📚 Year 7 Cambridge History: Case Study Practice | Year
Welcome to your dedicated case study practice for the Year 7 Cambridge History course. This resource helps you sharpen the key historical skills you need: analysing sources, identifying causes and consequences, weighing up different interpretations, and building a structured argument. Through two rich case studies – the Norman Conquest and the rise of the Tang Dynasty – you will practise these skills step by step, just as a young historian should.
1. What is a Case Study? |
A historical case study is an in‑depth investigation of a single event, person, period or theme. Instead of skimming over many topics, we zoom in closely on one subject – for example, the Battle of Hastings – and examine its background, immediate triggers, key developments, outcomes and the different ways historians have interpreted it. This method helps you learn how to handle evidence, spot bias and build balanced explanations, the very skills assessed in your Cambridge History course.
In Year 7, you are likely to meet case studies from medieval Britain, the Islamic world, China under the Tang, and the Roman Empire. Each one gives you a chance to think like a detective: asking questions about ‘who’, ‘what’, ‘when’, ‘why’ and ‘how’, and then searching for solid evidence before reaching a conclusion.
2. Selecting a Historical Event |
Not every event makes a good case study. Historians look for topics that are well‑documented, have clear causes and significant consequences, and leave behind primary sources – original materials from the period. For Year 7, the Norman Conquest of England (1066) and the founding of the Tang Dynasty in China (618 CE) work brilliantly because we have chronicles, tapestries, official histories and archaeological finds that let us piece together the story.
When you choose an event for your own coursework, ask yourself: do I have access to at least two different primary sources? Can I identify long‑term and short‑term causes? Are there consequences that changed people’s lives? If the answer is yes, you probably have a solid case study.
3. Identifying Causes and Consequences |
Historians often separate causes into long‑term (conditions building up over many years) and short‑term (the immediate spark). A useful approach is to draw a ‘causes web’ – a diagram showing how different factors link together. For the Norman Conquest, long‑term causes include the death of Edward the Confessor without a clear heir and the political rivalry between England and Normandy; a short‑term trigger was Harold Godwineson’s hurried coronation and William of Normandy’s belief that he had been promised the throne.
Consequences can be intended or unintended. William’s victory led to the building of castles and the introduction of the feudal system in England – intended consequences of Norman rule. An unintended consequence was the gradual blending of Anglo‑Saxon and Norman French into the English language we know today.
Practise by listing the causes and consequences of a case study using a simple table:
|---|---|---|
| Edward the Confessor dies without an heir. | Harold Godwineson is crowned king on 6 January 1066. | The Norman ruling class replaces the Anglo‑Saxon elite; feudal lords receive land. |
4. Examining Primary Sources |
A primary source is something created during the period you are studying – such as a diary, a letter, a law code, a tapestry, a coin, or a chronicle. For the Norman Conquest, the Bayeux Tapestry is a star primary source. It is a long embroidered cloth showing the events leading up to the Battle of Hastings. When you examine it, ask: who made it? Why was it made? What does the artist want us to believe about Harold and William? Notice the little details – an arrow in Harold’s eye, a comet blazing – and consider how they shape the viewer’s opinion.
For the Tang Dynasty, a valuable primary source is the ‘Zizhi Tongjian’ (Comprehensive Mirror for Aid in Government), written by Sima Guang in the 11th century, but based on earlier Tang records. It describes the fall of the Sui Dynasty and the rise of Li Yuan (Emperor Gaozu of Tang). When you read such a source, ask about the author’s purpose: was he writing to teach future rulers a moral lesson? That might affect how he described the Sui emperor.
5. Evaluating Bias and Perspective |
All sources are shaped by the person who created them. Bias means a one‑sided view, often favouring one side. A Norman chronicler like William of Poitiers wrote to glorify William the Conqueror, presenting Harold as an oath‑breaker who deserved his fate. An Anglo‑Saxon account, such as the ‘Anglo‑Saxon Chronicle’, paints Harold as a brave and noble king. Spotting bias does not mean dismissing a source; it means you read it critically, asking what the author wanted to achieve and what information might have been left out.
Perspective is broader: it refers to the background, beliefs and worldview of the source’s creator. A Tang dynasty official writing about the fall of the Sui would naturally see the earlier dynasty as corrupt and immoral, while a former Sui supporter might see the Tang as rebels. To handle bias and perspective well, always try to compare at least two contrasting sources on the same event.
6. Comparing Different Interpretations |
Even modern historians often disagree about the same event – these are called historical interpretations. Some 20th‑century historians saw the Norman Conquest as a positive force that brought efficient government to England; more recent historians emphasise the violence and disruption suffered by ordinary Anglo‑Saxons. Both interpretations use the same evidence but weigh it differently. In your case study, you should mention that there is more than one way to view an event, and you should support your own view with specific evidence.
A helpful exercise is to read two short paragraphs on the fall of the Sui Dynasty: one blaming Emperor Yang’s costly wars and extravagant palaces, the other highlighting deep economic problems and peasant suffering independent of the emperor’s personality. Discuss why historians differ and what each adds to our understanding.
7. Structuring Your Analysis |
A strong case study answer should follow a clear structure. Start with an introduction that sets the scene: which event are you studying, and why is it important? Then provide background context – what was the situation before the event? Next, explain the causes, separating long‑term and short‑term factors. After that, describe the main events in chronological order. Then discuss the consequences, both intended and unintended. Finally, evaluate the sources and interpretations you have used, pointing out any limitations. A conclusion should sum up your view, linking causes to consequences.
You can remember the structure with the acronym C‑B‑C‑E‑S: Context, Body (causes + events), Consequences, Evaluation of sources, Summary. Plan your paragraphs before you start writing.
8. Case Study: The Norman Conquest |
Let us apply these skills to the Norman Conquest. In 1066, King Edward the Confessor died childless, leaving a power vacuum. Three men claimed the English throne: Harold Godwineson, the powerful English earl; William, Duke of Normandy; and Harald Hardrada, King of Norway. Harold was crowned king immediately, but William prepared an invasion fleet, claiming Edward had promised him the crown. Meanwhile, Harald Hardrada invaded northern England. Harold Godwineson rushed north, defeated Hardrada at the Battle of Stamford Bridge on 25 September, then force‑marched his weary army south to face William. The two armies met near Hastings on 14 October. The battle lasted all day; Harold’s housecarls fought bravely, but Norman cavalry and archers eventually broke the shield wall. Harold was killed, and William became king.
Primary sources to examine: the Bayeux Tapestry (Norman view) shows a providential arrow; the ‘Carmen de Hastingae Proelio’ (a Latin poem) celebrates William’s victory; the ‘Anglo‑Saxon Chronicle’ laments the disaster and the heavy taxation that followed. Compare these to assess bias.
Practise writing a short conclusion: ‘The Norman Conquest was caused by both the long‑term problem of a disputed succession and the short‑term ambition of William. Its consequences transformed English society, bringing castles, a new language of power, and a feudal system that lasted for centuries.’
9. Case Study: The Rise of the Tang Dynasty |
China’s Tang Dynasty (618–907 CE) is often remembered as a golden age of culture and trade. Its rise is a superb case study in how internal strife can topple a dynasty and how a skilled leader can seize the moment. The short‑lived Sui Dynasty had fallen into chaos after Emperor Yang launched disastrous campaigns against Korea and demanded huge labour for grand construction. Peasant rebellions broke out, and a general named Li Yuan, stationed in Taiyuan, took the opportunity to march on the capital Chang’an. He seized power in 618 and became Emperor Gaozu of Tang. His son Li Shimin (later Emperor Taizong) consolidated the rule through military victories and wise governance.
Long‑term causes: the Sui Dynasty’s overextension, high taxes, and loss of the ‘Mandate of Heaven’ in the eyes of the people. Short‑term trigger: the failure of the Korean campaigns and immediate rebellions. Consequences: the Tang restored stability, reopened the Silk Road, expanded the empire westward, and introduced the civil service examination system based on merit. Chinese culture, poetry and Buddhist art flourished.
When you examine primary sources, look at the ‘Old Book of Tang’ and the ‘New Book of Tang’ – both official histories written later, but heavily influenced by the victorious Tang’s desire to paint the Sui as evil. A critical eye will notice that the vilification of Emperor Yang might be exaggerated. Also consider archaeological evidence from Silk Road sites showing a mix of cultures, which confirms the peaceful trade mentioned in texts.
10. Practice Questions and Model Answers |
Now put your skills to the test with these practice questions. For each one, try to write a short paragraph in your own words, then check the model answer for hints.
Question 1: Identify and explain two causes of the Norman Conquest. (4 marks)
Model answer: One cause was the death of Edward the Confessor without a direct heir, which created a succession crisis (long‑term cause). Another cause was William of Normandy’s claim that he had been promised the throne, which led him to raise an army and invade in 1066 (short‑term trigger). Both causes are linked because without the crisis, William’s claim would not have seemed urgent.
Question 2: Study the Bayeux Tapestry scene showing the death of Harold. How useful is it as a source about the Norman Conquest? (6 marks)
Model answer: It is useful because it provides a contemporary visual depiction of the battle, showing armour, weapons and tactics. However, it is biased towards the Normans – it was probably commissioned by Bishop Odo, William’s half‑brother – so it presents Harold’s death as a divine punishment. It is also not a complete record; it shows only selected moments and leaves out the suffering of ordinary soldiers.
Question 3: Explain one long‑term consequence of the rise of the Tang Dynasty. (4 marks)
Model answer: A major long‑term consequence was the revival and expansion of the Silk Road trade network. Under the Tang, stable rule and military protection allowed merchants to travel safely between China and Central Asia, exchanging silk, spices and ideas. This commercial prosperity helped make Chang’an one of the world’s largest and most cosmopolitan cities.
Question 4: Why might historians have different interpretations about Emperor Yang of the Sui Dynasty? Use your knowledge of sources to support your answer. (6 marks)
Model answer: Historians might differ because the main written sources – the Tang official histories – were produced by the dynasty that overthrew the Sui and therefore have a strong bias against Emperor Yang. These sources exaggerate his cruelty and bad decisions to justify the Tang takeover. However, some later historians rely on economic evidence, such as grain price records, to argue that the Sui’s collapse was caused more by long‑term financial strain than by the emperor’s personality. Hence, the interpretation changes depending on which evidence is weighted more heavily.
