial expressions communicate emotions non-verbally.
4. The Sound Formula: Diegetic + Non-Diegetic Sound = Atmosphere |
Sound in media is classified into two main types. The formula for soundscape analysis is:
Total Sound Atmosphere = Diegetic Sound (in the story world) + Non-Diegetic Sound (outside the story world)
Diegetic sound includes dialogue, footsteps, traffic noise, music from a radio within the scene – anything characters can hear. Non-diegetic sound includes voice-overs, background music (score), and sound effects added for the audience only. The combination shapes mood: a horror film uses diegetic creaking doors with non-diegetic tense music to maximise fear.
5. Todorov’s Narrative Theorem: Equilibrium → Disruption → New Equilibrium |
Narrative Structure = Equilibrium → Disruption/Conflict → Resolution/New Equilibrium
Tzvetan Todorov suggested that most stories follow a three-part structure. First, a state of balance (equilibrium) is established. Then an event or villain disrupts this balance, creating conflict. Finally, the disruption is resolved, leading to a new, often improved, equilibrium. This formula is visible in fairy tales, action films, and even advertisements.
Example: In a typical superhero film, the city is peaceful (equilibrium), a villain attacks (disruption), the hero defeats the villain (resolution), and the city is safe again but with a changed hero (new equilibrium).
6. Propp’s Character Formulae: 7 Character Types |
Vladimir Propp analysed Russian folk tales and identified seven recurring character types. These ‘character formulas’ help us understand narrative roles:
The Hero: The main character who seeks something or someone, often on a quest. Example: Harry Potter.
The Villain: Opposes the hero and creates the disruption. Example: Voldemort.
The Donor: Gives the hero a magical object or special knowledge. Example: Dumbledore giving Harry the invisibility cloak.
The Helper: Accompanies and aids the hero. Example: Ron and Hermione.
The Princess (or Prize): The reward for the hero’s success; often needs rescuing. Example: Princess Leia.
The Dispatcher: Sends the hero on the mission. Example: Gandalf sending Bilbo.
The False Hero: Appears good but is eventually revealed as bad. Example: Professor Quirrell in Harry Potter.
7. The Audience Uses and Gratifications Formula: 4 Reasons We Use Media |
The Uses and Gratifications theory by Blumler and Katz states that audiences actively choose media to satisfy specific needs. The formula is:
