Welcome to the Year 7 CAIE Economics revision guide. This article covers the fundamental concepts you will encounter in your first year of economics study. Understanding these core knowledge points will help you build a strong foundation for the subject. We will explore scarcity, opportunity cost, the roles of different economic agents, how markets work, and much more. Each section is presented in both English and Chinese to support bilingual learners.

1. Scarcity and the Basic Economic Problem |

Scarcity is the fundamental economic problem. It arises because human wants for goods and services are unlimited, but the resources available to produce them are limited. Resources such as time, money, raw materials, and labour are finite, yet our desires for things like food, entertainment, and travel never seem to end.

Due to scarcity, individuals, firms, and governments must make choices about how to allocate their scarce resources. Every choice involves a trade-off, because choosing one thing means giving up something else. This constant need to decide is at the heart of economics.

2. Needs, Wants and Goods |

Needs are things essential for survival, such as water, food, clothing, and shelter. Without these, a person cannot live. Wants, on the other hand, are desires for goods and services that are not necessary for survival, like smartphones, video games, or overseas holidays. Wants are unlimited and vary from person to person.

Economic goods are scarce – there are not enough to satisfy everyone’s wants, so they have an opportunity cost. Free goods, such as air and sunshine, are abundant and do not have an opportunity cost because no one has to give anything up to obtain them.

3. Opportunity Cost |

Opportunity cost is the value of the next best alternative that must be sacrificed when a choice is made. It is not the sum of all alternatives, only the single most valuable option given up. This concept reminds us that every decision comes with a real cost.

For instance, if a farmer uses a field to grow wheat instead of corn, the opportunity cost is the corn that could have been grown. Similarly, a student choosing to study economics for an extra hour gives up the leisure time or sleep they could have enjoyed. Governments also face opportunity costs when they allocate budgets to defence instead of healthcare.

4. Economic Agents |

The three main economic agents are households, firms, and the government. Households consume goods and services and provide labour to firms. Firms produce goods and services and employ workers. The government sets rules, collects taxes, and provides public services such as education and infrastructure.

Interactions between these agents create the circular flow of income. Households spend money on goods from firms, and firms pay wages, rent, interest, and profits back to households. The government injects money through spending and withdraws it through taxation, influencing the flow.

5. Factors of Production |

Economists classify resources into four factors of production: land, labour, capital, and enterprise. Each factor earns a specific reward. Land includes all natural resources; labour is human effort; capital refers to man-made tools and machinery; enterprise is the ability to combine the other factors and take risks.

The table below summarises the factors and their rewards in English.

Factor Description Reward
Land Natural resources (minerals, forests, water) Rent
Labour Human effort, both physical and mental Wages/Salaries
Capital Man-made goods used in production (machinery, tools) Interest
Enterprise The ability to combine other factors and take risks Profit

6. Demand and Supply Basics |

Demand refers to the quantity of a good or service that consumers are willing and able to purchase at various prices, over a given period. The demand curve typically slopes downward, showing the inverse relationship between price and quantity demanded: as price rises, quantity demanded falls.

Supply is the quantity of a good or service that producers are willing and able to offer for sale at various prices.
