1. What is Business? |

A business is any organisation that produces goods or provides services to satisfy the needs and wants of customers, usually with the aim of making a profit. Businesses can range from a small local bakery run by one person to a multinational corporation operating in dozens of countries.

The fundamental purpose of a business is to add value. For example, a furniture maker buys wood, shapes it into a chair and sells it for more than the cost of the raw materials and labour. The extra money earned is the value added through the production process.

2. Needs and Wants |

Needs are the basic things people must have to survive, such as food, water, shelter and clothing. Wants are things people would like to have but are not essential for survival, like a smartphone, a holiday or branded trainers. Businesses try to satisfy both needs and wants by offering suitable products.

Needs tend to be limited and stable, while wants are unlimited and constantly changing. Successful businesses pay close attention to how wants evolve so they can create products that people desire. For instance, the want for faster communication led to the development of smartphones, even though the basic need for communication could be met with simpler phones.

3. Goods and Services |

Goods are tangible, physical items that can be seen and touched, such as books, bicycles and food. Services are intangible activities that are performed for someone else, like haircuts, bus journeys and online tutoring. Many businesses provide a combination of goods and services – a restaurant, for example, offers the good (the meal) as well as the service (cooking and serving).

Because goods are physical, they can be stored and transported before being sold. Services, however, are usually consumed at the point of delivery and cannot be stored. Understanding this difference helps businesses decide how to market and deliver what they offer.

4. Factors of Production |

To produce goods and services, businesses need resources. These resources are grouped into four factors of production: land, labour, capital and enterprise. Land includes all natural resources such as soil, water, oil and minerals. Labour is the human effort, both physical and mental, used in production.

Capital refers to man-made resources like machinery, tools, factories and computers that help produce other goods. Enterprise is the special factor that brings the other three together; it is the skill of the entrepreneur who takes risks, organises resources and makes decisions to start a business.

5. Types of Business Organisation |

Businesses can be set up in different legal forms. The main types introduced at Year 7 are sole traders, partnerships and private limited companies. Each type has its own features regarding ownership, liability and ability to raise funds.

Feature Sole Trader Partnership Private Limited Company
Ownership One person 2 to 20 partners Shareholders (1 to 50)
Liability Unlimited Unlimited (usually) Limited
Capital Owner’s savings, loans Partners’ contributions Sale of shares (privately)
Key advantage Complete control, easy to set up Shared skills and workload Limited liability, separate legal identity

The table above shows that a sole trader has full control but faces unlimited liability, meaning personal belongings could be at risk if the business fails. A partnership allows sharing of responsibilities, but partners also usually bear unlimited liability. A private limited company offers limited liability, so shareholders only lose the money they invested, but setting it up involves more legal steps.

6. Stakeholders |

Stakeholders are individuals or groups who have an interest in or are affected by a business’s activities. Internal stakeholders work inside the business, such as owners, managers and employees. External stakeholders are outside the business, including customers, suppliers, the local community and the government.

Different stakeholders often have conflicting interests. For example, owners may want to maximise profit by paying lower wages, while employees want higher salaries. A good business must try to balance these interests, making decisions that benefit as many stakeholders as possible without harming its long-term success.

7. Introduction to Marketing |

Marketing is about identifying customer needs and satisfying them profitably. A simple way to understand marketing is through the marketing mix, often called the ‘4 Ps’: Product, Price, Place and Promotion. Product refers to what is being sold, including its design, features and packaging.

Price is how much customers pay; setting the right price is crucial because it affects both demand and profit. Place involves making products available where customers can buy them, such as in shops, online or through distributors. Promotion covers all the ways businesses communicate with customers, like advertising, special offers and social media.

Businesses must also identify a target market – a specific group of customers at whom the product is aimed. A good marketing mix is designed to appeal directly to that target market.

8. Costs, Revenue and Profit |

Finance is a key part of business. Costs are the expenses a business faces when producing goods or services. They can be split into fixed costs, such as rent, which do not change with output, and variable costs, like raw materials, which rise as more is produced.

Revenue is the income a business earns from selling its products. It is calculated by multiplying the selling price per unit by the number of units sold. Profit is the money left after all costs have been subtracted from revenue. The basic formula is:

Profit = Revenue − Total Costs

If revenue is greater than costs, the business makes a profit. If costs are higher than revenue, it makes a loss. Keeping costs under control and setting prices that cover costs while attracting customers is a constant challenge for business managers.

9. The Business Environment |

The business environment consists of all the external factors that can affect a business but are outside its direct control. These include economic conditions (such as inflation and unemployment), legal regulations, technology, competition and social trends. Businesses must constantly monitor the environment and adapt their strategies to survive and grow.

For example, a change in the law requiring healthier food packaging might force a crisp manufacturer to redesign its labels and increase costs. Similarly, a rise in the popularity of online shopping has pushed many traditional shops to develop e‑commerce websites. Adapting to environmental changes can create opportunities as well as threats.

10. Introduction to Business Plans |

A business plan is a written document that describes what a business aims to do and how it intends to achieve its goals. It typically includes details about the product, the target market, the marketing strategy, financial forecasts and the resources needed. For a new business, a clear plan is essential to attract investors or secure bank loans.

Even existing businesses benefit from planning, as it helps them set objectives and measure progress. Writing a business plan forces the owner to think carefully about potential problems and how to solve them, reducing the risk of failure.
