📚 Year 7 Cambridge Economics: Core Concepts Review | Year 7 剑桥经济:核心知识点梳理

Understanding economics at Year 7 level introduces you to the fundamental ideas that explain how people make choices, how resources are used, and how societies organise themselves to meet their needs. This guide covers the essential concepts you will encounter in the Cambridge Lower Secondary Economics curriculum, providing clear explanations and examples to help you build a strong foundation for further study.

1. What is Economics? |

Economics is the study of how individuals, businesses, and governments make choices when faced with limited resources. It helps us understand how to allocate scarce resources to satisfy unlimited wants and needs.

There are two main branches of economics: microeconomics, which focuses on individual consumers and firms, and macroeconomics, which looks at the economy as a whole. At Year 7, we concentrate on basic microeconomic ideas.

2. Scarcity and Choice |

Scarcity is the fundamental economic problem. It means that there are not enough resources to produce all the goods and services that people want. Because of scarcity, we must make choices about how to use our resources.

Choices involve trade-offs. When you choose one thing, you give up the opportunity to have something else. This leads to the concept of opportunity cost.

3. Opportunity Cost |

Opportunity cost is the value of the next best alternative that you give up when making a decision. It is not simply the money spent; it is what you could have done or gained instead. For example, if you spend your pocket money on a video game, the opportunity cost might be the cinema ticket you did not buy.

Understanding opportunity cost helps individuals and businesses make better choices by comparing the benefits of different options.

4. Needs and Wants |

In economics, needs are things that are essential for survival, such as food, water, shelter, and clothing. Wants are things that we would like to have but are not necessary for survival, like smartphones, holidays, or designer clothes.

Our wants are unlimited, but resources are limited, which creates the problem of scarcity. Economists study how people prioritise their wants.

5. Factors of Production |

Goods and services are produced using resources called factors of production. There are four main factors: land, labour, capital, and enterprise. Each factor earns a reward: rent for land, wages for labour, interest for capital, and profit for enterprise.

Land includes all natural resources such as oil, water, forests, and fertile soil. Labour is the human effort, both physical and mental, used in production. Capital refers to man-made resources like machinery, tools, and factories that help produce other goods. Enterprise is the ability to combine the other three factors, take risks, and organise production.

The following table summarises these factors and their typical rewards:

Factor Description Reward
Land Natural resources Rent
Labour Human effort Wages
Capital Man-made tools & equipment Interest
Enterprise Risk-taking & organisation Profit

6. Introduction to Demand and Supply |

Demand refers to the quantity of a good or service that consumers are willing and able to buy at different prices. The law of demand states that as the price of a product increases, the quantity demanded decreases, and vice versa, assuming other factors remain constant.

Supply refers to the quantity of a good or service that producers are willing and able to sell at different prices. The law of supply states that as the price increases, the quantity supplied increases, because higher prices give producers an incentive to produce more.

7. Markets and Equilibrium |

A market is any place or mechanism where buyers and sellers interact to exchange goods and services. The equilibrium price is the price at which the quantity demanded equals the quantity supplied. At this point, the market is said to clear, with no surplus or shortage.

If the price is above equilibrium, there will be a surplus (excess supply), which puts downward pressure on price. If the price is below equilibrium, there will be a shortage (excess demand), pushing the price upward.

Market forces of supply and demand tend to move the price towards equilibrium automatically, acting like an ‘invisible hand’.

8. Consumers and Producers |

Consumers are individuals who purchase goods and services to satisfy their needs and wants. Their spending decisions are influenced by income, tastes, prices, and advertising. Producers are businesses that supply goods and services to the market. They aim to maximise profits by keeping costs low and selling at competitive prices.

Consumers and producers are interdependent. Consumers provide labour to producers and receive wages in return, which they then spend on goods. This relationship forms a simple circular flow of income in the economy.

9. Specialisation and Trade |

Specialisation occurs when individuals, businesses, or countries focus on producing a limited range of goods or services in which they have an advantage. This can lead to higher productivity and efficiency. The division of labour is a form of specialisation where a production process is broken down into separate tasks, each performed by different workers.

Because of specialisation, trade becomes essential. People and countries exchange the goods they produce for others they need. This is based on comparative advantage, where a party can produce a good at a lower opportunity cost than another.

Trade allows everyone to benefit from specialisation, leading to a greater variety of goods and lower prices for consumers.

10. Economic Systems |

Different societies organise their economies in different ways. The three main types of economic systems are market economies, command economies, and mixed economies. In a market economy, decisions are made by individuals and firms through supply and demand. In a command economy, the government controls what, how, and for whom to produce.

Most countries today have mixed economies, which combine elements of both. The government intervenes in areas like education, healthcare, and infrastructure, while allowing markets to operate in others. The balance between market freedom and government control varies from country to country.

11. Money and Its Functions |

Money is anything that is widely accepted as a medium of exchange. For money to work effectively, it must fulfil three main functions: a medium of exchange, a unit of account, and a store of value. Early economies used barter, but this was inefficient because of the need for a double coincidence of wants.

Modern money takes the form of coins, banknotes, and digital balances. The central bank issues currency and manages the money supply to ensure economic stability and keep inflation under control.

12. Applying Economic Concepts to Everyday Life | 经济概念在日常生活中的应用

Economics is not just theory – it is a way of thinking about everyday decisions. When you decide whether to buy lunch at the school canteen or bring a packed lunch, you are weighing costs and benefits and considering opportunity cost. When you choose how to spend your weekend, you are allocating your scarce time among different wants.

Even at a young age, understanding concepts like specialisation can explain why your parents may trade their skills for a salary and use that money to buy things they do not produce themselves. Recognising the role of consumers and producers helps you see the economy at work all around you.
